Such a classic. They opened with this on their recent Summer 2010 tour. I got a meet & greet with the ladies before the show (cuz I got "connections" lol). The gals still rock out.
@wonenergy i knew it - only a women could have made this comment..Ann still has a great voice -that is a reality, is she as nice looking as she was once, like here in this video..no way-no how-not even close-& that is a reality....she needs to do somethg about her body & she still can & should, its not a healthy situation rite now..
@rickyleepilfer I saw the D&G tour in November 1978 and Walter Egan opened up for them at that time. He had a hit with a song called "Magnet and Steel" .
@rickyleepilfe i saw Heart on the same tour - they had just come out w/ "Dog & Butterfly" and they were touring in my area ( south florida) w/ "Firefall" and there was a bit of a riff as to whom was to be the opening band and who would be the main act..Of course Firefall conceded and rightfully so, the bigger band was most definately a liquid white hot "Heart" they opened w/ "Cook w/ fire" (not sure!) but they were great I never knew it was Nancy who played the opening for "Crazy on you"..
@Titter88 Give up on that place people...they are idiots. Inductees are supposed to be elected based upon their contribution and influence in the world of music, and yet Rush isn't in??? I give up. We all know what the Wilson's and co. did for breaking down musical barriers, so screw them.
LETS ALL MAKE A PUSH TO PUT THESE CLASSIC FEMALE ROCKERS AND THE BAND IN THE ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME!!! IT IS A COMPLETE SHAME THEY ARE NOT IN AS OF YET!!!! HOW COULD THEY POSSIBLY NOT BE IN????
@oozilchoo Must have been. There are also videos for Crazy on You and Straight On from this concert as well. This sounds better than the album version..pure talent.
ann wilson is about 29 here. she looks like a innocent young girl but at the time this was out i thought rocker women did endless drugs and had tons of sex.
@The096757 I don't think Ann was a stranger to drugs, but they don't seem to have affected her appearance much. Even today she doesn't have that hardened look most old school rockers have.
back in the late 70s and early 1980s they seemed like women who would do tons magic mushrooms and lsd and have tons of sex with many men yet were real mean & cruel to men and young boys like witches but ever since the mid 1980s( after seeing them live) i loved them and came to appreciate the mean girl image of the 1970s and early 1980s along with the glam rocker image of the mid 1980s.
@The096757 Interesting comment regarding witches, I seem to recall an article commenting on Heart being involved with witchcraft and never understood where this came from. Someone misunderstand "Magic man"?? Cover of "Little Queen" freak someone out?? Where did you find they looked like witches and were cruel to young boys? Growing up in the 80's I unfortunately missed all the stuff printed about them at the start of their career. As for the sex part babyj1996 seems to know the scoop lol
people said they were charles mason followers too and some guy told me in 1988 that in the late 1970s ann had legal problems for having sex with a 16 year old boy? who knows what's true.
but they did seem like mean women and i was intimidated by that image/perception i had of them when i was younger. now i love that image.
the picture on their 1980s greatest hits/live cd has a picture of women who look mean who did lots of microdot.
cover of little queen they look like medieval sorceresses to me. ann has pale skin and medieval costumes. i just watched behind the music with heart 6/24 at 9p.m. again for about the 50th time. it will be on again in the next couple of days on classic vh1.
Great behind scenes video and shows the reality. What a band back then! Must A&N still rule! Oh the drum beginning just came on; Ben Smith their awesome drummer now! Love him and the band! omg, as I'm watching, I'm ready for some live heart...coming in a couple months. Rawk On people.
Don't laugh. Was there a UFO caught on this video.Look at 4:14 in the sky above the guitar players headstock moving left to right and then turning around his head.It sure doesn't look like a helicopter or airplane to me.I watched it fram per frame.Tell me what you guys and gals think. I have always loved Heart and still do.Seen them in Concert 3 times.
