Hell yea man, glad to see someone dedicated this to Edgar Broughton. Ill admit, I'm a Youngin, but ya know I can respect music like this. Check out Earthless, 7 For 4, and Blues Creation. Just some random Proggyness I'm into. I'm sure a couple of those bands are from the 70's. Some good stuff.
I saw Stray (famous for their light show) and Edgar Broughton who are still touring with Edgar's son on drums I believe. Not heard of the others. None of the tracks in this list would be my top 10 of the time, but that's all subjective isn't it.
As a fan of the Sensational Alex Harvey Band for the past 36 years, I was thrilled to see Tear Gas featured on this selection. No one can beat Zal Cleminson's guitar work in any way, shape or form! But perhaps you can include Budgie on your next compilation? Many thanks!!
Real nostalgia here. I saw Stray and Edgar Broughton at the Dagenham Roundhouse in the early 70s. Great bands. In those days radio coverage of progressive rock, aside from John Peel's 2-hour long 'Top Gear' radio show on a Sunday afternoon, was virtually zero. Therefore, lots of great bands developed loyal followings through constant gigging, but were never really heard by the masses; eventually passing into obscurity. That's what makes uploads like this so important. Great stuff, thanks.
I'm sorry, but both Rush AND Genesis (in their early days) put out some off the world's GREATEST Prog Rock records ever! (Especially if you're a drummer like myself) I mean, Genesis' "Supper's Ready" with it's time changes (and weird time signatures like 9/8!) and Rush's "2112" & "Farewell to Kings" are masterpieces whether you like them or not!
Salut, mr. DYVELSTEN !!! My deepest appreciation for your exposure of UK 70 rock. Very impressive BANDS !!! Please don´t forget the Mighty GROUNDHOGS with Tony McPhee and QUATERMASSS with John Gustafsson !!! ¿ That music ¿Can it be done again ?
@dyvelsten Thank you sir, i really appreciate you putting this video up. I consider myself a fan of early prog and am always looking for the heavier stuff in the style. Like king Crimson, camel, Van der Graaf generator and such but i have not heard of any of these bands. Thank you for expanding my horizons
If you haven't heard Steel Mill's Green Eyed God album i recommend you do, dunno why the guy who made this video included Get On the Line, but that's a b-side from a single. the album is a heavy prog monster that easily makes my top 10 list of the 70's.
Interesting indeed, apart from May Blitz,E.Broughton, and T2,it sounds a bit dated.
I've still got T2 , Broughton,Man ,and ofcourse the more wellknowned like Spooky Tooth ,Free etc. Stray's "Saturday Morning Pictures",is an alltime favourite.it's just these last years ,with the holy intervention of the NET,that I'm able to catch up with bands that were unknown to me then, or ones I didn't had the money to stock up on.Like ubscure 60's'freakbeat' and psychedelia. So much surprises still to be had.
thanks for making this list & post. everyone would make a different one but yours is great. and I understand that it's as much your personal faves as it is what you might think are the 'best'. I don't know what anybody else is complaining about - they should instead just go make their own posts. I knew 9 out of 10 of these bands so to me your list is logical and does contain pretty much 'the best' though I'd substitute a few. but these are UNDERGROUND, HEAVY, PROGRESSIVE. not PROG or SYMPHONIC.
great list, I would have added Atomic Rooster & Uriah Heep though, and placed May Blitz higher. Also, this list could not be complete without Budgie. (unless u don't consider them underground). If u ever do an American list, u MUST place Captain Beyond at least in the top 3 and Iron Butterfly in the top 5.
With the exception of the Edgar Broughton band I've never heard of any of these before. I like the music, but these bands are by no means the best prog rock bands of the 70's. Yes they are underground bands, but you labled this as the top 10 prog bands, not the top 10 underground prog bands.
@dyvelsten Certainly not these...I'm sure everyone that came onto this video was expecting King Crimson, Yes, Genesis, ELP, Van Der Graaf Generator, etc. Those are the greatest prog bands of the seventies, and they were more progressive than these acts. Stoogemaniac is right, those acts make these ones look very unprogressive.
