  • I eat stripy seeds without hands, and black ones with hands.

  • when you cut the head off the steem does it grow back???

  • Love your work Sir!

Would you be able to tell me what type of sunflower you harvested from please. They look just the right size for me to grow in a 5 gallon pot!! Peace.

  • Thanks for taking the time to post this, filming, editing, etc. My teen son fwd'd this to me and is out there now digging a spot for sunflowers come Spring. See how a person can make a difference in others' lives? You can bet he'll have his friends over here during the process. He picked Mammoth sunflower pkg. Thanks again for making it fun. :)

  • MAN YOU ROCK!

  • MAN YOU ROCK!!!!

  • This guy make it look easy

  • Hello,

Thanks for the video.. I harvested my sunflowers when they turned brown.. All the seeds are black.. Are they still edible?

  • why do u salt them if u crack them one at a time in ur mouth?

    - i mean u look like u KNOW what ur doing so... why?

  • @CornOnTheCobIIV your question makes no sense...

  • way too much work just buy some

  • I heard that the sunflowers go throught a bee phase of some sort can that be avoided or dose the phase have to happen?

  • Great video. I love that you ended it with the word "peace". My youth group grew a "peace garden' of Sunflowers this year. And we're using your instructions to harvest the seeds this weekend. We'll enjoy eating them at our upcoming movie night, and maybe sell some to buy meals for famine-ravished East Africa. Peace.

  • @MQPsTheEdge hi im an edgy... is this A. R. G.?

  • THUMBS UP IF U KNEW WAT THE TOP COMMENTS WOULD BE ABOUT

  • me and my mom watched this last year now she has a job that takes up more time so im doing this my self to have some sunflower seeds without as much rush thank you.

  • Hello Mike!

This is the perfect video for the hobbyist with a new batch of flowers who doesn't know what to do with them. I have a patch very similar to yours but I didn't know when thwy'll be ready to harvest. Now I do! Muchas Thanks!

I have a question about one small detail: @T 1:10 you say to cut the flower off about a foot down from the flower. I wonder what is the reason for that foot of stem. Is it a matter of convenience or... ???

  • @OhPervyO convenience

  • So happy to have found your video. It was very helpful. My 4 year old planted a sunflower seed last fall and it turned into one HUGE sunflower, we just took the seeds out and have begun the harvesting process. Thanks to your video, I have a clearer picture on how to do it.

  • hey i have a question um i just grew some sunfolwers and there already harvested and i was wondering if the seeds can expire cause i dont really want to cook them. can they expire?

  • @mlk030103 - Most all seeds are designed by Nature to last (under the right conditions) for a long time (eg archeologists have found centuries-old seed caches with seeds still viable) and the harvest from 1sunflower can give you many crops.

MOISTURE IS YOUR ENEMY when storing any seeds; you 1st rinse your seeds in water (NO SALT!), pick out the floating bits. Don't soak the seeds, just rinse.

want to keep your seeds in

  • continued - Next, spread your seeds out to dry on paper towels. Don't do ANYthing else until your seeds are completely dry (a couple days out on the porch if it's sunny and windy).

    MOISTURE IS YOUR ENEMY.

STORE your seeds in small paper bags (folded down & taped closed) or plain paper envelopes, closed n sealed. Label the envelope with type of seeds and harvest date ("Sunflowers, Summer 2011" is good enuff).

These are all tips I picked up here n there (&YouTube) and pass on gladly.

  • 1:50 This is the best tip i've seen. As a resident of what earthlings refer to as 'the sun', we DON"T have overnights and this is why the all the other videos have failed me. NOW i can get back to my SUNflowers of the SUN. Good day, earthlings !

  • Good Evening

Are there specific sunflowers for seed eating? My family and I always plant giant sunflowers over our leach field and we probably have at least 30 plants. I have always enjoyed taking the sunflower heads apart and examining them, but this year I would love to roast them,

  • Wow... you sure love eating them!! xD

Thanks for the video! and how do i eat them raw? just wash them??!?!?

