  • I just got 3 of the new ones. They're awesome! I have a v2 and a v1 also. I love these things. My buddy uses 3 of them on his acoustic kit with his band. People were raving about them after his show last weekend. When you get the settings dialed in for your style they kick ass.

  • Where can I buy this?!

  • @ cellardoor199991

Danny uses Mandalas extensively live and in the studio. He worked closely in designing with Synesthesia Corporation over a four year period while Mandala membrane trigger technology was honed to super-fast response times.

  • Danny just uses it. It's not like he designd it, right?

  • @cellardoor199991 No he didnt, its called endorsement, this thing sucks anyways, its good for making trippy non musical noises and for kids seem to like its simplicity, i personally will save half of a thousand dollars for this toy.... and not bother

  • Does it have to be connected to USB when playing?

  • looks expensive

  • Nice rug

  • i have tog get one of these one day... they are so cool

  • ....Danny is my God .... but wtf, random notes with this Mandala? ...

  • @KillerDrummer88 they have tracking problems, you dont notice because Danny uses a full drum set a uses these for like 3 seconds of a few songs...

  • @Taud Look at the overhead pic of Danny's kit on the DrummerWorld website. He has 7 Mandalas all over the place. He has more Mandalas than acoustic drums in his kit! And he sure uses them for more than 3 seconds at a time. He talks about helping develop them in his Modern Drummer cover story and he posts news about them on his own website and on the Tool website. Why would Danny lie about that? Why are you such a trash talker?

  • @metopia69 First of all it wasnt @ you

second of all, why do you suck his dick so much?

they do have tracking problems we had one in our studio, some of us try to buy products for functionality, not because we have huge fan boners for someone and refuse to admit a product has its limitations, dont like it?

cry to them about the product, not me i dont give a shit lol

  • I want one.

  • That sounds really cool. How do you tune such a drum?

  • @paulwall1981 you don't, it's triggered to play different sounds if you hit it in different places

  • the first song reminds me of SPORE

    i like thoes songs =w=

  • I've got a question:

When I watch those videos it always seems to me that the drum is hit by one stick after another, but it seems as if no one ever hits its surface with both sticks at the same time. So please, can anyone tell me whether it is possible to hit two different zones at the same time and actually have both sounds playing? Or is it even possible to have up to seven zones being hit and giving a sound simultaneously? How many are possible?

  • I like The rug

  • this is the sort of thing that would be fun for a day and then end up in the attic collecting dust with all the other pointless gadgets!

  • nice "planets of the universe" rug to go with the very psychedelic mood.

  • let me guess... $569.50 dollars at guitarcenter in a christmas sale! lol...

  • So this is like the percussion used in the pink floyd song one slip in the beginning.

  • How do you control what sound comes out? Is it just a trigger connected to a drum module? If you're going to bite my head off, save it. Just looking for some info about these.

  • The v1.0 in this video connected to a Mandala Brain module that had sounds in it that you would assign to different zones on the pad. The v2.0 connects to a computer instead and controls any drum software, including their Virtual Brain app.

  • @metopia69 `virtual brain'? Are you saying I can attach this to Dick Cheney and get him to make sense?

  • The drum surface has many "areas" that you can program different keys to. So essentially you could have an entire drumset worth of sounds on 1 pad.

  • It depends on where abouts you hit it, and how hard you hit it

  • May I just interject with: who gives a fuck?

    1. Without proof, you cannot expect anyone to believe anything you say. Don't say "look it up," actually provide links to what you're referring to.

    2. Who cares "how big of a fan" someone else is? I got into Tool after 10,000 Days came out, but that doesn't make me any less of a fan than people I know who were into them when they only had Opiate.

  • you guys are all fags

  • you're all retarded. the mandala is a midi controller. trigger whatever you want with it. if you suck you'll trigger software presets or hardware that makes you sound good no matter what you do. if you're talented you'll trigger stuff like any other pro drummer that uses electronic triggers to express themselves, just like all the mandala endorsees. shut your idiot mouth unless you have at least the slightest knowledge of what you are talking about.

  • @buddyboy2007 YEAH!! MOFO!!

    PREACH ON PLAYA PREACH ON!

    (dumb ass)

  • so then your saying your retarded?

