@thomasbliss yeah steve jordan is a better "groover" for sure... also brian blade would be great... coz i think that ballard isn't a funky drummer :) but he's got ideas!
Yes gospel music has had a strong connection with jazz, but lets not make it a racial thing. If you have a gospel background, yes your infleunces might be a little different. I mean,,.. Arturo was from cuba.. i'm sure his latin chops are way stronger then most trumpet players. It doesn't matter what you look like, it's what you grew up on and around.
tell that to benny goodman, and brad meldau, and jo zawinal, and bing crosby, and frank sinatra, and jackie mclean, and buddy rich - oh - and the HALF WHITE joshua redman.
They all have\had mega chops for everything, much more then any one, black or white, has today.
And what about bach? he had the most soul any one had in the past 300 years.
You just said the most idiotic thing ever.
Your even not king tard, your to shitty to be even that, you just a big floating tard with corn.
notice how i said gospel chops. I'm not trying to be racist at all. I was mostly talking about the drummer who does a killing job. these guys are doing a great jjob but you more commonly see african american musicians in this genre then white. that was my point, it's good to see these guys sporting there shit. stop trying to blow things out of proportion.
the this is, most players arent black in this buisness, even among the good players, since it past like 50 years from that era, i suppose u understand why.
Blade played exclusively on the first cd. "Momentum", the second cd, has Ballard and Blade playing on it. They both played 6 songs each on the cd. ?uestlove from The Roots even played on one song.

I think that Joshua Redman is defiantly one of the best or the best sax players of his generation and should be given a medal. This is one of the best times ive heard him.
I`ve sat and had some beers with Ballard in a bar after a concert, I remember he talked about the importance of breathing naturally while playing, and thinking in terms of fundament and ornament in terms of drumming (or something similar, we had a couple of beers lol)
Not really digging the shit with the octave displacer at the end where he's clicking the keys and shit. It sounds pretty weak and kind of kills the groove.
If Redman were somehow able to lose all electronic instruments on that stage and replace them with a bass, and a set of drums, it would sound better (to me). Too many useless unmelodic notes. Redman is still the best though.
yea man ballards broken time right before the harmonics is sicknasty and is also perfectly in tempo, saw him with metheny mehldau recently, friggin unbelievable
20 seconds of no time? I don't hear it. There's a pocket the whole way through. They stretch out the rythms and build some rythmic tension at one point, but you could run a metronome straight through it and they're dead on. That's why these guys are great.
If you play the same all the time it gets boring for the player. He needs to keep it interesting for himself too. I dont know how exactly it was below par, but, hey, whatever. I thought it was great. So, cool....opinions....everyones got 'em, and, well, you know the rest. haha.
I agree with you! at the end of the day even if you are so good as JR is, you would resort to your own licks... and opinions are just that - opinions. I cannot relate to so much debate (that gets too personal) over who´s best, etc. r u a musician?
So because it's not a bunch of kids with hair over their eyes screaming and thrashing at guitars or a bunch of middle aged men with hair down to their feat and make-up covering them muttering under their voices through a microphone and some drummer going "DUGGADUGGADUGGADUGGADUGGADUGGADUGGADUGGA" all the time it's not good?
its a slap tongue, he just doesnt put much air through it so it sounds like a bass. its not TOO hard, but perfecting it is another thing, and he does it like no one else
Every year since I first heard this song, I just HAVE to play it on my birthday. . .I love it <3

should be:
quarter note //32notepause 2 *32" bdrum 1*32"snare 1*8" snare //16" triplet pause
16" triplet snare 16"triplet pause16" (straight) pause16"snare//
2*32 tom 1*16 tom 1*16 floor tom//
crash on the one in the next bar
//indicates end of every quarter note in the 4/4 bar