Could be one of the greatest opening songs ever. I know because I saw this concert 3 times. They were amazing. I always will love Ann and Nancy, but this is Heart. The original line up. Roger Fisher is a great guitarist. It's is hard to believe that this was over 30 years ago. Thanks for the post. Great memories.
Im soooooooo tired of reading about how nice Ann's tits are and how smokin hot Nance is....Thats not only obvious but there is so much more to be said for the music they play and how tight a band they are and how well they play their instruments...for Christs sake...the sound and quality and sheer artistry on this particular LIVE performance is fucking INSANE....If I were there LIVE I would have peeeeeeeed....This is a perfect example of Heart @ thier very best in what they do!
@MrMedusaLvamp Well, saying Ann has nice tits is alot better than the usual " Ann has turned into a blimp" comment. Great perfomance though...I would have to agree this concert, wherever it was, was the best I have ever heard the original lineup sound.
I love this backstage video--my favorite part though is when they are singing that old song by little Peggy March "I Will follow Him" and then Roger Fisher turns around and sings into the camera--omg he is TO DIE FOR! I LOVE YOU ROGER! I CAN BE YOUR NANCY LOL! Youtube "Heart Alive Montage Long Version"
Great video!!! Thanks for posing it, much much appreciated. Ann Wilson.... the most underated female vocalist of all time..... such true feeling & emotion in all of Hearts songs... especially live. Hands down ... Ann is arguably the greatest female vocalist in my lifetime!!!
Once Ian Gillan and the boys saw Ann Wilson, they would have realized that she could have "burned the place to the ground" with her presence. ANN WILSON; THE GODDESS OF ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ANN is so hot in this performance...... she could have IGNITED FREAKING WATER!!!!! Todays so called Female Rockers.... step the hell aside..... HEART & BENETAR paved the road for You no talent fakes!!!! ROCK ON HEART!!!
Am I mistaken, or was this the same concert that Roger "snaps" at and smashes his guitar on stage? The clip I saw sure looked like they were dressed the same as here, but it was zoomed out quite far back and hard to tell 100%. Great performance though.
HarpoSpoke - again, you are finding someone (me) other than the RRHoF committee to lash out on. I have been a fan of Heart ever since Magic Man hit the airwaves. If you want me to post the criteria that is posted on the RRHoF site because you are so lazy to do that yourself, then I will. Even though, you'll want to come back and argue with me on why Heart should be inducted, even though I didn't create that criteria. Watch.
I always assumed that the version on Dog and Butterfly was doctored in the studio...but it sounds spot on here. But I suppose most of their songs were spot on live. A really good band.
I also didn't know that Nancy played the harmonica part.
I wonder what song they actually opened up with just when Ann was about to hit the stage? I know the beginning part of the video and the actual live performance in the video were two separate dates. Ann's wearing all black in the beginning, then on stage she is wearing a pinkish colored outfit.
Lucky you that you got to see them when they still had the original members. That version of Heart was just magical compared to now. And thanks for answering my question.
RRHOF never makes sense... neither Heart nor Rush are in, despite decades of success. In my opinion the Wilson's were among the first women to prove that beauty and talent could be together in a rock package. No longer did young ticket buyers have to expect the usual hardboiled appearance (J Joplin ) from female performers and I am sure that helped sell out a few concerts.
Been listening since 1975 ... why Ann and Nancy aren't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by now is a tragedy, especially when a good many acts who are cite them as influences. Ann's still got the best female rock voice without equal!
RRHOF criteria is mostly how a group influenced other groups and pop culture for 20+ yrs.. Although I don't like the criteria, it makes sense of the people that were inducted. Now if Heart didn't make it no bones about it that they were heavily influenced by Led Zeppelin, they probably would have a better chance in making it. It's all politics, really. Several 1,000s vote, then the groups that got the most votes from those several 1,000s, has yet another voting done by another set of people.