  • I have played drums for 14 yrs. i model danny carey's techniques as well as his mentors. I own alot of music equip specifically i have 3 elec sets. it is not hard to manipulate the drum. as long as you have good rudiments and can stay in time using this is not hard. it can make a retard sound gifted. no offense.

  • I agree thats exactly whats its for, its a toy for retards to sound good, because its impossible to sound bad its all signal processed... I mean, isn't the pads on electric kits just as good if you use some software like this crap does, plus the people who bought the first model of this drum got ripped off because they produced an updated blue model, still a rip off none the less

  • Does anyone know why this version has been discontinued?

  • how do you use this thing, how do you control it? i dunno very much about this things

  • google it. go to the company's [synesthesia corp] website. i'm writing this purely for others who post a question like that, because i assume after a week you'd realize this is the internet and have done these things already.

  • As much as I've read the pads are position and pressure sensitive, so depending on where you hit them and how hard you get different sounds.

  • thats so cool

  • These are cheap now compared to what they used to be. $350 for one pad + equipment, and $929 for a cool three-pack.

  • onlly problem is u can onlly play fast if you play really fast it loses and not picking up som hits besides that is not bad to experiment but id recoment a for sound experiments and back round effects

  • no way dude. you must have some screwed up PC or something that can't handle the flow of information when you play fast cuz this thing gets every single hit. i doubt danny carey and matt chamberlain would be so into it if it missed even a single hit!

  • Well man part of the reason those to are "so into it" is endorsements and sponsorship, they play their equip and it gives them popularity so they get the equip for free. so you see someone like you whos aware of those names is more like to trust the product, Danny also uses a few other midi pads not just this one, he also only uses them for little intros and outros and weird ambient effects, its not dominant in a song

  • Mandalas are dominant in many TOOL songs, like Jambi and Right in Two. Danny uses 7 of them. They dominate his kit. There are more Mandalas than acoustic drums in his kit. Also, he helped develop them, so he didn't get anything for free.

  • @buddyboy2007 funny... if you look up a video on here of him doing lateralus in full he doesnt use the mandala, right in two is mostly just weird noises so id believe it, ive also seen the majority of the concert videos... there was NOT 7 mandalas... one or two at the most.. im a tool fan myself

  • @ Taud... I know the band personally...for years, and I've been on tour with them. Danny has 7 Mandalas in his kit at all times. The picture you see when you go to Wikipedia for Mandala Drums is Danny's kit exactly the way it is for every concert. The Mandalas are essential, just as Danny's Simmons pads used to be before there were Mandalas.

  • now THAT is a far fetched story my friend, you have nothing posted to prove it, ive talked to shit loads of people who claimed to be the roadies of successful bands youll forgive me if i shrug you off as a bullshit fan who takes things to far trying to talk for the band themselves, i dont care to argue about tool, the product itself is what i dislike here....

  • Ha. You are a joke, and you know absolutely nothing about TOOL or anyone who works with them. They love idiots like you spending money on them. Anyway, a fact is a fact. Danny's got 7 Mandalas at all times. If you weren't just some podunk fan from the middle of nowhere you'd know that. Go ahead and email the Mandala guys. They'll tell you straight up.

  • @imacellphone Fuck yes! thats the grudge.

  • @MichaelGrah i can't believe you got that! :P

  • This things kinda cool but the novelty wears off quickly, plus the guys that produce it are fucking assholes, when i asked why mine wasnt shipped on time yet they told me i was threatening them and the USA doesnt deal with threats..... fuckin corporate america at its best.....

  • well it really isn't a necessary part of kit, but if your playing songs with a band, or recording, its useful.

  • desperate to control all and everything unable to forgive this

  • So this is just a midi trigger?

  • I so want one.

  • WEAR THE GRUDGE LIKE A CROWN

  • negativity, calculate what you will

  • or will not tolerate....

  • Saturn Ascends...

  • ...choose one or ten...

  • im born again.

  • I want one so bad!!

  • I've got one that I rarely use. It's one of the version 1.0's with the portable brain. I'm thinking about selling it at a pretty discounted price. It's in phenomenal condition. If you want to make an offer I'd be interested in hearing it!

  • where did you get it? tell me, TELL ME!!!!!

  • wow spectacular

  • so how exactly does it work and how do you know where to strike it?

  • Im pretty sure you hook it up to a computer. I know that you have control over what sounds it makes where. The sounds in the video arent the only ones that you canuse

  • same way you know where to strike an acoustic drum to get the sound you want!

