SHE ASSES--:) I thinks its cool that Job is in the Bible. Some think that God wont stand for any questioning of Him. But, Job ended up questioning God's goodness.God sort of set job straight at the end......
....but I think of God putting Job straight in a comforting way--not sarcastic and angry--like some people think. This makes me think of a verse that says something like...
SC: I was wondering what you think about the two animals mentioned late in the book, beheamoth and leviathan. They're widely regarded as what you and I would call dinosaurs, a position with which I agree. What do you think?
I thought the common concensus was that the dinosaurs were killed in the flood?Well, anyways, there were definately no dinosaurs in the time of man.Unless you count birds.Maybe a mastadon and a giant squid?
coolintruddle: I think maybe the line which most suggests dinosaur is the description of behemoth's tail "swaying like a cedar." There's no modern animal that has a tail which could be described as akin to a tree, whereas such tails were common amongst dinosaurs.
Ya,um,that passage is open to a huge amount of interpretation.I'm from cedar country.Mountains covered in them. The sway rather easily in a nice breeze.Kind of like an elephants tail while swatting flies. All I'm saying is there were no dinosaurs 3-4 thousand years ago.
I think that when taken along with the rest of the description of Behemoth it's clearly talking about a very large tail. Regarding when dinosaurs did nor did not exist, one has to admit that the abundance of dinosaur-like images in ancient art and literature is at the very least interesting. It doesn't prove anything, but honest exploration begins with recognizing that there might be something to learn.
What you're proposing is akin to Erich von Däniken's Chariots of the Gods. There is absolutely no way you can take something drawn 10-12 thousand years ago and put our modern mindset to it.When dinosaurs were around, mammals were little rodent like things. The earliest writings we have pre date the OT by around 2000 years.I would think they would talk about giant man eating (or crop eating) animals. The evidence is just not there.
coolintruddle: You say, "There is absolutely no way you can take something drawn 10-12 thousand years ago and put our modern mindset to it." But do you notice that we do not impose that limitation on ourselves with regard to any other field of ancient study? There is a tremendous effort underway to dismiss even the possibility of human/dinosaur co-existance, and I believe it is intellectually dishonest. Not you, of courrse. I'm speaking in general.
What other ancient studies do you mean? It's not an effort to dismiss the possibility. There is no evidence to support the possibility.Look,we're not talking about 50,000 years ago here. We're talking about 3500years at the most.We had writing then. Some one would have written about them is all I'm saying.
Ah, there's the point. What if they have been written about all along, but only dismissed in modern times in order to protect scientific orthodoxy? I say this because historic literature is replete with references to such creatures. Even Marco Polo, Herodotus and Alexander the Great wrote about seeing them. They didn't use the word "dinosaur" of course because it hadn't yet been coined, but the references are clear. Have you ever read-up on this subject , just out of curiosity? It's interesting.
I'm well versed in Alexandrian literature. But you make my point.Herodotus describes small winged lizards living in frankincense trees.I have no problem with that. There are many lizards that can glide between trees.you're putting spin on what he says.Marco Polo though?I'm not as well read on that one.Wasn't he in the 13th century? You can't say there were dinosaurs in the 13th century.
Here's a quote from Polo's writings, detailing a creature he encountered in Asia: "Here are found snakes and huge serpents, ten paces in length and ten spans in girth [50 feet long; 100 inches in girth]. At the fore part, near the head, they have two short legs, each with three claws, as well as eyes larger than a loaf and very glaring. The jaws are wide enough to swallow a man, the teeth are large and sharp, and their appearance is so formidable that neither man nor animal can approach them."
Hey, commander. Good video. Job is a humbling book for sure. I think it's best summed-up by the question "Can A Mere Man Be A True Judge Of God's
Activity?" God's answer is "no." What's so interesting though, and heartening, is that God later humbled himself to take on our form in Christ and suffer tremendously on our behalf. It's a fallen world. We ask "why?" about everything, and God says "trust me." And I do.
LordOmberus - After his uncivil behaviour I had to look at his channel, and I note that he has a habit of deleting comments on his videos when people disagree with him. Why am I not surprised? A YEC who won't take dissent on his own channel stomps his poor little feet when he encounters it on another! I agree let's ignore him.
GoodGuy4life199 - that's rich, you told me that I'm 'in the gutter', in 'atheistic madness' with a little 'demon' inside me, and now you tell SoftwareEngineer3 he dwells in 'ignorance' and is a 'tortured soul' with 'childish insults' and call him a 'satanic spirit'? So, no ad hominems or insults there then! So far people have been politely trying to correct your errors and contradict some of your baseless assertions but you're behaving like a typical boorish YEC who gives Christians a bad name.
@GoodGuy: Genesis talks about a snake, not Satan. The snake's punishment does not fit in with your view. Genesis "explains" why snakes are hated, and why they don't have legs. The Satan has his legs intact, no?
You bringing up the census and the "6305 years" claim make me have to call Poe's law on you.
Still following your reading, friend. Have not had a lot of time to comment as much, but I'm still with ya. Since I can't show support by rating, I just wanted you to know.
Job should've cursed God. That death and destruction served no purpose. Satan comes up to God and practically asks for permission to do evil and God challenges him, "go ahead, do your worst".
GoodGuy4life199, clearly you haven't been following the series, or read the book. This is the first time The Satan is mentioned as a cause of pain. Even here it is only by God's permission and rules.
In Hebrew it says THE Satan, since in Judaism there is no opposing force to God. It's more like being Satan is a role, played by different angles, and appointed by God. It's not a name. You can't really say just "Satan". Consequently, he's not an important character in the OT.
Also, it says "bless God" instead of "curse God"... I guess in the translation they weren't so strict about blasphemy.
And in the end, his kids stay dead (he gets newer models).
GoodGuy4life199 - By the way, I didn't make any claim, that was you with 'God doesn't cause pain to anyone', I merely pointed out your error. Now you put your blinkered bigotry on display, how very 'Christian' of you. I watch videos by people with all kinds of beliefs, I'm not looking to become a Scientologist, Muslim or anything else, it merely shows my interest and openness to the experience of others. I like SC's honest approach so watch despite his being a Christian, live with it.
I don't think he gets 'upset with god'; Job appears to consistently blame himself for his misfortunes, although he does recognise god as the source of his problems and says so quite strongly, e.g. Job 6:4 'The arrows of the Almighty are in me, my spirit drinks in their poison; God's terrors are marshaled against me'. I suppose it may hinge on your definition of 'upset with god'.
SC another interesting video. You'd be surprised how many Christians share your misunderstanding about the JOB story. However, it does highlight the moral question surrounding the relative guilt of those who commission, abet or even stand idly by while a crime is committed.
GoodGuy4life199 - 'That was DIFFERENT', it always is. Your assertion that 'God doesn't cause pain to anyone' is clearly disproven with your own bible. Live with it. The rest of your comment(s) were random noise and didn't address the issue under discussion.
GoodGuy4life199 - 'God doesn't cause pain to anyone.', really? So all the times in the bible where God smote people it was totally pain free, wow, I never knew that!
This is my favorite book !
