I love this great song as I am of Irish heritage, but my wife always interprets it literally and hates it! She seems to think the silly old woman is quite happy to see her husband, sons and grandsons sacrificed to save her stupid cow paddocks! Then again, my wife's ancestors are Scottish, so what can you really expect? Only kidding, McTavish!
@nietaksky I am English & my favourite singers include Sean Cannon, Luke Kelly. Ronnie Drew Van Morrison. Paul Brady.Sean Keane do you want me to keep going, o/k Planxty, Liam o'Flynn. Andy Irvine Donal Lunny & this song is magic. Don;t lump everyone together.
Makes it VERY hard to be away from the fields, especially when you live in the strangers land. The only person to do it as well as / better than Makem himself.
think a lot of you missed the point of the song. The "fine old woman" is Ireland, the four green fields are Ulster, Munster, Connaught, and Leinster. Children starving was the Great Irish famine of 1845. One of these four green fields is still "in bondage" until this day, Ulster. This song is about Ireland as it was and then as it was when those bastards from across the water came over. ÉIRE ABÚ.
@imsumpup Love your take on the meaning of this song. I just presumed it was wrote from someone who had or knew someone who lost their land/livelyhood to richer land owners and it was taken from the mothers point of view. Didn't realise it was meant to be read between the lines now i'm going to do everyone's heads in who sing this song thinking the same as me lol. Pretty clever lyrics going on then really. Beautifull ballad whatever way you want to look at it.
I cannot believe I found this song! My Mom is from Scotland and used to sing it to me when I was little, I always thought it was so sad. I couldn't remember the lyrics, only the melody and just started typing what I could online from what I remembered..old woman, "five" strong sons, it really brings tears to hear it. I love it. Great Great song and now being 30, it still has that same meaning. I love it and can't wait to share with my kiddos,.
most people are leaving ireland again thanks to idiotic government.im gone 42 years and was thinking of goin back home,as miss the place.this song helps.might just do it y'know this time.great song!!!!!
Jim, this will always be the definitive one for me, beautifully rendered, and fond memories of a time and place way back when we had the privilege of seeing you live.
I've tried to sing this song myself, and although it sounds simple, it is very difficult to get it right and to keep it right for a sustained length. This guy does it brilliantly - listen to that gentle accompaniment to that mellow, warm voice. I've lots to learn from him.
What a song