  • That was an amazing video! So informative...I want to grow Marigolds, Lilacs, and Sunflowers. And Now I can harvest and eat My seeds too. Thanks So very much.

  • so i can eat these raw with out preparation?

  • soaking tonight, baking tomorrow! ...... have you ever tried a flavor? bar-b-q, ranch, jalapeno, etc? just a thought and maybe a recipe. ha ha no..... yum yum!

    peace!

    wake-up, stand-up and speak-up!

  • What do you do if you want to re plant some of them?

  • @DirTyOhGee plant them before drying them...

  • @livelife365 Thank you!

  • Thanks for the info! A question for you, how long are the seeds able to be stored after roasting? Would they be more viable for long-term storage if I stopped after the drying out step? Thanks again!

  • @msemmyegg once roasted, i would eat within one week...

  • Can you plant the seeds if they are roasted and salted

  • @MrAwsome919 no, eat only, plant before roasting...

  • Can you eat them raw? Cooking would take some of the goodness out of them, wouldn't it?

  • @myastroflight you sure can...raw eating is always a great way to ingest veggies...

  • is it 300 farenheit or celcius? I've put them on 300 farenheit, which is 150 celcius.

  • @OssastoriumDoDs Fahrenheit...peace

  • The best video on harvesting sunflowers I've seen yet. Thank you so much! I planted mammoth sunflowers and some of them have started facing downward. I didn't know if they were supposed to do that or not. I thought it was because I hadn't been watering them. Thanks again!

  • @lsn2jah thanks for the great comment...peace

  • Great instructional video!! You enlightened my 5 year old twin sons and inspired us to plant next season.

  • @finacegirl alway happy to enlighten twins...peace

  • nice job, those sunflowers were kind of small though

  • ok cute guy now I have to grow some sunflowers :D

  • All those seeds were from one head?

  • very informative, very professionally done video, great "tv" personality lol. I've been putting off dealing with my flowers because I kept getting confused by the info online, but I'm not afraid anymore - delicious snackfood, here I come :)

  • hello. does anyone know to to get mammoth sunflower to full size? mines only go to helf size.

  • @oneonta310

grow in a greenhouse, or outside in full sun both with goood soil

  • great video, mike! i've got about 10 giant sunflowers in my backyard, i'm gonna follow your steps and i'll let you know how it goes - they are not quite ready for harvesting, but it should be any day now..out of curiosity what kind of camera do you use? video looks very professional, great picture and sound. bravo!

  • 4:05 thats not all from one sunflower is it?!?!

  • nice house

  • Very informative and the best guide to doing it at home. Great video. Thanks.

I may try another bunch in our late summer/fall growing season starting right now. wish me luck :) But thank you, you saved me from picking off the heads too early!

  • @FayDarling no, salt to taste

  • Thank you Mike! We grew sunflowers at school with our students this year! I can't wait to show them how to harvest all the lovely seeds :)

  • @zarifadances hope this video helps...peace

  • Excellent video! But please, for all that is holy, don't use soy oil. Cripes. Peanut oil or sunflower oil or any other oil that is not genetically modified. That aspect alone ruins the goodness of sunflower seeds.

    Peace.

  • Gr8 vid!!!

  • did you explain how you got out the extra sunflower parts like the leaves and other extraneous things? (or do you just leave it in and pick them out when you're eating the seeds? Thanks!

  • Awsome vid, my family grew mammoth sunflowers, the heads are huge, bigger then a basketball in diameter. before i watched this vid i used a knife on 1 of the 4 heads to cut them out "brute way" just what i was looking for for everything else though!

  • Thank you.

  • How many seeds would you say you get from a 1 foot diameter head?

  • Im eating seeds as I watch this

  • can u use shampow to dry it

  • Is it good to eat the shell too?

  • Thanks for the video.

  • AWESOME VIDEO!

  • Thank you!

  • Great video! But I have a question that may have been asked already to please forgive me for that. How do you keep the birds from eating your seeds?

