  • There is a good way to race and a bad one, Colley2k7 you may work with and awsome trainer BUT there still are very cruel trainers out there, my friend worked for a Therobreed racer as a jockey and groom, when one of the horses wasnt feeing good one day when she went out to train him, she saw his feet were swelled, she told her trainer, but he made her exersise him anyway, a while later, the horse colapsed and my friend was in the hospital with a broken collar bone, the horse, died,&she was fired

  • Only thing i hate about it, is no one thinks about what happens to the horses after they have been hurt are to slow, or are retired. most of the horses where i live go to the doggers, thats where i found my ex racer Sarcorpa and alot of my other ex racers and riding ponies.

  • IMO Today the seem to be breeding for speed, not stamina or endurance.

I know they have banned certain steroids and some are careful on what races they choose for the horses. You have some that care about the welfare of the horse and then some that try to make money.

  • omg the anouncement of the race u have at the end was a race my (ex) race horse ran in. i have the video of it. i thought it sounded familor. thankfully i gave my baby a second chance. <3

  • im sorry but u dont know a fucking thing! i work in racing and horses are treated like royalty! if my trainer had a choice between me falling off and braking my neck than the horse braking its leg believe me u would not want to be me in that situation! make a video when u actually know what happens in racing u complete fucking nob!

  • Thanks for the work you're doing.

  • Most of the workers and trainers involved in thoroughbred horse racing are more protective of the animals they are in contact with everyday and do more for the good of the horses than the misinformed people on the outside.

  • You are right crockjock! When we are able to say All workers and trainers do right by their horses, while they're racing and when they're ready for retirement, CANTER won't be needed any more. That will be a fantastic day!

  • The mare looked like she could have been helped with proper care, why was she euthanized?

And why was Belle D`Elite euthanized? She looks ok as well except what appears to be some inflamation in one of her legs, but she`s standing fine and her ears are pricked.

I`d appreciat knowledge on exactly why they were euthanized.

  • @Beatlegirl4eva Yes I find that interesting too. That mare could have been helped. So called welfare organisations!!

  • I`m always sceptical of welfare organizations. All of them seem to have downfalls, some severe (PETA) and some minor (USERL) and everything in between.

I`ve seen worse hooves than that, to the point of spiraling, litterally, the hooves curved into spirals, and with proper care the horses were fine (it was a small rescue of about 8 or so horses and donkeys, several had uncared for hooves and most were saved, the ones euthanized had internal things wrong, as to were it was more humane to euthaniz

  • Beatlegirl and Debacle - Assessing the mare's feet and the untreated injuries suffered by Belle D'Elite based on photos isn't very realistic. If you really cared about and wanted to know about these horses, why wouldn't you call CANTER and ask? CANTER-MI isn't the "bad guy" here - the owners/trainers who couldn't be bothered to care for the mare and who weren't willing to pay a vet to treat Belle D'Elite's injuries are the ones you should be disappointed with.

  • I`ve seen a lot of horse hooves in great and horrible shape. Also, most hoof problems can be fixed with care, except for laminitis of course, which can be cured but it`s hard.

Her hooves really don`t look all that bad except for her fetlock area which is bent wrong but not catastrophically.

I was only wondering why Belle D`elite was euthanized, I never said it was wrongfully so, it could have been internal.

I don`t do phones, I have trouble with them and try to use them as little as possible.

  • your an idiot

  • very true! I'm glad u put this on :D I am buying a former racer :)

  • look who;s talkin

  • very good cause ,I seen your canter do a wonderful thing at the del rob dispersal by outbidding the horse slaughter agents, as well as racetrack saviors, there are definately a few bad apples , i also have been around the industry first hand for some time and I've seen the utmost care and wellbeing of many outfits, I agree a strong arm needs to be put forth to deal with these few that surface at lower level tracks usually with selfish intentions.

  • I'm confused then. Why did you put the video up? And yes, I do know that it's not all bad but...

  • The sport would be cool if they treated the horses better...

  • Most treat their horses great! There's only a few bad apples and Larry Jones isn't one of them. He adores his horses. Unless you know for certain you shouldn't make remarks like that.

My issues are with the non existent "ruling body" of the sport to regulate the rules across the country.

  • no I didn't mean the riders I meant the whole thing. Like that they have the horses being trained as yearlings.

  • I wasn't saying the riders either. I'm talking about the trainers. Most horses do not begin training until they have had x-rays done to their legs to see if their bones are ready.

There's much done to protect the horses and the majority of the horsemen take good care of their animals. I will not dispute that there are bad ones out there. I want those guys/gals to be dealt with properly. Thus the need for a ruling body.

  • Don't human athletes get started in their sport and physical conditioning in their pre or early teen years? Way before they've reached physical maturity, while they are still young and can develop strength to grow into great adult athletes. Since a horse's avg lifespan is 25 yrs, and a human's is 80 aprox, its almost the same...kids learn basics at age 6, many play their chosen sport by age 9, and the good ones are getting serious at age 11, which would translate into ages 2, 3, and 4 for TBs

  • ok... i don't know whats next! It's just what everyone says and I'm an animal right frantic. Sorry I posted it...