@IconVanity Apparently the HoF voters have no clue how important Heart was to female musicians all over the world. Not just "the singer" as a few women were in the past, they for the very first time were the leaders of a BAND and true musicians. It was a very big deal that Nancy was playing guitar. (And playing well)
@HarpoSpoke - those voters probably see other female rock groups or female led rock groups such as The Runaways, Suzi Quatro and Janis Joplin (whom was inducted already I believe) as having more influence on female rockers than Heart, thus overlooking them. Personally, I don't know why it should be important to Ann and Nancy to be inducted into the RRHoF, since, I would think their goal in the music business is to create memorable music.
@IconVanity Joplin isn't in the "hard rock" category so that's not accurate. Neither Quatro or the Runaways had success...therefor they had far less impact on female hard rock musicians. Heart proved you could be female, rock hard, AND have success doing it.
@HarpoSpoke - Janis Joplin was inducted into the RRHoF in 1995. Quatro did in fact have success, especially with the song "Can the can" in 1973.
HarpoSpoke - what do you think is the criteria to be inducted into the RRHoF, since, you seem to not know, especially when you think there's a "Hard Rock" category. Go to the RRHoF site and read the criteria, instead of trying to argue with me because you are upset AT the RRHoF committee for not inducting Heart.
@IconVanity Let me see if I have this right...you are allowed to argue against Heart being in....but those arguing for them have to take it elsewhere? Do I have that right?
Are you seriously suggesting "Can the Can" had any impact on ANYTHING?
Yes...influencing women to play hard rock is different from what Joplin did. Just like Led Zep had a different influence from the Beatles.
@HarpoSpoke - I am following the RRHoF's criteria, something you are not doing. THAT is the big difference. The criteria is there at their official site. The song "Can the can" was a hit long before Heart had a hit song, but, somehow you want to discard that fact.
And how do you know women playing hard rock weren't influenced by Janis Joplin? You actually believe Heart has influenced women to play rock and front their own bands and no other female rockers that were there before Heart did?
@IconVanity At least we all learned what a big hit "Can the Can" was. (Anyone ever hear that one?)
So why is Led Zep in? The Beatles had hits long before they did. And surely the Beatles had an influence on hard rock. You are supporting the idea that only the FIRST influence should be in.
Your last sentence is a straw man. I never said that.
People have heard the song "Can the Can", it was number 1 in both Europe and Australia in 1973.
Led Zeppelin is in because they have influenced a lot of groups and their music and sound, Heart is a prime example. Led Zeppelin was heavily influenced by the Beatles, but created their own sound from the get go, a sound that had influenced Heart for their sound. And no, I have never claimed only the FIRST influenced should be in, this is why Madonna had been inducted. She was influenced by Blondie.
As for your statement of "Your last sentence is a straw man. I never said that.", you sure are staying consistence to your selective comprehension. e.g. HarpoSpoke @IconVanity Joplin isn't in the "hard rock" category so that's not accurate. Neither Quatro or the Runaways had success...therefor they had far less impact on female hard rock musicians. Heart proved you could be female, rock hard, AND have success doing it.
@IconVanity I'm not seeing any compelling reason why Heart should be kept out here. They were clearly one of the most influential bands for female musicians who wanted to play hard rock. (The intro to "Crazy on You" remains the "Eruption" for female guitarists.) Lynyrd Skynyrd it in even though The Allman Brothers were first.
@HarpoSpoke - the RRHoF inducts basically a handful of artists per year, first of all. Second of all, no one said Heart won't one day be inducted into the RRHoF either. Third off, just because you see Heart as a driving force for women in rock and influenced women to play hard rock, again, there are other female rockers that has done the same thing prior to Heart being around, yet, they too have not been inducted yet. The Runaways is a prime example. They had NO men in that group.
@IconVanity We've already established being first isn't important. Heart had more impact than the Runaways due in part to their mass success. If first is all that counts, Bach is in and everyone else is out.
