  • Your books are amazing and you're really funny.i love watching your videos and it's funny that you're doing this teaching us how to write grammatically correct and by the way I think it's safe to say I already knew the unicorn flashed its horn :D see what I did there

  • :D You're my fifth grade teacher! Lol

  • What is the deal with the unicorn????

  • now you have me scared of ever commenting for fear you're looking out for grammar errors.

  • Schools are failing somewhere along the line...

  • I'm sure you know this, but "affect" can be a noun (usually used in a psychological sense) as in "flat affect" and "effect" can be a verb meaning "to bring about."

  • we should spread this to everyone on the internet XD

  • Wish I could be at DragonCon. Sounds like a lot of fun. Don't forget to wave and scream like a little girl when you see Nathan Fillion or Wil Wheaton! :)

  • oh my god I was typing that comment and my eyes were figuratively burning this is such an awful way to write.

  • Thanks Jackson, your awesome. You're video is funny and its really useful too. It really effected me and I'm sure it will have a positive affect on my grammar, as you can see!!!

  • But effect can be a noun too... but only when it produces something new. Affect makes a change to something pre-existing, effect brings in something that wasn’t there before. But you know what word you forgot to include? ‘literally.’

"His head literally exploded he was so angry."

    Really? Gross. And sad.

  • @lliamm Oh, there's a whole video on that. youtube.com/watch?v=P4s17CKoRZc

  • @JacksonAPearce Of course, how could I forget? I remember watching it and wanting to send it to everyone on the internet. Literally. But alas, I do not know most of them.

  • @lliamm

And didn't she just say that "Effect" is a noun?

Anyway, I'm kind of starting to get scared about making any mistakes in the comments I write ;)

  • @xXKaylieAnnXx Uh...verb. I meant verb. Damn not being able to edit comments.

  • I love you're videos, your so funny! (You cringed. Me too).

  • Forever the Grammer Nazi. I Hail you, Jackson.

  • But then you get into the fact that effect can ALSO be used as a verb but only when something effects a change. This is why the word effectively exists. She effected an effect. I effected a temperature change. Stuff such as that. xD

  • your eyes look positively purple in this video! ^_^

  • affect/effect thing always confuses me! thanks jackson!

  • i <3 your nails! ;D

  • Schoolhouse Rock reference. Can you GET any cooler? I don't think so. But I imagine you will. Somehow.

  • VERB- That's what's happening!

  • This was really informative for someone who isn't an English native speaker!

  • Thanks for the English Lesson...:)...If only I paid attention in english class.

  • So you have a partnership with YouTube now? :D It's about time they notice you!!!

  • Jackson Pearce - Saving the world from improper spelling, one word at a time. . . . .Da-da-da-daaaa-Wwwwwwwaaaaaaaa!!

  • oh, you changed your youtube icon thingy on the top of the page - I like it! idk if it's new 'cus I'm just now noticing it, but nice.

  • love YOUR sweetly nails!

  • Then and than being mixed up is one of my biggest pet peeves too. Oh, and they're, there and their and we're, were and where.... There's a lot of them that annoy me.

  • THANK YOU. I am going to send this to all my idiot friends. Then they'll make fun of me and call me a grammar Nazi.

  • Can you please add 'less' and 'fewer' to any future grammatical correction posts? Too many people use them interchangeably. Thanks btw you were both informative and clear!

  • Thank you for making this video! It makes me angry when I see someone misuse these words. I do not know why they don't teach this directly in schools. They should just use this video.

  • Sigh, if only I lived closer. I'm in Memphis, and while that's further than Baltimore was to my hometown, I still think, "Oh! Tennessee! Georgia! How close!" and then am saddened because I am a college student without a car.

  • I remember having trouble with than and then. I see the misuse of your and you are all the time. It really annoys me

  • Comment removed

  • Or "definitely." People CANNOT spell "definitely." I can't tell you how many times I either screamed or laughed when I've read something on the almighty Interwebs when I see:

    "I defiantly agree."

    ...

    Sorry, what?

  • Aw, I specifically mixed up the use of your and you're in my first comment, and NO-ONE called me out on it

  • Purchased "Sweetly" for my Kindle last night. Only so far as their vehicle breaking down--I'm trying to savor it instead of devouring it all at once. Thanks for sharing your stories!

