I am a beginner in the SCA but eventually I want to go to glave/spear. My question is why do the hold the spear with the front hand down? I would think that it would be more beneficial to have the front hand under the spear so that if they knocked the weapon down hard then it would still be in your hand. The other way seems like every hard hit has the possiblity of knocking it out causing an opening. Could someone explain this for me please.
I always feel like I have better point control because the motion feels more natural with the palm down. There is also better range of motion because when palm-up, the hand cannot turn more to the outside. That is important in close fighting like you see here.
There is a chance of losing to a hard hit, but less with a short spear because the short distance from hand to point allows less leverage than a 9'. With a 9' spear palm up is also better to support the extra weight.
