The point of this episode was to demonstrate that the substantially superior technology of the Comet Empire would not sweep the field. Surprise and ingenuity and bravery would, at least initially, blunt the Empire's advantages. Everyone comments on the similarities to WWII battles, but it's also alot like the Confederates defeating the larger Union armies by knowing the territory of the battle.

Wow, I confirm that is like the Midwar battle, where 2 US carriers defeat 4 japanase carriers and a lot of their ships. Very good anime, very studied for make it.
Yes you´r right, but is the same point, the US had inferiror forces after Coral sea battle, but with lucky and planification win the battle, and only lost the carrier Yorktown, and Japan lost 4 carriers; Akagi, Kaga, Hiryu y Soryu.

BTW: check out 3:30 on the time index and doesn't that look an awful-lot like the Cylon Raider flyover in the pilot episode of "Battlestar Galactica" (the 1970's version)? Did BG get that from this show?