@6FeetOfDirt My point is that at the end of the video you even mentioned that there were other bands that would be expected but you were going with the underground acts. Top 10 prog acts and top 10 underground prog acts are 2 separate lists. In most cases these acts would have been underground for a reason...because the music they were producing did not stand up to their peers in prog rock, if that's the genre they were attempting to gain recognition in.
@6FeetOfDirt Not to get at your music taste or anything, I have to admit I'm going to look into these bands now, but I felt the way you titled the video and then mentioned at the end that they were all underground bands because the other prog bands could be found all over youtube was a bit self-refuting.
@6FeetOfDirt I understand your disappointment about not to hear the more famous prog acts on the list and I certainly se your point, but these are my favourite heavy prog records from that period, even if they turned out very underground and unpolished for the more mellow progsters, its all just a matter of taste at last, but I will consider to include the word “underground” the title to avoid more confusion.
@dyvelsten It wasn't even a complaint I was making in terms of music taste, I liked what I heard here and thought it was interesting, and I appreciate that everyone has their own tastes regardless. I merely thought it was a bit self-contradicting that at the end you mentioned that these were your perception of the best "underground" prog bands, and said that the big names were all over youtube anyway...or maybe that's just my perception of the words at the end. Good video anyway. :)
@6FeetOfDirt ...i agree there are many others that could have been in, savoy brown, for example, and yeah id heard of exactly half of these only, but im surprised u dont know stray 6feet. started around 1966 and still going now, i saw them just about a month ago in bridgenorth shropshire. the have supported many big names, led zep, pink floyd etc, groundhogs etc, and the played isle of wight fest in 1970 alongside hendrix, free, fairport etc...
All these bands are amazing. When dyvelsten said 'top 10 bands', he didn't mean the most successful prog bands from the 70's. He meant his FAVORITE prog bands from the 70's. There's bands that i would have liked to see on this list, but that's not the point? what an amazing collection of songs. thanks dyvelsten
but that's the point. dyvelsten is trying to show some new music to people like you. the fact that you've not heard these bands before, does not mean that they're not good enough to be in his top 10 prog bands. it's not about record sales in this collection. i love every single one of these bands. thanks dyvelsten.
@6FeetOfDirt I have to agree with you. The album credits listed keyboards on almost all of these albums, but I did not hear keys on one of these tracks, nor many odd time signatures . Funny that Hawkwind was nowhere on this list, though they are more Space-rock than heavy prog. Most of the stuff here sounds like Sabbath, and Sabbath definitely would not be considered prog.
Very interesting post dyvelsten. I liked the It'll All Work Out in Boomland song best, it sounds like the Yardbirds meeting Paul Revere and the Raiders.
@nuno22467 - what is prog rock? - these are progressive bands - they're from the late 60s and early 70s when the word 'progressive' was rightly used - it's never been rightly used since 1973 because music changed then and it was never really as 'progressive' again.
In the '70's I was always looking for bands like this, but I missed these somehow--except for Edgar Broughton. Their records just didn't reach the small town I grew up in, I guess.
@stoogemaniac You don't know what you're talking about!, Andromeda, Stonehouse, T.2, Steel Mill etc was progressive rock groups, heavy! of course but still within the progressive rock genre.
Great comp - like flicking thru my record collection!....also love the sadly forgotten Hokus Poke and Dog Feet for some wicked twin leads....anyone who likes this stuff pls check out a book I've co-authored THE GALACTIC RAMBLE (there is a website).
Cool. Are these all your LP's pictured? I see you have an original Leaf Hound. I think the Overture to Den of Iniquity by Norman and his pals is probably the best sounding item of it's genré.
if anyone is interested the Leaf Hound album Growers of mushroom was reissued as a CD in 2005 with bonus tracks on the Repertoire lable.should not be to hard to find.

