sang this in a choir a long time ago and the sopranos kept forgetting to come in at the beginning because the oboe is so beautiful - this is what I imagine heaven will sound like :)
Absolutely beautiful. Singing this piece at Leeds Town Hall on Sat. 9th July with our choir, Inspiration. Don't know how I will go on. Everytime I try to sing these words I cry.
I'm currently playing the accompanyment to this piece, but don't listen to a lot of requiems. Can anybody explain why some movements are sung in English, and others in Latin? (I think those are the languages)
latin parts are parts of original cristian mass (kyrie etc) and cannot be left out; some parts are english, and those are psalms, those are not oblicatory parts, i guess he just prefered them in his language
That concert was on April 18, 1999. Two days later, on April 20, 1999, the massacre at Columbine High School happened. I stood there watching the news with the Rutter Requiem going through my head. Later that night, I went into a practice room and bawled like a baby.
I also had the privilege of singing the Rutter Requiem in college, back in 1999. I hated it while we were practicing it, but when the musicians and the community choir came together with us to perform it, I started to like it. The conductor was conducting it in memory of a friend of his who had passed not long before. For me, though, I had nothing emotional on which I could hang the Requiem.
One of my favourite movements from this exquisite requiem mass. I had the privilege of singing it at Derby Cathedral with John Rutter conducting. One of the best days of my life. I get emotional just thinking about it, and I don't even believe in God!
I performed the entire Requiem by Rutter at a Church as a Violinist with a Full Orchestra and Choir on Good Friday 2002, and it was the best Good Friday Service I ever participated in!
Watching this video brings back many wonderful memories! This is my favorite piece from the Requiem and it inspires me every time I play or listen to it!

The oboe solo at the beginning and throughout the movement is completely ethereal. Exquisite.

Viva, Sandnes kulturskolekor ("vivasandnes" on youtube) sing the psalm with the same title, but written by Henry Smart/W:S:Passmore.
Quite different, but equally beautiful...
