Clearly Floyd is more disturbed by the fireplace than the snow. The fireplace, unlike the snow, is inside the house and thus more disturbing. As far as Floyd is concerned, the fireplace has invaded his home whereas the snow at least is kept at bay by the windows of the living room.

I see Floyd as an investigator who inspects each aspect of his surroundings. When one aspect is out of kilter as far as Floyd is concerned, he sounds the alarm. I suspect Floyd is a dog who likes his environment just so. If something is out of place, he disapproves.
