Right, the fault was probably the same as the fault in the consoles the temperature goes to high, to be fair, well done, but if anyone reading this, remember to use flux, it is very important, and then use a good thermal paste, try mx-4 inexpensive and works a treat.
I just repaired a 17" MBP i bought for $200 because it was "unrepairable"n using this technique w/ slight variation.. incandescent desk light positioned a half inch from nvidia chip. Works perfectly now!! THANKS!
It was fun to fix a mac. Hope it will last. i'v seen from the comments that some lasted like 3 months. i added a fan speed control program to boost the fans a bit. so hope it lasts longer. thanx ! cheers !
That Fan Control is a good idea, you could try SMC Fan Control if it's an older MacBook Pro (not sure if they have any newer versions out). Try running the fans on Full (or as high as you can stand for the noise), just to avoid high temperatures.
Just bought a broken Macbook Pro model 1226 on eBay. Bought it for parts to fix my daughter's Mac. Turned out to have the black screen video problem. No screen output, no dvi output. I found this and several other "cooking" videos and decided to give it a try with your selected method.
Five minutes under the heat gun... probably 400 - 500 degrees F!!! That sucker was hot! Put it back together and HOLY CRAP!!! YES IT WORKED!!!
Thank for the post! Fingers crossed that it lasts! Ross
Well done! I did something like that but without a heat gun (see my video). :)
Unfortunately it kept working for less than two months (of full time work). After that I repeated the procedure once, it started working again for a few days, then the same problem again, so I gave up. The first time is fun, the second is a chore, please not a third time!
I did this after I saw ya video, i didnt do all the steps though, I heated up the graphics chip for a min or two and let it cool off, reinstalled and working great...only now my fans run on high rpm now while its on for some reason..weird..but ill see whats up with that
hahah great video, music was on point! My mbp just started doing this 2days ago! ill probably attempt this over the weekend as Ill have allday to mess with it. Is it still working?
I dropped my macbook. Now just the chime & blank, white screen. Doesn't work w/ external monitor either. Could something in the logic board have broken loose?
just tried this with a 1000w heat gun think i fried my chip i heated for 10 mins... after doing this to my machine i then looked at the xbox 360 ring of death vids they do a similar thing but for 30 seconds lol my macbook wont start up at all now whoops! no light on the front .

Hey I just did this to my macbook too...thanks for that...seems to be working great...but My Isight camera isn't being recoginzed now.. neway... Just wondering if yours is still running properly or not...if not...how long did it take before it went screwy again.. again Cheers...so far you saved me 700 euros to replace the Logic board... well technically 680... I had to buy a heat gun lol
@OddmanOutcy Great to hear it worked for you too! As for the iSight, maybe it's connection wasn't reattached fully after you did the work (not sure how it attaches, just a though).
The computer lasted 3 months of normal use until it happened again, but I did not do a good enough job of keeping the heat down, so naturally it sort of "de-flowed" itself and the same problem happened again.
I had exactly the same problems with my old macbook pro (2.16 Intel Core Duo). I also went out to get a new one and then tried to repair the old one using exactly the same technique... and wham, it bursted back to life!
Funny thing is, when I fired it up it for the first time it also booted to a black screen with no dong, only when I put in the aftermarket RAM in the top slot it booted - exactly the same.
You're supposed to heat the whole board besides plastic pieces to make sure it expands and contracts the wires evenly... I'm sure you noticed the board was melted so you're lucky didn't mess it up worse... not to mention not grounding yourself... but what do I know... I just fix computers for a living
I found your video after I went to a xbox 360 repair store where the guy told me he can fix my macbook using reflow. I had never heard of the term so I looked it up and found your video. Now that I see it's possible, I might take it in because right now in it's state it's out of warranty and pretty much useless. Thanks a bunch. Any other info available out this type of logicboard repair?
Dude i love you (not fagottry, just love from another macookpro 15 user with the same issue) this is so amazing, less than 20 bucks and some free time can go a long way.
apple tech support was obviously wrong, they jsut wanted to get more 4 from you, it was jsut overheating, then you rigged some better cooling and shabam!
Great video. I have done this for several HPs. Can you tell me, do you know if that Mac is still working? Does it get much use?
