Great player. Give him a break. He is a player, he is not God. He will not be perfect everyday or meet everybody's taste at once. And at the end, he got the job and we did not.
To be honest, I don't think this is really a fair assessment of his playing because the recording quality is kinda shitty. He's obviously a great player with great musicianship (he's the goddamn principle of the lso) but some recording engineer screwed up in recording him and now everyone is bitching. So long story short, stop bitching.
I think they changed the sound because in the scene where he played, the guy talked, then he played again, the guy's voice was a lot quieter. They probably lowered the volume electronically since he was playing directly at the camera.
@TheRc0211 I think your talking about a mute. There are various types of mutes for brass instruments. They can change the timbre of the instrument or reduce the volume to make it sound softer.
Give Phil a break. He is very young and better than most are at his age. His playing was very good. He still has a lot to learn but is an excellent player compared to anyone.
Both top comments exclude his actual playing for his rank. This has little to do with his musicianship and talent. The rebuttals to the negative opinions, or "haters" [terrible childish word], are bad. Speak about what he played, not his chair.
I'd say his articulations were fine, very clean. Was he using a mute of some sort? His sound seemed changed... I didn't like the tone very much, but then again I usually go for softer and more melodic brass sounds anyways.

@benjaminsurber Currently I think he's using one of Schilke's B series and some form of a Denis Wick Mouthpiece but in this video he's using a Bach Stradivarius and again some form of bach mouthpiece.
Ha, it's funny because I doubt the 'haters' have actually seen Phil Cobb play, because he's one of the best trumpet players I've ever watched, and by far the best I've ever seen play in person. Also, there's only one person of his position in the world, and most of the haters just wish that they could have reached that standard, and that position in such a renowned orchestra, instead of falling at a hurdle early on.

I'm amazed at some of the masterclass comments. Andytrumpet66, if you are so capable, why are you not principal trumpet in the LSO? The job was advertised publicly and open auditions were held. The only serious rebuttal to playing of this quality is a video of your own 'better' version. You name your trumpet prof - not naming yourself?
I understand jealously will be caused by talent like this, but when someone is THIS good, just sit back and enjoy it!
Sheesh, I never realised there were so many jealous trumpeters out there. As for red mark on lip? Non pressure method? Who cares! Get over yourselves...
I have played and met many fine musicians that leave mouthpiece marks upon their lips. They had amazing range, endurance, tone, articulation... All that good attributes. Phillip could have just shaved too close that morning.
As far as Maurice Murphy. John Williams mentions him by Name upon reflecting on the LSO's association with his Star Wars and film scores. We should be so lucky and talented to leave an impression like that on any conductor.
ok, he's way infanately better than me. But after he plays he has a huge "mark of the beast" (mouthpiece mark).. is he using a lot of pressure or is it just me?

Maurice Murphy played cornet in Black Dyke, though he played trumpet and had the trumpet sound in his head, this guy still has the cornet sound. Listen to Maurice Andre and the masters of the instrument, then he`ll be able to do a masterclass!
@andytrumpet66 I'm sure you are correct and the board and the extremely tough audition process, on top of the years at music college and having various teachers and influences are wrong. This guy has worked hard to get where he is, and has met more of the top players than you have. The result? You're having a good old bitch and name dropping on youtube, on a video where he is principal of the LSO. Who's opinion matters...?
Masterclass (he`s not a master by any means) should be giving students good tips, not screwing the mouthpiece on your chops!! Support the sound with the air, if he can`t play high, do tonguing exercises (as Derek Watkins recommends) to centre the sound and aid in upper register or practice pedal tones (as Norman Archibald advised me).
I played lead in a big band on a Bach 1.5C on a Schilke B1 (with Bob Reeves valve alignment) for 18 years, playing notes your orchestral guys would use a E flat or piccolo trumpet for. It looks like he is getting back pressure from mis-alignment of his valves, suggest he tries Bob Reeves in USA to align his valves, as Bach don`t have a reputation for aligned valves. How can you condone using pressure?
@andytrumpet66 - how much of Philip Cobb have you heard? Rather than dismissing his talent and giving your own written masterclass, perhaps you could go and listen to him, and you'd soon realise that he has great stamina, his range is class and his musicality persuaded the LSO to hire him above much older players. You are also far too prescriptive. Every player has a different embouchure and most use some kind of pressure, even great ones.
@andytrumpet66 Using an Eb doesn't help playing high, it's purely for timbre change. You play for big band and are complaining about an orchestral player? It's a completely different mindset, as you said when you were comparing brass bands and orchestras.
Norman Archibald my trumpet professor 1986-7 used non-pressure and hammered out high G`s in Phantom, the deps used to use piccolo trumpet when playing lead trumpet in the show. If Phil is using pressure in a demonstration within the range, how is he when he is in an orchestral setting trying to cut through an orchestra?? Norman played on a Bach 1, this guy is on a Curry I believe and struggling

