Lots of brainless commentary here. I recommend some more education. Islam is a fabric of Iranian culture since the year 710. You may deny it but maybe you have not been in Iran lately. Los Angeles is not Iran

Everybody wants to be somebody but seldom a person accepts who s/he is. Just be yourself. Religion, race and nationality does not come into it. It just pollutes it and makes it harder to see who you are. Remove all that and underneath all of it, you just a human BEING, so just BE. Now you can add whatever religion to this new BEing and it will work just fine and you can be any race you are.
It is also important to note that the version of Islam practiced in Iran is HEAVILY influenced by Zoroastrianism. I see beliefs and superstitions in my own family that more closely resemble the former than the latter.
I agree with Oblivion. As another Persian who was born Muslim, but it not practicing a one, we do not need to disown the religion, which for better or worse, has played a big part of our history. Nor do we need to play elitist by saying we are not Arabs. What are we trying to say? Don't bomb us because we are white non-muslims? Have some pride or go get some. Iran has plenty of problems but we have nothing to be ashamed of in comparison to recent American history.
Alright... i've read lots of comments saying stuff like 'Islam isnt for persians'etc.
lemme put this straight, you are not impressing ANYONE by saying that. I'm a Persian but not a muslim.. thats cos im entitled to my own opinion, as is everyone else. If a Persian decides to be a Muslim... its their choice. they're not harming anyone.
Religion can teach you lots, and its nice to have something to believe in as long as you dont take it to extremism.

The reason why iranians say they are not muslim and feel proud about it is because they are proud of being free of saying it. Iranians are always seen as arab in western eyes, which makes many iranians angry, because, they find arabian culture wild and suppressing and fundamentalist. Therefore, it shocks a lot of westerns when an iranian says im not muslim. You have to see it in a cultural way cuz thats were people and different ethnic groups are different from each other.
islam is for arabs and those ho want be muslim not persians, general muhamad was a arab invider of persia and our persian culture islam is for those ho had no culture before islam long live iran.and the zoroatrian faith,go and pray against the stone of mecka arabs and arab lovers Mullahs of iran, perisan shose betwen light and darknes islam or zoroastrian too be noble aryan or you no the rest wath islam stands for,Ashu Zaratustra we have not forgot Noruz immortals are with us
