Thanks for this, guitar tabs can tell you what notes to play, but sometimes it can be much harder because theres no indication of what fingers to be using thanks for the video.
Thanks for the great video, i've been trying to learn this song and this is by far the most accurate and easiest to understand video i've found. Keep up the great work. :)
you've got the timing to this song wrong. It is a really hard song to play and the timing is hard to get the hang of, but i don't think you should be teaching people this because to be frank, it's not very good.
@prodigalson56 This is just light distortion on an amp. Doesn't have to be a pedal. Should be a small white or grey button on your amp near where it says overdrive or gain...
Just want to give out a big thanks on this one. Don't mind the knowitalls who critique this is a great version and more than enough to be getting on with. I love your tutorials don't give it up it's helping a lot. By the way if you know any more Marr stuff please don't be shy.
Hi man! You're great, great gutarist and great song! Can I ask you something? Next month I will buy my first guitar but I don't understand a lot about them. I like the Squier Telecaster but I don't know if is bettere a Strato or a Tele. Which one is better according to you? Are there any difference in the sound?
@20Dezember I am not sure there is a right answer; it all depends which one you like. They will sound different but not so different that it will probably make a difference. I would say go and check them out in a guitar shop but I appreciate that as a new player you might feel a bit uncomfortable with that. Overall, I suggest you go with the one you like the look of. I have a Telecaster and it is superb, but then I have always wanted one and a lot of my favourite guitarists use them. Good luck!
@amw294 Thanks a lot! To be honest I'm also liking the guitar you're playing in this video, but I'm still confused.. Can I ask you how did it cost? Is it cheap or expensive?
@20Dezember The guitar in this vid is a Squire Jagmaster. It cost about £200. It is a nice looking guitar and easy to play although is not great at keeping in tune. I also have an Fender Telecaster which is superb. They cost about £800. I think Squire Tele's of Strat's have pretty good reputations. You could probably pick up a Mexican Fender (Tele or Strat) for about £360. Like all things, depends on how much you want to spend. And what name you want on it. Worth checking some out in a shop.
@amw294 I think I'm not ready to buy a Fender, and then it costs too much. In some weeks I'll go to a guitar shop to check them out. I'm almost sure I'll buy a Squier Tele or I'd like to check a Jagmaster out! But I don't want to spend a lot of money 'cause it will be my first electric one.. Thanks a lot! You've been very helpful!
Mate, i was really unsure with the beggining of this lesson where you just played it straight off the bad but then when you broke it down it was by far the most in-depth lesson i've ever seen. well done man and thank you, i've wanted to learn this song for years and you've helped me!
Thanks for the lesson, man. And don't worry about not having a Rickenbacker, your guitar sounds nice. Besides, I don't know how true it is, but I read somewhere that Johnny Marr used a Fender Telecaster on the recording of "This charming man". Don't know how true it is, but thanks for the lesson.
Thank you so much. Johnny Marr is a genious and it's very hard to play the things he does on The Smiths' records. Please put up more lessons. Woukd love to learn Still Ill and Girl Afraid.
Thank you for posting this. I've been trying to teach myself how to play guitar for months now with the goal of playing this exact song and now I can finally play it. I'm pretty sure I would have given up if it hadn't been for this video.
thanks very much for this video, im 16 and ive been playing about a year, after about 4 guitar lessons (after which my teacher couldnt be arsed to give lessons any more) and from then on ive been attempting to teach myself
anyway this is brilliant work, i dont really care if its note perfect or whatever, just a great way for me to learn one of my favourite bands best songs. anyway thanks very much.
@amw294 Mate, I have tried to work this out for ages, this video was so helpful I wish I could buy you a beer to say Thanks... Keep em' coming ! best wishes from Down-Under!
I have the same guitar, put some new Pups in it and repainted the body and headstock just for some extra eye candy. Seriously love this tutorial! thanks!
I don't much like the Jagmaster, but I DO like your easy going teaching style! I think all Marr fans have their own interpretations as you say. It's NOT helped by the fact that Johnny used to 'detune', capo up etc, to fit Mozzer's vocal range. I tend to leave one guitar tuned up a whole tone for all the stuff off the first Smiths album. Rickenbackers?? A Strat gives all the 'jingle f***ing jangle' (as HE called it in Guitarist) you need! Keep up the tutorials Adam.
Thanks. I must say that I prefer my Tele to play and get a decent Smiths sound from. I understand that This Charming Man was actually recorded on a Tele so that says something I guess.
Neither. It is a Squire Jagmaster. Supposed to be a cross between a Jaguar and Jazzmaster. It is OK but tends to go out of tune quickly. Not as good as my Tele but it is fairly easy to play and I quite like the look of it.
Thanks for your patient and meticulous approach to teaching this challenging song. Don't listen to negative people. It takes emotional intelligence to give feedback in a way that's helpful and your detractors don't manage to pull this off, so don't listen to them. Keep up the good work and thanks for the help.
thank you sir! i kinda got it now.. = )