  • i like YOUR video.

  • And to think you've only scratched the surface of effect vs. affect b/c both can be used in the opposite way as well (e.g., "Her affect was sullen" or "He was able to effect change in that situation.") :D

  • Great video Jackson ; D It had a positive affect on me and it seems, many other people; in effect, you're helping people learn grammar. Your videos are always entertaining; it's a great way to start the day. : D Also, I should to go feed my unicorn its breakfast now.

  • I guess I don't read comments, I assumed that all your viewers would be grammar nazis and never get anything wrong. Just me? Can't be! :3

  • So I've been thinking world, you need to stop using "alright". "Alright" isn't like "already" or "altogether", it's not a real word! I see it all the time in fiction and just... ugh, barf time. It's extremely tacky and does a disservice to an authors narrative integrity.

  • @HC90125 Yes, unless what you mean is that the monkey completed the action of throwing and that this action had the quality of banana.

  • People confuse it's and its because possessive is generally denoted with an apostrophe.

"Its" is possessive in exactly the same way "hers" is possessive. No one ever misspells "hers."

  • John Green would hate this vid; too many unicorns

  • Next should be the use of commas, apostrophes, and the never-interchangeable semi-colon versus the colon.

  • At first I heard "The dog ate its poo."

  • My high school English teachers never knew that "its" existed. Made me feel that they were unqualified to be grading my work if I knew more about the language than they did.

  • You're awesome! :)

  • The affect/effect thing really helped me, because I'm REALLY bad at remembering which is which and when to use them.

  • These mistakes drive me CRAZY! You've really only scratched the surface with these misused words, but yeah, these are probably the most common ones. Also, a friend of mine always writes "alot" instead of "a lot" and that space between the 'a' and the 'l' really makes the difference between a real word and a commonly misspelt word. :/ I don't even know when I became so pedantic about spelling and grammar, but I'll never get sick of these kinds of videos/posts.

  • You went to DragonCon?! I'm jealous!

  • You're = ure

    Your = ur

  • Thank you!

  • love the nail polish!

  • i love staring at your bookcase! The books on there are a dream! (Except for the twilight saga....yuck! SISTER'S RED FOR THE WIN!)

  • What about there, their, and they're?

I saw a unicorn over there!

They're going to attempt to ride the unicorn.

My friends have lost their tickets.

  • @Ransomed09 OH NO! They lost their tickets to the unicorn? :(

  • @JacksonAPearce lol I don't even know what to say. I just keep sitting here and giggling. XD

  • Lol I think English can be a lot easier when you learn it as a second language. And I mean actually learn, not just somehow make your way through three years of it in High School. Still, I find those three mistakes that seem to be so common very funny :)

  • It's very upsetting when I hear my teacher explaining this EVERY year to people (and this is an honors class) because we should have known this before we went to middle school or high school. I'm hoping I don't have to hear the word explanation in english class again. =_=

  • affect and effect are massive problems for me. But with the others it's not so much I don't know the rules, it's that when I'm typing really fast the wrong ones come out. And I know that is what proof-reading is for but sometimes my brain corrects it for me so I don't see the error on the page.

  • Honestly, Effect and Affect will always confuse me.

The Effect of the words 'effect' and 'affect' being similar will negatively Affect my understanding of which word to use.

I think that sentence is right, but I wouldn't really know... haha. That is one that will always confuse me.

  • this frustrates me too.

  • Super tired? Let's give grammar lessons. :)

  • Yay, Decatur!

  • The differences in those words are INCONCEIVABLE!!

  • I am self-admittedly VERY bad when it comes to effect/affect. Very bad. It's like the word you can somehow never spell correctly... I will enjoy the challenge of trying to keep them straight and I will refer to this video to help myself. :)

  • I become such a grammar nazi when it comes to affect and effect.

  • I have a book signing tomorrow lol I should be sleeping.

I'll be signing copies of my novel "Hillserpent Academy" & I am scared because this is my second book event lol NERVOUS! great video! good luck tomorrow. - R.D.

  • Thank you for this.

Also I LOVE YOUR NAILS!!! What color is that? What brand?? #want

  • Im not quite sure what your getting at in you're video

  • Ah I hate when people use these mistakes... Come on people we learned this in like grade 3 get with it already!