The HoF has wasted those few picks. Somehow they've found room for Jimmy Cliff, Bill Black, D.J. Fontana, Spooner Oldham, Bobby Womack, John Cougar, The Ventures, The Ronettes, Patti Smith, Percy Sledge, Jackson Browne, The Dells, Traffic, Steve Douglas, Floyd Cramer, Benny Benjamin...
@IconVanity ...continued (the list is too funny), Righteous Brothers, Brenda Lee, Gene Pitney, Solomon Burke, The Flamingos, Talking Heads, Richie Valens, Loving Spoonful, The Moonglows, Bonnie Raitt, Charles Brown, Del Shannon, Dusty Springfield, The Staple Singers, Lloyd Price, Jelly Roll Morton, The Rascals...
That MAY cover half the odd picks for the "Hall of Fame". You can smell the agenda. Being active in the 60s is a big plus to those biased baby boomers.
@HarpoSpoke - again give it time, Heart just might be inducted into the RRHoF. Heart's "mass success" is nice, but, did it influence rock and roll music in any way when they sounded like a female led version of Led Zeppelin? The Runaways have influenced other artists that became successful in their own rights and these groups have expressed it as well of the Runaways' influence on them. L7, The Bangles and The Go-Gos just to name a few. It is not about being first, but impact.
@IconVanity I fully expect Heart to get in. I just expect it take time due to the biases of the voters. Both Anne and Nancy are huge influences on female musicians (having played with female musicians for the past 15 years I know this first-hand).
Anne and Nancy actually explained why Led Zep was such an influence on them in a YouTube vid. ...There weren't any females for them to look up to in that genre. Can you guess the importance of that?
@HarpoSpoke - first off, it is Ann and not Anne. Second off, just because you played with female musicians for the past 15 years, I too have played music with female musicians, but for the past 20+ years, and none have said Heart was the reason they decided to play music, but, have mentioned male musicians and/or the Runaways influenced them to give it a shot.
I've read in (now old) magazines of both Ann and Nancy saying a female artist that influenced them was Joni Mitchell.
If you dislike the RRHoF's format and the voters themselves, why do you want Heart to be inducted into such a club that you seem to have no respect for?
@IconVanity Exactly. Joni Mitchell, Aretha Franklin. Notice there was nobody like them to influence them? They had to arrive at the decision "We want to play like Led Zep" without anyone breaking ground before them.
I guess my experience is totally different from yours. The girls I play with worship Heart. I would say second only to Joplin. (The Runaways aren't in the conversation)
Did you just resort to the spelling police tactic? lol...
@IconVanity The entry for Patti Smythe is telling: In 1975, rock and roll caught a glimpse of what lay ahead when Patti Smith released her debut album,Horses. Its inspired garage-band amateurism flew in the face of increasingly slick rock production values.
Horses arrived at a time when rock and roll needed a jolt from its unadventurous rut and upwardly mobile arena-rock pretensions.
See the bias? They hated that the crude sounds of the 60s ended. Can you guess how they view Heart's music?
@HarpoSpoke - I don't know if those are part of the thousands and thousands of committee voters are from the Baby Boomers generation, since the Baby Boomers were from the 50s and not 60s.
Personally, I don't know why it is that important to you for Heart to be inducted into the RRHoF. If they don't, does that mean Ann and Nancy will pack it in? If it is important for the Wilson sisters to be inducted, then, it will mean they are playing music to be awarded some type of medal and nothing more.
@IconVanity The Baby Boomers were mostly teens in the 60s. That's their "era" and they haven't stopped promoting it since. Their large numbers make their voices loud too.
Nothing is "important". It's not important for Heart to be paid for what they do either, but I think they deserve it.
@IconVanity Same exact logic used by those who wish admittance to clubs, colleges, schools, restaurants, and hotels that don't want to let them in due to a bias.
