@zamio1 Super speed because of his shoes explained in Labyrinth, he needs the emeralds and other objects for transformations(werehog excluded) and dark sonic was because he absorbed the negative energy of the fake emeralds from the Metarex ship, "super strength" from force of impact.

Mario however keeps his jumps and super strength(lifting 3 tons) without items so if he got into an itemless fight with Sonic being without his shoes Sonic is done for he can barely jump and has to spindash slowly.

Theres is no such thing as a "better" between these two. At least in power and ability. Mario can jump higher, he can run faster. There strength is about the same. Super Sonic can pwn anyone, but Mario has access to many more power ups. In fighting games, teh game pretty much chooses =P