Maurice Murphy will always be the master. This doesn`t do anything for me, sounds like a Sally Army cornet player playing trumpet, looks like he uses pressure as red marks on his top lip. Sounds like he was brought up in brass bands and still has the mindset of a cornet player. Cornet, flugelhorn, piccolo trumpet and Bb trumpet etc are totally different beasts. I am sure the LSO hired him for his talent, I don`t personally like his sound, sounds too generic, missing something??
The man plays beautifully, his technique seems to serve the musical expression quite well, the LSO doesn't hire players who aren't the complete package, so to the nitpickers, your time is better spent learning how to play.
There's also a beautiful, warm, cornet-like quality to his sound, which I may be imagining!
To all bashers: This is HIS sound. Its HIS style. It's HIS music. YOUR idea is YOUR sound, music, etc. No matter how he plays this it is automatically great because it is is own music, and nobody elses. The reason he got the LSO gig is because he sells the way he plays. He isn't trying to be Bud, Phil, or Maurice. His music is his own. I would be willing to make a bet that the LSO got tons of players who did EXCELLENT Maurice impersonations. But who wants to hear another Maurice?
To the chap who suggested Philip Cobb breath better-As a player myself, I can tell you, he is breathing to the bottom. To play these orchestral excerpts well with effective dynamic control and phrasing REQUIRED, you have to fill your sack from the bottom to the collar bone... and you have to do it quickly. As noted by Nigel in the beginning. In addition, his overall sound will adjust when composited with the orchestra. With strings and concert hall, he will adjust accordingly. LISTENING.
@TheRunescapefan3 It takes a lot of practice in the low register as well as in the high register to hit those notes. I've been playing for 8 years and I am still no where of capable of hitting that high E with the control and tonality that he has. Truly remarkable. Keep practicing though! The high Range is definitely one of the coolest things about trumpet that sets it a part from most other brass instruments
@admiralkirk77062 I see your point and I do agree with you. There is always room for interpretation, but you are right. I think however that how you play the articulations can still be expressed differently. Like they say in the clip, listening to multiple people play one piece of music will give a good idea as to how to play it or how you would want to play it. There is always room for interpretation as long as the idea of what is being played is followed.
omg... all i can say is, the high note = will take me a while to learn how to get higher notes... im a second year trumpet player, and the highest note i can get to without warm up is a A - B, depends. but in short, the high note he played; will take me a while to achieve...
A very talented trumpeter! As a brass player (second to strings) and a classically trained tenor, I think that he would benefit by taking lower breaths and not breathing in his chest.
This was amazing! Well done, and it's awesome that he's a salvation army cornet player. I too come from a back ground in the salvation army and I still play cornet there.
I'm a little dissapointed about all of the comments of articulation and what not. Music is expressive, not anal and I guarantee there are plenty of professional cornet/ trumpet players that will back me up on this. It's like art. Some of the greatest painters of all time didn't get that way coloring within the lines.
@giantmonster9009 articulations still MUST be followed though..... otherwise what's the point of slurs, staccato's, tongued notes, etc etc. if people will just play what they wish? musicality comes AFTER correct articulations are followed. any professional can u tell that too.
Good luck in the job Philip. RIP Maurice Murphy - never to be forgotten. To get this post in a world ranking orchestra at your age is pretty staggering. Reminiscent of James Watson and the RPO in the 1970s. Pleased it's gone to a brass bander!!!! Any chance of guesting at Whit Friday in Saddleworth some time? Well done.
lol theres so many haters! Stop talking about his articulations and phrasing he can do whatever the hell he wants he is the principle trumpet player for lso! and what makes you so awesome that you can talk. Post a video and stop hiding behind a youtube account.
@tealtoejam How many Trumpet players does it take to change a lightbulb? 1 to change it, 50 to sit and talk about how much better they would have done it...
