Would you be able to tell me what type of sunflower you harvested from please. They look just the right size for me to grow in a 5 gallon pot!! Peace.
Thanks for taking the time to post this, filming, editing, etc. My teen son fwd'd this to me and is out there now digging a spot for sunflowers come Spring. See how a person can make a difference in others' lives? You can bet he'll have his friends over here during the process. He picked Mammoth sunflower pkg. Thanks again for making it fun. :)
Great video. I love that you ended it with the word "peace". My youth group grew a "peace garden' of Sunflowers this year. And we're using your instructions to harvest the seeds this weekend. We'll enjoy eating them at our upcoming movie night, and maybe sell some to buy meals for famine-ravished East Africa. Peace.
me and my mom watched this last year now she has a job that takes up more time so im doing this my self to have some sunflower seeds without as much rush thank you.
This is the perfect video for the hobbyist with a new batch of flowers who doesn't know what to do with them. I have a patch very similar to yours but I didn't know when thwy'll be ready to harvest. Now I do! Muchas Thanks!
I have a question about one small detail: @T1:10 you say to cut the flower off about a foot down from the flower. I wonder what is the reason for that foot of stem. Is it a matter of convenience or... ???
So happy to have found your video. It was very helpful. My 4 year old planted a sunflower seed last fall and it turned into one HUGE sunflower, we just took the seeds out and have begun the harvesting process. Thanks to your video, I have a clearer picture on how to do it.
hey i have a question um i just grew some sunfolwers and there already harvested and i was wondering if the seeds can expire cause i dont really want to cook them. can they expire?
@mlk030103 - Most all seeds are designed by Nature to last (under the right conditions) for a long time (eg archeologists have found centuries-old seed caches with seeds still viable) and the harvest from 1sunflower can give you many crops.
MOISTURE IS YOUR ENEMY when storing any seeds; you 1st rinse your seeds in water (NO SALT!), pick out the floating bits. Don't soak the seeds, just rinse.
continued - Next, spread your seeds out to dry on paper towels. Don't do ANYthing else until your seeds are completely dry (a couple days out on the porch if it's sunny and windy).
MOISTURE IS YOUR ENEMY.
STORE your seeds in small paper bags (folded down & taped closed) or plain paper envelopes, closed n sealed. Label the envelope with type of seeds and harvest date ("Sunflowers, Summer 2011" is good enuff).
These are all tips I picked up here n there (&YouTube) and pass on gladly.
1:50 This is the best tip i've seen. As a resident of what earthlings refer to as 'the sun', we DON"T have overnights and this is why the all the other videos have failed me. NOW i can get back to my SUNflowers of the SUN. Good day, earthlings !
Are there specific sunflowers for seed eating? My family and I always plant giant sunflowers over our leach field and we probably have at least 30 plants. I have always enjoyed taking the sunflower heads apart and examining them, but this year I would love to roast them,
That was an amazing video! So informative...I want to grow Marigolds, Lilacs, and Sunflowers. And Now I can harvest and eat My seeds too. Thanks So very much.
soaking tonight, baking tomorrow! ...... have you ever tried a flavor? bar-b-q, ranch, jalapeno, etc? just a thought and maybe a recipe. ha ha no..... yum yum!
Thanks for the info! A question for you, how long are the seeds able to be stored after roasting? Would they be more viable for long-term storage if I stopped after the drying out step? Thanks again!

Thank you for the teaching... I am just learning to grow my own food here in Arizona (or should I say Aridzona). Only two sunflower plants survived my first attempt but there are seeds in there! I may try another bunch in our late summer/fall growing season starting right now. wish me luck :) But thank you, you saved me from picking off the heads too early!
@puppylovejewelry I to live in the aridzone in holbrook getting ready to harvest my sunnyseeds my garden is flourishing. i am having a great time with it. what part of the state are you applying you green thumb in? good luck
Excellent video! But please, for all that is holy, don't use soy oil. Cripes. Peanut oil or sunflower oil or any other oil that is not genetically modified. That aspect alone ruins the goodness of sunflower seeds.
did you explain how you got out the extra sunflower parts like the leaves and other extraneous things? (or do you just leave it in and pick them out when you're eating the seeds? Thanks!
Awsome vid, my family grew mammoth sunflowers, the heads are huge, bigger then a basketball in diameter. before i watched this vid i used a knife on 1 of the 4 heads to cut them out "brute way" just what i was looking for for everything else though!
I have a question for you. My 3 year old son planted a sunflower seed in preschool last spring. We planted it outside and it got REAL big. He was so proud of it, and excited to eat the seeds. Well.....we had a HORRIBLE storm come threw and it ripped it right out of the ground. The head is HUGE, but still green and most of the petals have fallen off. Do you happen to have any advice on how to harvest the seeds a little early? Is that even possible? Thanks for any advice! Jen & Connor

Thanks for a very well made video. We grew the most amazing sunflowers this year and are harvesting half for the family and leaving the other half to feed our fine feathered friends before the winter hits! Thanks again!
Nice video about sunflowers thanks! But I have to say...no butter, but you eat soy? Actually butter from healthy grassfed cows is one of the most healthy fats you can eat! and a source of Vitamin K2 I believe which you can't get anywhere else. And Soy, well I can't say there is too much good to say about soy (we've been brainwashed on that one!). Unless it is fermented soy.
Awesome! Thanks so much for posting this. I have about 6 or 7 Giant Russian Sunflowers and the biggest head I have is almost 2 feet across.