  • true 'dat!! it is retarded the way they have state-by-state rules and not a nation-wide, uniform code of conduct/ethics. Remember the Lasix debacle in the early '90s? New york banned its use while ky and maryland allowed it. That discrepancy threatened to bring an end to the Triple Crown as we knew it. Now steroid legislation (and inconsistent laws state-to-state) is proving to be a similar stumbling block for the industry. (and off topic-I wish they would regulate toe-grabs also)

  • Just about the leg x-ray comments, the horses legs are actually the least important part of growth. The spine only finishes maturing when a horse is 5. I love horseracing, but I think some serious changes have to be done to preserve the sport. It is, however, true that it is usually only a few bad apples who truly push the limits.

  • Obvioulsly you're not involved with the horse rescue industry which tries to pick the horses out of the trash once they are discarded. The issue is not a "few bad apples" it's a structural one.

  • As a matter of fact, I am involved with the horse rescue industry - specifically with rescuing race horses. I'm on the board of CANTER. It's the few bad apples who take advantage of the current structure and ultimately if allowed to continue the way they do, they will ruin the sport.

So yes, there is a structural problem as well but being involved in racing and having many friends in the business as well, I will stick to my "few bad apples" in the sport as a whole.

  • Deer wendyu1

do u got rare horses ther r racing??

cuz I need an answer on a BIG qestion!

  • flydude 1063, you've missed the entire point of this video. This video is not about the times that the rules of horseracing are effective for the horses; it's about the times the rules don't work. The person who did this video has been very involved in horseracing for years. She has seen the best in owners, trainers, and tracks, and the worst. She is asking the industry to step up and fix itself at the broken places.

  • Hi My name is cassidy and i have a horse name devils reine which he was racing for to long he raced for 8 years and he still thinks it is racing time and he doesnt he is a 17 hands and i cant find any videos of him!

  • These animals are born and bred to run. They love it. They would be miserable if not allowed to do what they were bred to do. Of course accidents in racing are horrible. It would be great if we could eliminate them all, but that isn't going to happen in any sport. People don't call for the end of football because a player is seriously hurt.

If you really believe horses are used and abused like you're saying, arrange to spend some time at a local race track if you have one near you.

  • I know a lot about racing and am active with my local track. I have friends who are trainers and exercise rider. I like racing. I want the sport to clean up it's act and take more responsibility for the care and welfare of their athletes. There are misguided people in the business who will take advantage of a weak system. The sport needs to toughen up to deal with them so those guys won't be the demise of the entire sport.

  • Do you not think in the States they need to something about the false dirt they race on???

  • I'm not sure exactly what you mean - whether they should mandate artificial dirt surfaces or not. Personally, I'm a proponent of artificial dirt tracks.

  • In the UK a false surface is ground that is deeper than it looks or rides different to how it looks. It just seems that alot of horses in the US break far more legs in racing than UK flat horses. They also run in far poorer conditions there than they do here i.e waterlogged tracks etc. If they ran on better surfaces such as polytrack surely there would be less injury's? I also think that the use of steroids should be banned as they are here promoting a much healthier sport for all involved.

  • Football players don't often play into their late '40's, which would be about equivalent to brave miners 13 years of age. And their retirements are VERY well financed by the sport they got hurt for, whereas the opposite is all too often true for equine athletes! Also a football player can tell his coach if he's too hurt to play--a horse can't and most will instinctively hide an injury because in the wild the obviously hurt ones were targeted by predators. (Now targets of kill buyers)

  • Opps -you kinda missed the point! It doesn't matter how they are treated at the track ... but how they are treated once they are not USEFUL to the track.

  • The horses need to form a union??? HUH???

It also should be pointed out that many, many horses are abused, mal-nourished, and just not properly taken care of by their owners (outside of racing). Horses that run anywhere in the USA are checked over by a vet every single day. No private horse owner can do that. You should really research your facts before posting this stuff. You're way off.

  • i think they need to change but they dident kill barbaro because he wasent any use they did it because he was in too much pain they did try to save him you know,

  • Hey, nice video. I hope you don't mind but I added mine as a response, we need to get every single person to support a change.

  • Wendy,

Perfect! As soon as I started the video I whispered "Brave Miner". Oh JOY, bless you this day. I will never, never forget "Brave Miner" and your quest to rescue him. Thanks Wendy for a wonderful job and great production.

  • Thank you so much for making this video. It was beautifully done. The music was just perfect.

  • I have never understood why there is no fund set up to care for horses that are no longer able to race due to age or injury. It could be funded by requiring breeders, owners and trainers to each put aside a very small percentage of their winnings for that purpose. A successful model is already widely used by the NFL, NBA, MLB, etc. Unfortunately these hard-working creatures aren't represented by a horses union.

  • ah! The horses need to form a union! Strikes could be interesting when they decide to picket. :)

Seriously, thanks for your comment. As you know, the older horse issue is important to me. TB racing could learn from the standardbreds who set an age limit. You can't

  • I hit post before I was done! darn it - I hate it when the phone rings..

I wanted to say "you can't trust the owners to do the right thing by the horse".

  • there are. lots. I know Longrun is HUGE around here. they take retired racehorses and find homes for them. at yearling sales and such there's always tons of ads and donations set up for long run.

that's why I don't get people saying "we need to get horse racing officials to start a change!" when they're already doing a lot. people don't seem to realize that they are aware of the problem

  • horses are not expendable but living breathing creatures not the toss away animals the racing industry views them as. If you breed them, race them provide homes for them. Love them and appreciate them. They are not your cash cow for glory and trophies. Respect them. Care for them properly. Not use and abuse them.

    Nonnie

  • Thanks Nonnie for your comments. Obviously I agree with you.