What a fantastic talent! What a sound! His father and brother were both players. He got his first cornet at age 3-1/2. Things you do well at an early age are very natural and stay with you. Extremely impressive trumpeter. They don't hire just anybody to play principal at the London Symphony btw.
I'm sure they have their reasons for playing the way they did. It could've been a mistake, or it could have been intentional. But until Cobb and/or Gomm answer Admiralkirk's questions, we won't know for sure. I'm also wondering why they changed markings too.
The LSO was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of its former Principal Trumpet, Maurice Murphy, on Thursday 28 October. Our thoughts and condolences are with his wife, children and grandchildren.
In 2007, Maurice retired from the LSO after 30 years as its Principal Trumpet.
@elliott111uk That's about the most pathetic reason I've ever heard in my life. This is called a MASTERCLASS, and all trumpet players around the world are listening exactly how it is played to gain maximum benefit..... if he isn't playing all the correct articulations & not holding notes the proper length & etc. that's not doing the piece of music justice.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Phil, why didn't you play the correct articulations in Don Juan? The 2nd time you slurred INTO the high B when it's clearly marked to tongue it, and at least once you also slurred into the F on the 5th measure when it's supposed to be tongued. In addition, on Mahler, why didn't you hold the last note the entire 6 beats (as marked) and play the low F at all? You also neglected many of the crescendo & descrendo's throughout. Cuz for a principal trumpeter I would expect nothing but PERFECTION.
@mrclitlips Was I talking to you, fag? I didn't think so, so YOU sfu. I asked legitimate questions & am awaiting their legit answer. Not very impressed with the vid.....
No really, shut up. He's definitely better than you, and I'm sure he wasn't acting like this was a performance. I said this in another comment on this video, but if Valery Gergiev and Phil's colleagues voted him into this position, I'm sure he's fine.
Don't respond to this calling me a "fag," unless you're under the age of 18.
@ThaSchwab Are you stupid? Whether he's better than me or not isn't even the issue. Performance or not, notations on music are put there FOR A REASON, therefore they should be followed. You most likely are tone deaf since I'm still having to explain this to you -- poor guy.... either that or you're just extremely ignorant when it comes to music. Besides, I believe I directed my comment to PHIL GOMM, not you, correct? Yeah that's what I thought so keep quiet.
@ThaSchwab Actually it was much more than just 1 man... like admiral, I have a pretty technical ear and he could've followed the music much more exact, and if you notice the last note on Mahler was indeed only about 4 beats... admiral has valid points, though I wouldn't have worded it quite like he did... anyway it'd be nice if they answer so we can all know :)
@ThaSchwab Admiral has a point, it would have been better if Phil had followed all of the notations, but still, I don't think it's worth making a huge deal about it.
What, do you think the trumpeters that audition for the YTSO won't be able to do it themselves? And who cares if he didn't count the correct number of beats, you obviously aren't talented enough to be at the helm of the LSO's brass section.
@ThaSchwab Dude, are you as stupid as your username indicates? Who cares?! Are you serious? Do you not expect a PRINCIPAL TRUMPETER to play an excerpt like Mahler 5 absolutely flawlessly? If not, then obviously your standards are set lower your IQ... which is quite sad and since I'm the one who actually pointed it out, common sense (if you have any at all) should tell you that I can easily count the beats as I also pointed out in my message. Lets hear YOUR rendition of this-if u can play it!
Clearly his colleagues and Valery Gergiev thought he sounded fine when they voted him into this position. I can't play the trumpet, but I know a good player when I hear one and I'm sure he's better than you. You're the only one to post any comment criticizing his playing. In fact, since I can't play it, what about YOU?
??? Why was only 3 of the 5 performed? What about the Haydn Concerto, and also the Stravinsky piece? That's what I wanted to hear most... On Leonore and Strauss, why was it played on a totally different key then what was written?? That is very confusing...
I have to say, my favorite part of watching other people play brass and woodwind instruments is the faces they make.