  • This is the second year in a row that my seeds never got black stripes. Last year I tried in Sept and this year I waited until Nov. What gives?

  • sunflower seeds make you nuts! and i mean FANTASTIC! i've been eating them everyday for a week! really helped my mojo.

  • if ur super healthy remember use organice varieties, dont boil, use spring water if possible.

  • my mammoth sunflower is growing two extra heads. is that normal? ill try to post some pics on youtube

  • Mike, thanks, quite informative. Any other tips on eating them raw? Cheers, Craig

  • this video is soooo cool, thanks mike

  • HI Mike,

I have a question for you. My 3 year old son planted a sunflower seed in preschool last spring. We planted it outside and it got REAL big. He was so proud of it, and excited to eat the seeds. Well.....we had a HORRIBLE storm come threw and it ripped it right out of the ground. The head is HUGE, but still green and most of the petals have fallen off. Do you happen to have any advice on how to harvest the seeds a little early? Is that even possible? Thanks for any advice! Jen & Connor

  • Awesome video! My daughters and I were eating some sunflower seeds and I decided to look up how they are harvested and roasted...loved this video! Informative and fun - thank you! :)

  • Thanks for a very well made video. We grew the most amazing sunflowers this year and are harvesting half for the family and leaving the other half to feed our fine feathered friends before the winter hits! Thanks again!

  • THANKS...now I know what to do

  • Nice video about sunflowers thanks! But I have to say...no butter, but you eat soy? Actually butter from healthy grassfed cows is one of the most healthy fats you can eat! and a source of Vitamin K2 I believe which you can't get anywhere else. And Soy, well I can't say there is too much good to say about soy (we've been brainwashed on that one!). Unless it is fermented soy.

  • very useful information

  • how do you make them ranch flavored

  • can you show how to make ranch ones

  • Awesome! Thanks so much for posting this. I have about 6 or 7 Giant Russian Sunflowers and the biggest head I have is almost 2 feet across. Some of them are looking a little dead so I got on here to watch some vids. I do have a question though, I plan to eat most of them but I want to save some seeds for planting next year. Is there any certain process for that? Thanks

  • what do sunflowers smell like ?

  • So can you just eat the seeds right from the sunflower if you wanted? Or are you just doing all this for flavor?

  • Sunflowers are my best crop here in the summer, now I know how to prepare them correctly. Awesome video!!!!

  • Hey Mike, great video. i'll seed some sunflowers then i know what i should do next. I just love these greek speciality. ;) Thank you.

  • You're crazy but thats okay 'cause it makes your videos entertaining!

  • Thanks tons for the vid! I got 4 or 5 sunflowers growin' so now I know how to harvest 'em! They aint gonna' be ready to harvest for another month or so though.

  • Hey Mike! Thanks! I'm a kindergarten teacher in Indiana. I used this video today as the summary to our plant unit in which we grew sunflowers. You had 16 five and six year olds captivated for 7:50 minutes. Thanks.

  • @gail309 hey, that's awesome, hope the kids enjoyed it...peace

  • can you keep some seeds for next year plantation and when thx nice video

  • thank you.

  • sweet bro i enjoyed this video

cant wait to havest my own

    peace bro

  • What about other flavors how would i get them?

  • Great video. I can't wait till my sunflowers are ready to be harvested.

Just one question... was it 300 degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit?

    Peace Bro.

  • 300Degrees F.

300 Degrees Celsius, would burn the whole plant. Plus, that would burn your skin too, cook it.

  • omg i love sunflower seeds never knew how to do this going to try it out thanks 5 stars

  • Awesome. Now I know. Good vibe. Going to plant some next spring... Thank you.

  • Great video, I found it very informative. Thank you so much. Looking forward to harvesting my first crop in the coming weeks.

  • Thank you. I am so excited to start harvesting my own seeds!

  • good luck!

  • do they keep living another season/year or do they just produce seeds and die?

  • sunflowers die off and you have to replant them...peace

  • Awesome!

  • cool...

  • My neighbor plants sunflowers every year!