The RRHoF, deserving or not, has been given importance. It is their obligation to live up to that importance by not ignoring deserving artists because they didn't like the 70s mainstream. They actually delayed putting in bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd and Van Halen. We're still waiting on Boston, Heart, Journey, and KISS.
@HarpoSpoke - the point of even bringing up Suzi Quatro was to counter your point to say Heart influenced females to front rock bands and that's one of the reasons they should be in the RRHoF. Name a female fronted rock band that was influenced by Heart, just ONE would do. Suzi Quatro influenced Joan Jett whom was a big part in influencing her to be in a rock band.
Janis Joplin has influenced women to play rock, Melissa Etheridge has mentioned she was influenced by her. Pink also.
Both Led Zeppelin and the Beatles had a big impact both for music and pop culture, which is another part of the RRHoF's criteria. Now, what big impact has Heart accomplished in influencing music and pop culture?
@IconVanity So you mention the Beatles and Led Zep and claim less influential acts don't belong? They are going to have to kick out most of the artists enshrined now if that's the case.
And now I am done with you, since, again, all you want to do is rant and whine at me about how bad the RRHoF is treating Heart by not inducting them, thinking I am responsible for creating the criteria in the first place. Go to their website and send them an email if you feel so compassionate about Heart being inducted.
@IconVanity Are you seriously suggesting that Heart hasn't influenced women to play music? (Or that Suzi Quatro was more influential?) Lita Ford has actually expressed her admiration for them. Pat Benatar and Gretchen Wilson must surely count. Do you wonder why Suzi Quatro's "hit" isn't featured in Guitar Hero while Heart is? (I don't wonder at all...it's obvious)
Even better is that Heart has influenced MEN. That's why Alice in Chains jump at the chance to play with them.
This classic version of Heart is so warm sounding if that makes any sense at all. The combination of all them give a signature sound that really stands up well to the test of time.
Heart is great. But the whole band really never got their due. All were very talented. The Ladies got the credit and yes they were Heart.
But everyone in the band were very good and gave heart the whole sound they had.
Brings back memories of Ann. My God I had the hots for her. See was just smoke!
Not in the Hall of Fame. It's just sad. When someone with 10% of Hearts talent Madonna is in. Just not right at all. It shows todays kids are voting. They have no clue at all.
Heart at prime. Was at Boston'78 music hall. Roger Fisher stole the show. He was probably one of the best gutarists with one of the most unique sounds of the day. A mix of Townshend's neck bending, Page's sheer power and Jeff Beck jazz mutations all rolled in one fuz/flange sound through Marshalls. What a sound they had! A very capable and intense band then-never equaled again by later Heart.
c'mon.,.....i said c'mon c'mon ....then Roger & nancy come in... such a cool song, perfect opener, like a chant....they can really stretch this one out, do it anyway they want, experiment,

My bud Hood and I saw them on Saturday night

Assembley Hall. Was it Trillion?

@rickyleepilfer I saw them in Birmingham in '79. LeRoux ("New Orleans Ladies") opened for them there. Kickass show!!!

@The096757 I don't think Ann was a stranger to drugs, but they don't seem to have affected her appearance much. Even today she doesn't have that hardened look most old school rockers have.

@TheWhalerfan
back in the late 70s and early 1980s they seemed like women who would do tons magic mushrooms and lsd and have tons of sex with many men yet were real mean & cruel to men and young boys like witches but ever since the mid 1980s( after seeing them live) i loved them and came to appreciate the mean girl image of the 1970s and early 1980s along with the glam rocker image of the mid 1980s.
The096757 1 year ago
@The096757 Interesting comment regarding witches, I seem to recall an article commenting on Heart being involved with witchcraft and never understood where this came from. Someone misunderstand "Magic man"?? Cover of "Little Queen" freak someone out?? Where did you find they looked like witches and were cruel to young boys? Growing up in the 80's I unfortunately missed all the stuff printed about them at the start of their career. As for the sex part babyj1996 seems to know the scoop lol
TheWhalerfan 1 year ago
@TheWhalerfan
people said they were charles mason followers too and some guy told me in 1988 that in the late 1970s ann had legal problems for having sex with a 16 year old boy? who knows what's true.
but they did seem like mean women and i was intimidated by that image/perception i had of them when i was younger. now i love that image.
the picture on their 1980s greatest hits/live cd has a picture of women who look mean who did lots of microdot.

