No other singer performed this role like Caballe did. Her ethereal pianissimi and prodigious breath control helped to set her apart. I never tire of listening to her.

Exquisite. This whole 1978 Nice production is

magnificent in every detail. I'm SO FRUSTRATED that the only DVD Caballe Carreras performance available (although THEY are wonderful) is the Japanese production.I have it, but it pales next to this production. Caballe is so much better in this aria and their final love duet - better costumes, more delicacy of pianissimos, better sound, better stage direction - like Carreras kneeling as he proposes in the last scene. If anyone has THIS on DVD-answer.

It seems to me that when she sings this aria, it rings with truth. It reflects what she believes about herself. Wonderful!

Both Freni's recital version and the Met gala are better than this interpretation. Freni wipes the floor with Caballe...end of story.

Caballe's voice is on and off with me. Sometimes I absolutely melt, while other times I cringe at obvious technical flaws. Callas was that way too. But Caballe has amazing subito pianos and floats.

exactly! Compared to the technical atrocities all the rest of the singers did Callas and Caballe were flawless before them! It's just my friend that no-one ever bothered to described the count-less technical mistakes of other great singers, thus in the common mind they appear as "flawless".
