id think the only people back then that shunned the steam technology were the people who thought the horse was the best way to get around. last time i checked i couldnt find a turbine at wallmart. now if they were using solar power to run this thing id be impressed, but lpg?cmon,why dont they just go for the world record largest abacus
@PaganWarDrummer sorry i just dont see the point when you can run lpg in a modern car and go faster if your so inclined. imo the Stanley steam car in 1906 was more impressive because they were taking the best technology of the time to the limits...whats next?the fastest hit and miss powered vehicle?
And these guys are trying to best that steam vehicle using only basic steam technology that, today, everyone has access to. It's science, it has nothing to do with efficiency and what's easier. I bet there were people saying it was a stupid thing to do back in 1906 as well, and look what happened.
@PaganWarDrummer The ssc. I hear that their design of the boiler and the engine could have been more efficient. Who knows maybe they'll try it again with a better design and crack 200.
This car broke the land speed record for a steam powered car in 25 August, 2009. 139 mph (measured average over a mile), and next day 238 km/h. You run out of water in under 3 minutes. Yes, it's turbine powered. A piston powered steam car might be better at low speed due to high torque, but there's a cap where the piston can't move any faster due to lack of pressure when the regulator is set at the maximum speed vs force needed to turn the wheels. A special kind of engineering challenge that.
I am guessing that the steam is driving turbines to turn the wheels. It would take really good engineering to make that produce any significant torque. Seems that you would run out of steam very quickly. Wonder what kind of speeds a piston steam engine could produce. Going to research this car more. .

This car did break the land speed steam record maxing out at 139.8 mph.

The 1910 stanley steamer hit like 127 MPH Lul and that was about 100 years befor this car! Way to fail.

They could've done better with a Doble type of set up for a fraction of the cost.

@KenMacMillan, I know... a lot better too. What a silly configuration they used!

it barely goes faster than the 1906 car did...stuuuuuupid.you guys are just wasting money

@philtripe
There's research involved, and they're chasing a dream. How is that a waste of money?
And the 1906 car went over 120 mph, and this thing is only going 95. Stuuuuuuuuupid.

@PaganWarDrummer it eventually did 148.308 mph over two consecutive runs over a measured kilometer.

What is it, the 1906 or the SSC? Either way, it still proves my point.

maybe useful as a steam cleaner but not for braking records

Okey-dokey. There you have it... the Brit's are living "up?" to their beloved motto:
"FORWARD? NEVER! BACKWARD? EVER!"