Watch.
IconVanity 1 year ago
@IconVanity Yeah that's it...it's not just commenting on YouTube. I'm clearly desperately searching for a way to lash out at the RRHoF.
And be sure to post every other item on the internet that I'm "too lazy" to post here.
It will be fun to post the names of the artists in the RRHoF who had less impact and influence than Heart after you post their "criteria".
HarpoSpoke 1 year ago
I always assumed that the version on Dog and Butterfly was doctored in the studio...but it sounds spot on here. But I suppose most of their songs were spot on live. A really good band.
I also didn't know that Nancy played the harmonica part.
HarpoSpoke 1 year ago
I wonder what song they actually opened up with just when Ann was about to hit the stage? I know the beginning part of the video and the actual live performance in the video were two separate dates. Ann's wearing all black in the beginning, then on stage she is wearing a pinkish colored outfit.

TheWhalerfan 1 year ago
Been listening since 1975 ... why Ann and Nancy aren't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by now is a tragedy, especially when a good many acts who are cite them as influences. Ann's still got the best female rock voice without equal!
H1bernia61 1 year ago 7
RRHOF criteria is mostly how a group influenced other groups and pop culture for 20+ yrs.. Although I don't like the criteria, it makes sense of the people that were inducted. Now if Heart didn't make it no bones about it that they were heavily influenced by Led Zeppelin, they probably would have a better chance in making it. It's all politics, really. Several 1,000s vote, then the groups that got the most votes from those several 1,000s, has yet another voting done by another set of people.
IconVanity 1 year ago
@IconVanity Apparently the HoF voters have no clue how important Heart was to female musicians all over the world. Not just "the singer" as a few women were in the past, they for the very first time were the leaders of a BAND and true musicians. It was a very big deal that Nancy was playing guitar. (And playing well)
HarpoSpoke 1 year ago
@HarpoSpoke - those voters probably see other female rock groups or female led rock groups such as The Runaways, Suzi Quatro and Janis Joplin (whom was inducted already I believe) as having more influence on female rockers than Heart, thus overlooking them. Personally, I don't know why it should be important to Ann and Nancy to be inducted into the RRHoF, since, I would think their goal in the music business is to create memorable music.
IconVanity 1 year ago
@IconVanity Joplin isn't in the "hard rock" category so that's not accurate. Neither Quatro or the Runaways had success...therefor they had far less impact on female hard rock musicians. Heart proved you could be female, rock hard, AND have success doing it.
HarpoSpoke 1 year ago
@HarpoSpoke - Janis Joplin was inducted into the RRHoF in 1995. Quatro did in fact have success, especially with the song "Can the can" in 1973.
HarpoSpoke - what do you think is the criteria to be inducted into the RRHoF, since, you seem to not know, especially when you think there's a "Hard Rock" category. Go to the RRHoF site and read the criteria, instead of trying to argue with me because you are upset AT the RRHoF committee for not inducting Heart.
IconVanity 1 year ago
@IconVanity Let me see if I have this right...you are allowed to argue against Heart being in....but those arguing for them have to take it elsewhere? Do I have that right?
Are you seriously suggesting "Can the Can" had any impact on ANYTHING?
Yes...influencing women to play hard rock is different from what Joplin did. Just like Led Zep had a different influence from the Beatles.
HarpoSpoke 1 year ago
@HarpoSpoke - I am following the RRHoF's criteria, something you are not doing. THAT is the big difference. The criteria is there at their official site. The song "Can the can" was a hit long before Heart had a hit song, but, somehow you want to discard that fact.