  • i like your carpet

  • How much does that cost?

  • and there's another version available for $350 too.

  • they run ya about $1000

  • Man you could trip so many people out at a gig with this baby! I need one of these!

  • thats the coolest fucking sound ever, how much did that thing run you, or does anyone know how much thoe things cost

  • I must have one...where can I get one? ...and how much does that bad boy cost?

  • Awesome pad. pretty sweet what you can do with it.

  • SWEEET!!!!

  • That is some tight stuff...

  • critiic for absolutly NOTHING

  • This thing is an instrument in and of itself

  • TOOL ROCKS!

  • id totally buy it if it wasnt 1000 bucks lol

  • There is a $350 USB version, that is even better.

  • where?

  • nice....I gotta get one...that thing is sweet....thanks for the post ...never heard of this product....

  • Check RHYTHMTANDEM for another great invention.

  • Read the info:

A demo of the Synesthesia Mandala Drum Pad that Danny Carey of TOOL uses to trigger sounds during his performance.

(not Danny Carey playing, just a demo)

I found this on the net and it wasn't on youtube yet, so here ya go!

  • umm read the title it says Danny Carey of tool not "used by" danny carey of tool

  • Read the info... Gheeshh...

not Danny Carey playing, just a demo

This ain't Danny. Is just a guy using the same gear Danny does...

Why do you guys never read the video info?

  • ignorant dick

  • IN THE TITLE -Mandala Drum Pad -

Danny Carey of Tool-That implies that this video clip is of DANNY CAREY playing the drum pad-How am "I " ignorant??

I'm sure most of the people that clicked on this post NEVER would if they too knew it wasn't really him.

    -

why else would this post get 143,756 hit's??

  • (not Danny Carey playing, just a demo), does that mean anything you, or is it just going right through your head, maybe it got that many hits because people wanna see the Mandala pad

  • 0:45 reminds me of willy wonka

  • HAHAHA, me too!

  • ngt55ps is a total douche bag imo please thumbs down his comment.thank you.lol gtfo if u dont like it bitch u proly cant even do a simple drum beat.honestly it looks easy but to get al the right sounds its pretty dang hard

  • Maybe someone took a shit in your ears when you weren't looking?

You might want to get that checked out before it gets infected.........

  • I use the same drumsticks he has in this video. Promark jazz sticks, if you a drummer get those.

  • i would give a blowjob for that

  • gay and i prolly wouldnt. but i guess its worth. i wud totally do it if i was gay

  • i would kill and eat your family for that beautiful instrument.

  • haha nice. Im loving the picture of SATURN subtly placed behind the mandala

  • So do like, different patterns result in different sounds? Or is the pad set up to when you hit it in a different spot, you get a different sound?

  • it looks like different spots trigger different sounds

  • WICKED

  • next time my missus buys a new dress iam buyin one of them thats unreal

  • I reckon start of 'Eulogy' has some of this action

  • and also stinkfist. the beginning part is played with this i think

  • ya i have the sounds made on my mandala pad v2.0.its already out on there which is cool

  • nah maynard does some wierd guitar looking thing for eulogy start but stinkfist hasthis action.i have one and played stinkfist on it.its sounds great.get the 350 buck one its pretty cool and cheap

  • do u need it hooked up to the computer to hear tyhe actual sound?or only to make the sounds?i mneed to be knowing cuz i wanna get one when christmas comes.message me witht he details please

  • the v2.0 hooks to a computer through usb and all the sounds come from the computer. i think that one is 299 and then there is the v1.0 that has its own brain and that one is 999.

  • Just prove that danny is the awesomest drummer EVER.

  • amen to that

  • In 1977, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) created the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Reference Model. The reference model serves as a functional guideline for dividing up communication tasks.

  • so psychedelic !!! :o

  • waw... its really cool

  • Haha thats amazing

  • Hehe, I think 0:45 part was pretty recognisable from a certain Tool song... Cool instrument, too bad I gave up drumming :P

  • yeah im pretty definate thats what he used in merkaba a tripd out song played live on there salival disc set

  • yeah im pretty definate that part at 0.45 thats what he used in merkaba a tripd out song played live on there salival disc set

  • i think Danny Carey used the pad in the song "stinkfist"

  • awsome playing! sund fits with your flour. lol!

