The multiplication I caught onto very quickly, the division on the other hand took many times of rewatching. If you don't understand the multiplication well, most of you should, the division on the other hand, just start x places over, depending on your number, in this video it was 1088, which is four digits then move one over to three digits then move over how ever many places y is in this video y was 8 so one digit so thats the tens place which is why he said it looks like 10.88 then do what
This was a little fast, I had trouble keeping up. I really want to learn how to use this amazing device, can anyone help my understand it better, I've already wathced the video three times.
I've noticed that most of the comments commending the use of the abacus are well written, using proper spelling, grammar, capitalization, and punctuation, and most of the comments deriding the abacus and instead commending, say, the calculator, are written without as much thought to proper written English. This seems to indicate that people who think highly of thinking think better than those who think of ways to not think!
I've been teaching myself to use an abacus, since I figured it would help to retrain me to do math in my head, which I used to be able to do well, before I stopped taking math classes. I'd still rather just use pencil and paper and do it the way I learned in school. A lot less confusing.
Education should be about teaching others how to USE THEIR MIND not be lazy and use a calculator or iPhone for simjple math that should be done in your head. .Nowadays instead of doing it on paper or elsewhere it is usually done on calculator or cell phone. What can be done on an abacus is amazing, and should be taught. One day graphing calulators and cellphones and computers will fail and one will have to rely on paper, and nobody will know how to do even the most basic math.
It is sad that this is a dying art-form. In america, students are required to use their calulators. I was required to have a graphing calculator in HS and college. there are kids in other countries using this style of computing doing calculations in their head without the use of any device, simply by visualizing an abacus. But we get spoiled with technology. I wish this skill was taught when i was in school. I like technology, but I think we are slowly losing our grip.
dumb, I could multiply/ divide this out faster than trying to learn how to do it on the abacus, and i can plug it into my calculator. sure it requires more critical thinking when u first start learning, but it also can go wrong with simple human error in miss-moving a bead. my opinion, if you haven't been exposed to this before you reached grade 4, don't waste your time.
this is stupid, it requires more work and takes longer than just multiplying/dividing it out, it only seems hard because you have to move the beads by adding.
You're rather fast with the rules and, on dividing, with pointing out what step you're doing where, but on second watch (4th for dividing), I realize how easy it is!
thanks for the video! I love learning from youtube!
However, I found it hard to keep track of the numbers since they only were spoken. A note with the numbers next to the abacus would probably make it easier, at least for me..
too bad for those who's internet browser lags when you rewind the video.

@SmileyTrilobite I completely agree, I got the multiplication on the first watch but division was understandable only after watching this 4 times!!

This is amazing on how quick it is. I would recommend using an abacus to anyone, you can seriously improve your math skills just by using it.