If anyone is interested, the Leaf Hound album Growers of mushroom was released on CD in 2005 0n the Repertoire lable with bonus tracks.shouldn't be to hard to find.
Even if you made a top 100 prog rock bands there will still be a stack of stuff that misses out. This is a great list but is still only one persons opinion and not everyone is going to agree. I'll add my 2 cents.....Beggars Opera should have got a mention.
If you want to know more about this kind of thing check out the book Galactic Ramble (I am a co-author), the most exhaustive study of British Rock Music - there is a website too.
They had played with a few lesser known Canadian bands between 1965-68 around the Victoria British Columbia (Canada) area between those years before moving to England where they were asked to join May Blitz...a band that had already been a fully functioning unit (prior to their debut album) before their arrival.
May Blitz were from the UK. They were formed by Tony Newman who had played drums with The Jeff Beck Group prior. Reid Hudson (bass) and Jamie Black (guitars) were Canadian.
@captainbeyond51 May Blitz was a UK based band, whose guitarist and bassist were from canada...they both went to UK to form May Blitz in 69 there with a british drummer, and then play the UK scene (not in canada) so they were a UK based band made of 2 canadians and one brit.
I agree with you, but you know, the lack of space forced me to skip some monsters that deserve to be remembered, Head Machine was absolutely one of them.
PLEASE go to my favs and click on SUBURBAN GUY ROCKIN OUT
he doesnt read music, really feels what he plays and improvises his songs as he goes along. the other 2 favs are him also ARIEL (awesome shredding) and ARIEL SIMANTOV (awesome sweeping) pls view comment and rate them as we think he deserves recognition .thanks everyone!
Necromandus,Black Sabbath,Deep Purple,Atomic Rooster,Uriah Heep and Fields should have been on that list, unless you only went for underground bands...
yeah he only went for more obscure...everyone knows the biggies already...you gotta go deeper than them to find more stuff like that after you run out of new old music like this
usually this bands are underrated , on mexico in the chopo tinaguis the fellas like progresive just knew king crimson, or italian band premiata , but this stuff is great , thanks for done it small tribute
Once again, Killer collection. Mostly new to me. ELP, Sabbath, Purple, Heep Wishbone Ash, Yes, Rush etc. This shit is a new chapter! Now the search is on!
Rumplestiltskin sure was a heavyweight...of course a lot of British bands just simply had to be on Vertigo's 6360/VO series swirl label or Harvest's SKAO/SHVL series
Sorry, I can see now how the wording of my comment is misleading. I did see the album cover and in fact I have got that LP. What I was trying to convey was that there was much more to them than is evident on the LP. I was lucky enough to see these guys many times playing live. Check out my tribute to Snowy posting of Topaz from that LP.
Are you kidding me?! Not only are you asking the guy where to look for them and at what store? That's like trying to get a recipe from a(GOOD) Italian chef!!! It's just not that easy. You're LUCKY he showed the cover of the Lp. You need more record-collecting years under you belt! Good Luck.
Another point of view is to reflect upon whether you know somebody who has been living with a baseball bat up the ass throughout life - or would be willing to try.
Could you include the song titles in the video description? I really like a lot of them and it would make them easier to find. I've just gone through a half a dozen Edgar Broughton Band songs trying to find that one. xD
ahh, as you can imagine I had the choice of making an explosive expression of my delight at finding some prog new to me online, or making an informed and knowledgeable discussive comment, so I chose the former. Was chuffed to hear the Edgar Broughton Band's similarity to Clear Blue Sky, as they're from Warwick, just down the road from me. I'll not even start suggesting alternative pigeon holes for classifying some of these selections, as it's all obscure 70's rock to me - awesome/ unheard!
Nice job! I've heard maybe half these bands and I'm a prog-head. I would differ with you a bit and classify some of this stuff as more straight-ahead heavy rock, but there's nothin' wrong with that.
Another excellent list. Right on! May Blitz and Edgar Broughton Band are all time favorites. Andromeda is amazing too, more psychedelic than progressive, I'd say though (and from '69 too). And topping the list with Leaf Hound!! Outstanding! "Growers of Mushroom" is a forgotten classic. Ever listen to Toad from Switzerland? If not, check 'em out. Keep up the good work, man. Love the lists.
Thanx for the nice comment! I am currently working on a German heavy prog top list, if only Toad would have been from Germany they surely had been there, but as they are from Switzerland its hard to find a fitting list for them, same goes for another one of my absolute favourite band Belgian rockers Irish Coffee...
This video here is only for mad men!!!!!! Thanks buddy!!!

