It feeds into this idea that everyone wants to know something the next guy doesn't, or be on some shit someone else isn't. It's elitism on cultural level. Get over yourself. Spread it like butter. - Popularity doesn't erode any art's quality - it's the individual that allows it to erode their interpretations.

@downwiththemaster it really depends on how you define the term 'mainstream'. In it's widest interpretation, 'mainstream' simply means, common or appealing to and/or inclusive of the majority. In which case there's plenty of things 'mainstream' that do not suck - even though that is itself a subjective term. I'm sure you could say Led Zeppelin is 'mainstream', but it doesn't 'suck'. But the point I was making, was that 'becoming mainstream' can not hurt the quality of the art.
