FWIW, this is the sort of music for which I have kept my vinyl collection of 1,000's of records all these years. There was some incredible jazz and other music being made through the 50's into the 60's. Dave Brubeck, by the way, is still with us. He was born in 1920. Do the math. An amazing musician, whose legacy endures. Now go listen to "Take Five".
Too bad America's youth are being cheated out of their musical heritage. It's a matter of exposure. I'm glad I'm old enough to have had a choice of music I care to listen to,rather than what everyone else listens to,making the false assumption there is nothing else.I guess it's a matter of who brings in the most almighty dollars.Someone recently let his younger brother hear jazz playing, and the ignorant youngster remarked it sounded like elevator and shopping music.Sad,very sad.
@Mrtriumphchopper My family was lucky enough to be raised with many different kinds of music. This was passed on to my nephews who are musicians and love jazz, as well as their own favorite music of their own generation. I don't believe in limiting myself to one genre, but I do believe that jazz is the the one favorite genre I always come back to when I want to sit down to enjoy some great music. It's up to all of us to share and preserve the legacy of this great American art form.
@daleam1 Thank you for your reply. I hope I didn't mean to say one should enjoy jazz to the exclusion of everything else. What ever floats your boat. I meant jazz should be part and parcel of the well-rounded musical curriculum. Many a pop star has cut his/her teeth on jazz and classics, the fundamentals or building blocks of modern western music, and continue this practice. Cream (no pun intended) will always rise to the top---the dregs always toward the bottom.
Joe Morello is absolutely brilliant here, as he is in hundreds of recordings. Thanks for posting this. Dave Brubeck quartet's risk taking and experimentation in 5/4, 7/8, 11/8 etc. worked because of the musicianship of Joe Morello at the kit. RIP Joe.

I love these guys. Morello was a master, alright.
Imagine if, as a kid, you could have hung around these guys? How many lessons would a month of hanging around this band be worth?
They were a class act, IMO.