  • wtf about your ground???

  • those are fuckin sick, i has to get those!

  • I think its different samples, in different section of the drum...

  • Where can you get one of these??

  • Is it different samples based on how hard you hit it?

  • you can choose diferent percusive sounds, but this demonstration shows mainly the good resolution between the volume (gain of hit) and how hard you hit it. Also it shows the great resolution of the hit area between the sound frequency and the point you hit. In few words, its and electronic drum that can be used as it was an acoustic one, because of the great resolution in volume and range of frequencies

  • danny carey is massive, im pretty sure his wrists could withstand it

  • Oh yeah, I've seen him live. I know HE could. This tool can't though

  • meh

  • heyy its only 1,000 dollars lol

    but i want one

  • its only about $350 list price so your in luck

  • i want one!

most likely costs about 3 grand

  • That is so cool lol :D

  • Drummers are the most talented musicians.

    Danny Carey. Point Proven.

  • agreed.. guitar players bass players, they can move their fingers fast.. and we move our entire body, and then they ask why were tired at practice.

  • Enough with the drummer jokes.. none of them are true and they're not even funny. Even if I wasn't a drummer, they're still not funny. They're childish jokes for childish people so for you people that tell drummer jokes... you're childish.. Grow up.

  • Just pull the stick out of your ass and grow a sense of humor. If you're so insecure as to be offended by people that tell drummer jokes, maybe you shouldn't be doing music? ...just a thought.

  • Drummers are nothing but cavemen with OCD.

  • drummers? arent those the people that hang out with musicians?

  • I love drummer jokes. Haha. They're great. I'm a drummer, though and I don't experience any of that. The only times I see that stuff is when one of my bandmates sits down behind the drums and they get a 'wtf' look on their face and freeze up.

  • Did you hear about the drummer who finished high school? Me neither.

What has three legs and an asshole? A drum stool.

  • What has no life and is found dead with a heroin in his basement apt.?

    the guitarist

  • Good thing I'm not a guitarist!

How do you tell if the stage is level? The drummer is drooling from both sides of his mouth.

What's the last thing a drummer says in a band? "Hey guys, why don't we try one of my songs?"

What do you call a drummer that breaks up with his girlfriend? Homeless.

What do Ginger Baker and black coffee have in common? They both suck without Cream.

What do you call a drummer with half a brain? Gifted.

  • and since you're not a guitarist, why don't you tell me what instrument you play? or are you just a talentless, skill-less jealous whiny bitch?

  • There's no way to be jealous of something that can easily be replaced by a machine, sir. I'm a synthesist/programmer. My music is infinite and isn't hindered by human limits. Drums on the other hand are dull and lifeless.

  • What's the best way to confuse a drummer? Put a sheet of music in front of him.

So, a drummer decides he's finally going to learn how to play a real instrument. He goes to his nearest music store, walks in, and spends many hours browsing for the perfect instrument. Just before the store is about to close, he asks the sales clerk for the red trumpet and the accordion sitting on the floor. The clerk looks at him and says "Sir, you can have the fire extinguisher, but the radiator has to stay."

  • it's funny how other types of musicians feel the need to try and insult drummers.. shows a lot of insecurity and jealousy on their part. when practicing guitar I improve about 10 times faster than when i practice drums. excellent drummers truly are the most talented musicians and mastering drums easily takes the most skill. excellent guitarists are a dime a dozen, and guitar is boring as fuck to listen to. that's why im devoted to the drums rather than the easier instruments like guitar.

  • Heh. Guitar is pretty damn boring. I insult drummers though because they're so easily replaceable. Drums have a max polyphony of four simultaneous sounds. ...my sampler on the other hand has a polyphony of 128 sounds, therefore making for percussion that is a hell of a lot more interesting.

  • Nothin beats a real drummer.. IF you know anything about the music business you would know you really can't have a band without a drummer.

    Importance to the band:

    1. Drummer- to keep time and give the song some complexity.

    2. Vocals- to give the song a meaning.

    3. Guitar- to give the song some more musical complexity and to go with the vocals.

    4. Bass- to kinda back up the drummer in adding more sound to the song.

  • But there is nothing a drummer can do that a machine can't do better. Bands function better when there's less operative members. Simplifies the creative process. If you really knew anything about the music rather than the business, you would have already understood this by now.

