Marty wrote this song from remembering how his mom would sit and drink coffee and smoke after his dad left. Like most of his songs he wrote, so much truth in them....I like the story behind MAN WALKS AMONG US. This great talent could write a heartwarming song just from seeing someone throw a chewing gum wrapper down. He had talent and knew what to do with it.
Marty Robbins wrote this song in 1953. When he sang this song live in this particular recording, he actually changed the words to sync with the way that Lefty had recorded in 1958.
@marge3931 No, it was a heart attack. He had suffered heart problems for many years, but kept right on performing. He finally had to give up racing cars a few years before he died because of his health.
I love this man,for he alway's had fun in performing and singing his songs, normal and in somethimes a funny way.Dear Marty God bless and rest in peace together with your lovely wife Marizona.

I am not sure if it was a heart attack or heart failure. He drove race cars but did not die in an accident.

How's this for a Marty joke?
A guy stops at a grocery store carrying a gas can and asks the old feller behind the counter "How far to the nearest gas station?"
The old man replies "3/4 of a mile as the crow flies."
The guy replies "Well how far would it be if the crow was walking and carrying a gas can?"
