I was sitting just past the finish line in the grandstands at this race and you could almost feel that car hit the wall. It was a big hit. Everyone likes wrecks, but that was a pretty scary one (no matter who was driving).

If Dale Earnhardt had not died in the 2001 Daytona 500, Jeff Gordon would've died or been seriously hurt in this crash. Earnhardt's death made NASCAR safer, but it's a pity it took his death for NASCAR to go "Hmmm, maybe we should do something about this." Especially since numerous other driver had died before him.

the weird thing about this wreck is that NO CAMERA picked up what he did before he hit the wall... Knowing that he had no brakes going into 1, Jeff turned the car dead left before the corner, getting into the grass and getting the rear up in the air with the nose dragging the ground before he came back up on track and into the wall.

BTW, this race was red flagged right after this to make repairs to the SAFER barrier.