Initially they consisted of Terry Poole (bass, formerly of the UK band Bakerloo), and Keith Baker (drums, formerly of Uriah Heep), and Tony Newman.
I knew Reid Hudson many years ago. His niece is a friend of mine here in Calgary. She hasn't seen or heard form him in years...in fact not many have.
drprogensteinphp 1 year ago
@captainbeyond51
They had played with a few lesser known Canadian bands between 1965-68 around the Victoria British Columbia (Canada) area between those years before moving to England where they were asked to join May Blitz...a band that had already been a fully functioning unit (prior to their debut album) before their arrival.
drprogensteinphp 1 year ago
@captainbeyond51
May Blitz were from the UK. They were formed by Tony Newman who had played drums with The Jeff Beck Group prior. Reid Hudson (bass) and Jamie Black (guitars) were Canadian.
drprogensteinphp 1 year ago
@captainbeyond51 May Blitz was a UK based band, whose guitarist and bassist were from canada...they both went to UK to form May Blitz in 69 there with a british drummer, and then play the UK scene (not in canada) so they were a UK based band made of 2 canadians and one brit.

where's Head Machine?...the Orgasm Lp has some killer tracks on it too.

I agree with you, but you know, the lack of space forced me to skip some monsters that deserve to be remembered, Head Machine was absolutely one of them.

Thanks, this is some great stuff. I've always liked "heavy prog", such as King Crimson's Larks' Tongues in Aspic. :)

I gotta get that Irish Coffee...unfortunately not much groundbreaking prog/psyche stuff in the late 60s early 70s comes from Belgium for some reason
mellotrongirl 2 years ago
Rumplestiltskin sure was a heavyweight...of course a lot of British bands just simply had to be on Vertigo's 6360/VO series swirl label or Harvest's SKAO/SHVL series

Stonehouse, so much potential and talent, never captured on record.
lynington 3 years ago
Did you not see the Lp of Stonehouse in the slide show? I did!!!
saintsaji 2 years ago
Sorry, I can see now how the wording of my comment is misleading. I did see the album cover and in fact I have got that LP. What I was trying to convey was that there was much more to them than is evident on the LP. I was lucky enough to see these guys many times playing live. Check out my tribute to Snowy posting of Topaz from that LP.
lynington 2 years ago
Definately digging hard on the tunes but I'm having to fight the urge to run to the 7-11 and buy a pack of reds. (lament of an ex-smoker)
thorsoni 3 years ago
Very cool stuff! I want these albums, where to look for them d´you reckon? Is there any good store specialized in obscure items?
Casar1973 3 years ago
Are you kidding me?! Not only are you asking the guy where to look for them and at what store? That's like trying to get a recipe from a(GOOD) Italian chef!!! It's just not that easy. You're LUCKY he showed the cover of the Lp. You need more record-collecting years under you belt! Good Luck.
saintsaji 2 years ago
Another point of view is to reflect upon whether you know somebody who has been living with a baseball bat up the ass throughout life - or would be willing to try.
Casar1973 2 years ago
I suggest that you seek some kind of medical attention if you have a baseball bat fetish!
saintsaji 2 years ago
Well, not for myself, I reserve that trait for smart-ass kind of people. Enjoy.

I would rather be a Smart-Ass than a Dumb-Ass!!

Could you include the song titles in the video description? I really like a lot of them and it would make them easier to find. I've just gone through a half a dozen Edgar Broughton Band songs trying to find that one. xD

Done! The Edgar broughton Band song is "Love Gang" from the "Bandages" album.

Fairplay Dyvelsten - there's some great bands here - some that I've never heard before alongside class like Stray and Edgar Broughton Band.
One band that would probably have made number 11 - Horse - their RCA album is a classic.
NeilThompson30 3 years ago
excellent list mate.... such a wonderful taste.... especially with TEAR GAS (my favorite)... keep the good job.... greetings for you....
neshanovcica 3 years ago
ahh, as you can imagine I had the choice of making an explosive expression of my delight at finding some prog new to me online, or making an informed and knowledgeable discussive comment, so I chose the former. Was chuffed to hear the Edgar Broughton Band's similarity to Clear Blue Sky, as they're from Warwick, just down the road from me. I'll not even start suggesting alternative pigeon holes for classifying some of these selections, as it's all obscure 70's rock to me - awesome/ unheard!

marbulius79 3 years ago
Nice job! I've heard maybe half these bands and I'm a prog-head. I would differ with you a bit and classify some of this stuff as more straight-ahead heavy rock, but there's nothin' wrong with that.

jrbaylor 3 years ago
Another excellent list. Right on! May Blitz and Edgar Broughton Band are all time favorites. Andromeda is amazing too, more psychedelic than progressive, I'd say though (and from '69 too). And topping the list with Leaf Hound!! Outstanding! "Growers of Mushroom" is a forgotten classic. Ever listen to Toad from Switzerland? If not, check 'em out. Keep up the good work, man. Love the lists.
rocknrollwerewolf 3 years ago
Thanx for the nice comment! I am currently working on a German heavy prog top list, if only Toad would have been from Germany they surely had been there, but as they are from Switzerland its hard to find a fitting list for them, same goes for another one of my absolute favourite band Belgian rockers Irish Coffee...