And how do you know women playing hard rock weren't influenced by Janis Joplin? You actually believe Heart has influenced women to play rock and front their own bands and no other female rockers that were there before Heart did?
IconVanity 1 year ago
@IconVanity At least we all learned what a big hit "Can the Can" was. (Anyone ever hear that one?)
So why is Led Zep in? The Beatles had hits long before they did. And surely the Beatles had an influence on hard rock. You are supporting the idea that only the FIRST influence should be in.
Your last sentence is a straw man. I never said that.
HarpoSpoke 1 year ago
People have heard the song "Can the Can", it was number 1 in both Europe and Australia in 1973.
Led Zeppelin is in because they have influenced a lot of groups and their music and sound, Heart is a prime example. Led Zeppelin was heavily influenced by the Beatles, but created their own sound from the get go, a sound that had influenced Heart for their sound. And no, I have never claimed only the FIRST influenced should be in, this is why Madonna had been inducted. She was influenced by Blondie.
IconVanity 1 year ago

(con't)
As for your statement of "Your last sentence is a straw man. I never said that.", you sure are staying consistence to your selective comprehension. e.g. HarpoSpoke @IconVanity Joplin isn't in the "hard rock" category so that's not accurate. Neither Quatro or the Runaways had success...therefor they had far less impact on female hard rock musicians. Heart proved you could be female, rock hard, AND have success doing it.
IconVanity 1 year ago
@IconVanity I'm not seeing any compelling reason why Heart should be kept out here. They were clearly one of the most influential bands for female musicians who wanted to play hard rock. (The intro to "Crazy on You" remains the "Eruption" for female guitarists.) Lynyrd Skynyrd it in even though The Allman Brothers were first.
(Just found "Can the Can"...hilarious song.)
HarpoSpoke 1 year ago
@HarpoSpoke - the RRHoF inducts basically a handful of artists per year, first of all. Second of all, no one said Heart won't one day be inducted into the RRHoF either. Third off, just because you see Heart as a driving force for women in rock and influenced women to play hard rock, again, there are other female rockers that has done the same thing prior to Heart being around, yet, they too have not been inducted yet. The Runaways is a prime example. They had NO men in that group.
IconVanity 1 year ago
HarpoSpoke 1 year ago
HarpoSpoke 1 year ago
@HarpoSpoke - again give it time, Heart just might be inducted into the RRHoF. Heart's "mass success" is nice, but, did it influence rock and roll music in any way when they sounded like a female led version of Led Zeppelin? The Runaways have influenced other artists that became successful in their own rights and these groups have expressed it as well of the Runaways' influence on them. L7, The Bangles and The Go-Gos just to name a few. It is not about being first, but impact.
IconVanity 1 year ago
@IconVanity I fully expect Heart to get in. I just expect it take time due to the biases of the voters. Both Anne and Nancy are huge influences on female musicians (having played with female musicians for the past 15 years I know this first-hand).
Anne and Nancy actually explained why Led Zep was such an influence on them in a YouTube vid. ...There weren't any females for them to look up to in that genre. Can you guess the importance of that?
HarpoSpoke 1 year ago
@HarpoSpoke - first off, it is Ann and not Anne. Second off, just because you played with female musicians for the past 15 years, I too have played music with female musicians, but for the past 20+ years, and none have said Heart was the reason they decided to play music, but, have mentioned male musicians and/or the Runaways influenced them to give it a shot.
I've read in (now old) magazines of both Ann and Nancy saying a female artist that influenced them was Joni Mitchell.
IconVanity 1 year ago
(con't)
If you dislike the RRHoF's format and the voters themselves, why do you want Heart to be inducted into such a club that you seem to have no respect for?
IconVanity 1 year ago
@IconVanity Exactly. Joni Mitchell, Aretha Franklin. Notice there was nobody like them to influence them? They had to arrive at the decision "We want to play like Led Zep" without anyone breaking ground before them.
