In my book, Ayaan Hirsi Ali is a lady of impeccable integrity. There is an extreme element that believes an absolutle literal interpretation of the Koran. The Quran does not say that atheists must die, and there is in fact no scholarly Islamic opinion that supports this view. Scholars are the ones Muslims look to to interpret the Quran for them, and you will not find one, I guarantee it, who says atheism is a "crime" punishable by death.
