  • awful camera guy this is a BASS player on and no close up's of the bass player doing his thang. P.S not Stanley Clarke

  • I can't see the bassist that clearly...is it Stanley Clarke?

  • oldie but goodie, too bad they did not have the camera on the bass player byron miller when he did his bass solo

  • I wish this was a better recording. I saw George Duke at the Circle Star Theater in Redwood City in the early 80s with War.

    What a Concert.

  • That's Byron Miller

  • This has got to be one of the most Funkiest jams ever made in the '70's. George Duke, Ndugu on drums, and Sheila E(scovedo) all together on the Midnight Special

  • That's Byron on bass. Stanley never played this song

  • is that Byron Scott on bass or L. Johnson?

  • Damn --- that was off da chain!!!!!!!!!! They just don't make music like that anymore!!!

  • 3:58 to the end is the funkiest part to me.

  • OH MY GOD deez is so pHuNkEeEeE

  • Leon Ndugu Chancler on Drums / Vocals / Percussion

  • @pistolCrockett I just added his name to the tags. Thanks for the info.

  • @pistolCrockett This boy is BAAAD! He's more funky than George!!!

  • Great!

I saw this them live in Baltimore with Pleasure as the opening act.

    Way Too Fonkay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @usualsuspectsmovemen Ahh Man, You're really taking it back now! I Love the group Pleasure. Now I'm only 38, but really appreciate and has been very deep into jazz & funk for a minute.

  • Super funky!

  • this song just give me goose bumps its sooo funky take me back to being a shorty in the Chi

  • I've heard this cut many times. It's great to see them actually do it live on stage. aMAZing! I love his vocal work with Zappa and company.

Duke is one of our nation's great treasures.

He's right up there with the immortal Stevie Wonder.

    Let us grooove.

  • @lancethrustworthy yea they dont play anything now a days except dat machines n shit

  • Ruling...

  • You know, I think I have a dim childhood memory of seeing this band on TV during the 70s. Never saw them before or since, nor did I know the songs, but this might be the ones I remember. Another flashback brought to you by YouTube!

  • I'm pretty sure this was from Midnight Special.

  • @MoondogMayne

I think you're right. I suggest you add Midnight Special to your tags, then. There's plenty of people my age out there searching for old clips from that show; you'll get more traffic.

  • I'm afraid if I put a Midnight Special tag on it, it will get flagged for copyright violation.

  • @MoondogMayne

Ah, gotcha. Yes, I'd hate to see this clip go poof.

  • @MoondogMayne DAMN YO UR RITE. THINK OF SOMETHING 4 US WHO LIKE GOOD MUSIC N NOT THIS SHIT OUT HERE NOW

  • @TheSanityInspector T.R.U.E

  • George Duke is only like the most complete musician ever.....look it up. From classical, RnB, to funk as you see it here....

  • Met George backstage at the Tulalip Casino during the Duke/Clarke tour. Signed all my albums and 200 Motels video.

  • well...i knew george duke from back in the day....in frisco..... he wasnt famous then but when he played in the clubs, we would check him out, not realizin he would be famous one day.....now, here he is.......THE FABULOUS GEORGE DUKE!!!!!!...I live in Ohio now, but the memories live on!!

  • Thanks for the post, I really enjoyed hearing Geo Duke.

  • Funky...Simply funky. I know George Duke is the man, but it's a pleasure hearing and seeing a drummer - Ndugu, playing and singing. Please bring back real music.

  • Ndugu was not as tight as Sheila E,

  • you must be smoking meth and crack sheila e is a average drummer, checkout the late gaylord birch who played with the pointer sisters on yes we can and betcha got a chick on the side

  • @tonyskins19

I know all about Gaylord, he was a friend of mine, just like Sheila and Ndugu.

Gaylord did not have that much gravity but he had loads of groove.

    God rest his soul

Mr. Escevedo sent his daughter out well rounded

  • @johnnyguitarcarson

Ndugu is a great drummer though and being tight is not everything. It's good to have a looseness sometimes. I saw Ndugu with Santana when i was about 13yrs old and he was smoking...and not meth either.

  • Byron's Precision sounds like that because he had an active preamp built for it. They put the schematic in Guitar Player magazine

  • byron miller was george's regular bassist. stanley would guest-star on some LPs. i saw this tour in Summer 78, Pittsburgh's Stanley Theater. Very hot show. This was the Dukey Stick tour and Sheila E was just coming out. -- timm coxx says ...

  • 1.36-1.38.

    4.26-4.28

  • .27-.29

  • Good job, Byron!

  • George Duke!! Couldn't get FUNKIER!! My all time favorite is I AM FOR REAL!!! :-)

  • dont they look like they're having fun!!

  • Pure, unwashed FUNK!! I remember watchin' the original broadcast back in tha day. Just as funky now as it was then! Thanx for posting!!

  • One of the best live performances ever.....original.

  • Who is playing bass on this Byron Miller or Stanley Clark

  • Byron Miller is playing the bass in this clip

  • That was amazing.

  • FANTASTIC!! Thanks for sharing!! You got the whole concert?

  • Sorry, but that's all I have. I wish I did have the whole thing. To be honest, I don't even remember what this is from.

  • I think this was the Midnight Special.

  • That's Ndugu on Drums and Vocals....

  • this is too much. this is great to be watchin this.

  • Just pure funk, cannot do better than this joint right here.

  • Sheila E. doesn't get the respect she deserves,IMO....her drumming in the SOTT concert movie is phenomenal!

  • who is on bass ???????

  • Byron Miller.

  • THIS KICKS AZZ!!!

  • Now THIS is funk...

  • Charles Johnson (LGF) on guitar

  • Johnson's one of the masters. Thanks for pointing him out. The stage is packed with gifted folks. I just wish the audio wasn't so poor. Oh well.

  • Yeah, the video quality isn't so great either. But then again, the recording is over 30 years old and has been transferred through several different formats. I wish I knew how to digitally remaster.

  • There's more old clips of Charles "Icarus" Johnson being uploaded from time to time, elsewhere on YouTube. Someone found some footage of a Japanese concert with him and Stanley Clarke's band. And there's a slew of Al Jarreau clips with him, from the 80s & 90s.

  • thanks for posting! this is classic! Sheila is Rockin that fro! go head! i wasnt even born at this time! LOL

  • This makes me so proud! Upbeat, cutting-edge (at the time), excellent musicianship, and 100% American!

  • y is this video nolonger available'

  • That's just plain funky! Love Sheila E. on the drums.

  • She is the reason I first picked up a pair of sticks...the art teacher was also my drum coach and he nicknames me Lil Sheila and I thought that was koo becuase I really did admire her back then.

  • Damn thats the Same Bass I got.

  • drop you off into some fownk!

  • "dukey stick" is the name of the song from the album "Don't Let Go"

  • The name of this song is "Reach for It".

  • Yeah your right!dissapointed!!! I'm supposed to be a hughes fan since i was 13....but i'm Dutch hahahahahahahhqha

  • GREAT POST! Sheila E was only 19. Incredible band, Ndugu, Byron, Lynn Davis, Icarus

  • Hey I'm just curious because I checked out your page and I'm wondering how you know all the cats' names like Ndugu. You're a great dancer too by the way.

  • can you please tell me the name of this song