I guess my experience is totally different from yours. The girls I play with worship Heart. I would say second only to Joplin. (The Runaways aren't in the conversation)
Did you just resort to the spelling police tactic? lol...
HarpoSpoke 1 year ago
@IconVanity The entry for Patti Smythe is telling: In 1975, rock and roll caught a glimpse of what lay ahead when Patti Smith released her debut album,Horses. Its inspired garage-band amateurism flew in the face of increasingly slick rock production values.
Horses arrived at a time when rock and roll needed a jolt from its unadventurous rut and upwardly mobile arena-rock pretensions.
See the bias? They hated that the crude sounds of the 60s ended. Can you guess how they view Heart's music?
HarpoSpoke 1 year ago
@HarpoSpoke - I don't know if those are part of the thousands and thousands of committee voters are from the Baby Boomers generation, since the Baby Boomers were from the 50s and not 60s.
Personally, I don't know why it is that important to you for Heart to be inducted into the RRHoF. If they don't, does that mean Ann and Nancy will pack it in? If it is important for the Wilson sisters to be inducted, then, it will mean they are playing music to be awarded some type of medal and nothing more.
IconVanity 1 year ago
@IconVanity The Baby Boomers were mostly teens in the 60s. That's their "era" and they haven't stopped promoting it since. Their large numbers make their voices loud too.
Nothing is "important". It's not important for Heart to be paid for what they do either, but I think they deserve it.
HarpoSpoke 1 year ago
@HarpoSpoke - they, Heart deserve to be in a club that you feel are bias against them and their music (according to you)? Where's the logic in that?
IconVanity 1 year ago
@IconVanity Same exact logic used by those who wish admittance to clubs, colleges, schools, restaurants, and hotels that don't want to let them in due to a bias.
The RRHoF, deserving or not, has been given importance. It is their obligation to live up to that importance by not ignoring deserving artists because they didn't like the 70s mainstream. They actually delayed putting in bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd and Van Halen. We're still waiting on Boston, Heart, Journey, and KISS.
HarpoSpoke 1 year ago
@HarpoSpoke - the point of even bringing up Suzi Quatro was to counter your point to say Heart influenced females to front rock bands and that's one of the reasons they should be in the RRHoF. Name a female fronted rock band that was influenced by Heart, just ONE would do. Suzi Quatro influenced Joan Jett whom was a big part in influencing her to be in a rock band.
Janis Joplin has influenced women to play rock, Melissa Etheridge has mentioned she was influenced by her. Pink also.
IconVanity 1 year ago
(con't)
Both Led Zeppelin and the Beatles had a big impact both for music and pop culture, which is another part of the RRHoF's criteria. Now, what big impact has Heart accomplished in influencing music and pop culture?
IconVanity 1 year ago
@IconVanity So you mention the Beatles and Led Zep and claim less influential acts don't belong? They are going to have to kick out most of the artists enshrined now if that's the case.
HarpoSpoke 1 year ago
And now I am done with you, since, again, all you want to do is rant and whine at me about how bad the RRHoF is treating Heart by not inducting them, thinking I am responsible for creating the criteria in the first place. Go to their website and send them an email if you feel so compassionate about Heart being inducted.
IconVanity 1 year ago
@IconVanity Are you seriously suggesting that Heart hasn't influenced women to play music? (Or that Suzi Quatro was more influential?) Lita Ford has actually expressed her admiration for them. Pat Benatar and Gretchen Wilson must surely count. Do you wonder why Suzi Quatro's "hit" isn't featured in Guitar Hero while Heart is? (I don't wonder at all...it's obvious)
Even better is that Heart has influenced MEN. That's why Alice in Chains jump at the chance to play with them.
HarpoSpoke 1 year ago
This classic version of Heart is so warm sounding if that makes any sense at all. The combination of all them give a signature sound that really stands up well to the test of time.
