I always start with folding over the line, until I have 8 rows, then I take 2 rows and make one line out of them and continue the not-complete 6-rowed line.
It's funny how you guys make it look easy, but you don't show how many times you had to start over from scratch because it it MASSIVELY difficult to do this.
I was given Bucky Balls as a graduation present and I absolutely love them! Thank-you Zoomdoggle for showing me how to get it back to the cube. It was tough trying to figure it out for myself.
These are the ultimate time waster! I've stayed up for hours playing with them :]

First time I did this, it took me about 4 hours. But my god, I learned a lot about twisting rows so that they tile in a grid, rather than in a hex pattern.
It's as fun to fail with these things as it is to find the optimal path.