  • not true at all... you play synthesizer also known as a keyboard. Bands don't function better with less operative members. My band prooves my point. We all work together just fine. And just out of curiousity.. You've been doing this for how long?

  • Synthesizers don't necessarily have keyboards, retard. They can be programmed to be played via computers, analog step sequencers, or any other number of programming methods. A keyboard again, is a human limitation, limited to ten notes simultaneously. My band is an example of how less members make for a better band. We had five, we busted it down to two, now we're a well-oiled machine and gigs are shows are much easier. You've been narrow-minded in your concept of music for how long?

  • Then technically you're not a musician at all. A musicians actually plays his/her instrument and enjoys what they do. We take pride in what we do and we respect each other even though we may be limited to how long we can go, but that is part of human life. That's part of what humans do. And I wasn't getting upset about it I'm just saying the jokes are pointless. And why are you calling me an inferior.

  • A musician is one who makes music. Just because my tools aren't as limited and boring as yours does not make me less of a musician. I create, I express emotion, and most importantly, I'm not a whiny ass bitch about it, which is what makes you inferior. A machine is as much an instrument as anything else whether you are able to comprehend this or not.

  • Ok look... let's just stop arguing ok?.. I'm sick and tired of this crap. You're a musician and so am I. There, done, over,... ok?

  • Then lighten the fuck up and take a simple fucking joke or three hundred, ok?

What does a drummer use for contraception? His personality.

How do you get a drummer to play quieter? Put a chart in front of him

Why do guitarists put drumsticks on the dash of their car? So they can park in the handicapped spot.

How is a drum solo like a sneeze? You can tell it's coming, but you can't do anything about it.

  • why do u suck my balls?

u just do, dont ask any questions...

  • Musicians are supposed to respect one another which apparently you have no respect for drummers, or anyone else. I really don't want to argue, I'm just simply sayin show some respect for other musicians.

  • All I did was make some simple jokes. You're the one who took it personally, went emo and got all butt-hurt about it. I have no respect for somebody who can't deal with his own inferiority.

  • DivineChemical, you are truely retarded if you think that a drum machine can do anything that a real drummer can. Check out the fill in lamb of god's "ruin"

Can a drum machine do that?

  • Yes, sir, it can! You're retarded to think that a machine can't do that? Anything is possible and then some with clever programming.

  • ahhhahahaha keyboard? electronic sounds? you could teach a chimp to do what you do on keyboard, producing artificial-sounding, boring trash. keyboard and piano is the easiest instrument of them all. you have everything laid out smack dab in front of you, and pianists and keyboardists can get away with using shitty technique and it takes very little practice. i respect guitarists and even bassists more than the "keyboard player."

  • that's so hilarious you think you're the shit for playing.. keyboard! hahahaha. and you think "a machine" sounds just as good as when humans play the drums? that says it all. you're a moron, and you're not a musician.

  • I'm glad to have made you laugh, now I'm really going to make you laugh: walk into a commercial studio sometime. Over half of them these days are using Drumagog to replace the drum tracks with drum samples. This translates to 50% of the music you listen to having used a sampler on the drum tracks whether you want to admit that or not. Now, laugh it up while you can. I'm laughing because cocky little shits like you are being replaced!

  • and btw, you sound like napolean dynamite in the your "pig fucker" video. (that's not a good thing). the rest of the noise that is attached to the video is garbage.

  • I never saw Napoleon Dynamite. I know the pop-culture references to the whole 'Gosh' thing, but does he have a scratchy voice or something?

  • oh, and you're little video of your "music" sounds like shit. it sure does sound like machines playing a bunch of mechanical monotonous shit that no one would listen to, except maybe yourself. but have fun with that lol.

  • If nobody listens to it, then why in the fuck do I have so many people buying my album? Quit your bitching and own up: where's your mark of success if your music is so much better than mine, or are you still living in your mommy's basement playing drums with your kindergarten friend's Play School Drum set?

  • haha you're pathetic. im literally laughing right now. at you. mister "i play the keyboard! the keyboard can replace all instruments, and machines sound better than people!" hahahaha electronic machines have no soul, dumbass. how can you listen to the shit you produce with your keyboard? it's only music because ANY sounds count as music. industrial metal is only called music because any sounds constitute music.

  • i actually agree though, you can