There is always room for interpretation as long as the idea of what is being played is followed.
giantmonster9009 1 year ago
omg... all i can say is, the high note = will take me a while to learn how to get higher notes... im a second year trumpet player, and the highest note i can get to without warm up is a A - B, depends. but in short, the high note he played; will take me a while to achieve...
TheRunescapefan3 1 year ago
A very talented trumpeter! As a brass player (second to strings) and a classically trained tenor, I think that he would benefit by taking lower breaths and not breathing in his chest.

This was amazing! Well done, and it's awesome that he's a salvation army cornet player. I too come from a back ground in the salvation army and I still play cornet there.
I'm a little dissapointed about all of the comments of articulation and what not. Music is expressive, not anal and I guarantee there are plenty of professional cornet/ trumpet players that will back me up on this. It's like art. Some of the greatest painters of all time didn't get that way coloring within the lines.
giantmonster9009 1 year ago

What a fantastic talent! What a sound! His father and brother were both players. He got his first cornet at age 3-1/2. Things you do well at an early age are very natural and stay with you. Extremely impressive trumpeter. They don't hire just anybody to play principal at the London Symphony btw.
SchilkePiccolo 1 year ago
I'm sure they have their reasons for playing the way they did. It could've been a mistake, or it could have been intentional. But until Cobb and/or Gomm answer Admiralkirk's questions, we won't know for sure. I'm also wondering why they changed markings too.

Maurice Murphy
The LSO was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of its former Principal Trumpet, Maurice Murphy, on Thursday 28 October. Our thoughts and condolences are with his wife, children and grandchildren.
In 2007, Maurice retired from the LSO after 30 years as its Principal Trumpet.

elliott111uk 1 year ago
@elliott111uk That's about the most pathetic reason I've ever heard in my life. This is called a MASTERCLASS, and all trumpet players around the world are listening exactly how it is played to gain maximum benefit..... if he isn't playing all the correct articulations & not holding notes the proper length & etc. that's not doing the piece of music justice.
admiralkirk77062 1 year ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
Phil, why didn't you play the correct articulations in Don Juan? The 2nd time you slurred INTO the high B when it's clearly marked to tongue it, and at least once you also slurred into the F on the 5th measure when it's supposed to be tongued. In addition, on Mahler, why didn't you hold the last note the entire 6 beats (as marked) and play the low F at all? You also neglected many of the crescendo & descrendo's throughout. Cuz for a principal trumpeter I would expect nothing but PERFECTION.

ThaSchwab 1 year ago
@ThaSchwab Are you stupid? Whether he's better than me or not isn't even the issue. Performance or not, notations on music are put there FOR A REASON, therefore they should be followed. You most likely are tone deaf since I'm still having to explain this to you -- poor guy.... either that or you're just extremely ignorant when it comes to music. Besides, I believe I directed my comment to PHIL GOMM, not you, correct? Yeah that's what I thought so keep quiet.
admiralkirk77062 1 year ago
@admiralkirk77062
Oh gee, he ignored one little articulation. Might as well disband the orchestra.
ThaSchwab 1 year ago
@ThaSchwab Actually it was much more than just 1 man... like admiral, I have a pretty technical ear and he could've followed the music much more exact, and if you notice the last note on Mahler was indeed only about 4 beats... admiral has valid points, though I wouldn't have worded it quite like he did... anyway it'd be nice if they answer so we can all know :)
BughouseMASTER 1 year ago
@ThaSchwab Admiral has a point, it would have been better if Phil had followed all of the notations, but still, I don't think it's worth making a huge deal about it.

daejavu2008 1 year ago
@daejavu2008
What, do you think the trumpeters that audition for the YTSO won't be able to do it themselves? And who cares if he didn't count the correct number of beats, you obviously aren't talented enough to be at the helm of the LSO's brass section.
ThaSchwab 1 year ago

@ThaSchwab Dude, are you as stupid as your username indicates? Who cares?! Are you serious? Do you not expect a PRINCIPAL TRUMPETER to play an excerpt like Mahler 5 absolutely flawlessly? If not, then obviously your standards are set lower your IQ... which is quite sad and since I'm the one who actually pointed it out, common sense (if you have any at all) should tell you that I can easily count the beats as I also pointed out in my message. Lets hear YOUR rendition of this-if u can play it!
daejavu2008 1 year ago
@daejavu2008
