I've seen Buddy Rich,(a few years before he died)Ginger Baker, John Bonham and Carl Palmer live just once. Carl Palmer did THE best live drum solo I've ever seen!
I've seen Buddy Rich, Neil Peart (as well as Kansas and A7X) and others in concert. I haven't seen Carl Palmer. I now feel incomplete! I just turned my drumsticks into kindling. :^)
Carl is, with Peter Erskine, Dave Garibaldi and Danny Gottlieb, one of my favorite drummers, but, I think he's the best ever on snare. A drummer like this borns once every 100 years. Pure class. Amen
You see, that's whats fucked, people insist on comparing everybody, every drummer brings something new to the plate and thats what makes music exciting
@J2112gallardo totally agree.persoanl favs are subjective just like the musical content...i suspect that those with the most to say arent very good themselves.except maybe in their dreams..............hehehe.cat amongst the pigeons tut tut ....
This is great. Sad that Carl Palmer's legend has faded over the years with younger drummers. If you talk about Carl with a 18-25yo drummer they will be kinda lost but if you mention John Bonham, they know every note Bonham played! I remember a time when people were lining up to transcribe his solos or "Brain Salad Surgery" or something. He is awesome.
I was at a ELP concert in MPLS. in the mis 90s and Carl did a solo that was so overwhelming that it had people in tears...yes you heard right, in tears. One person in the crowd removed his shirt and wept into it I have seen all the greats over my 50 years but nothing like him...wow. The greatest.
@maachiange: I would rather it were a young, ripe woman with large hooters who removed her shirt. Whether she wept or not, is no concern to me. On the other hand, I would probably have been moved to tears or to grab.
I saw this at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last weekend, where Carl did a special guest appearance. It worked on all levels, wonderfully so: drumming, design, cinema, sound, everything. Please bring it to DVD in American soon!
My first concert was ELP at Cobo Hall in Detroit in 1972. I was 15 years old. This is why I started playing drums. I still find Carl Palmer inspirational to this day. What a talent.
back in the late 70's, i thought that Carl Palmer could do more just on the snare drum than most drummers could do on an entire drum kit. Well, 30+ years later, here is proof that I was correct. ;-)
It's so laughable when you see comments on Youtube saying such things about Palmer saying e.g. 'crap, one of the worst drummers EVER !' etc (maybe not on THIS particular post but check out some of the others). How is THIS man a useless drummer by ANYONE'S standards ? (especially when the negative comments come from no famous wannabes or non -drummers !!)
Just F'in amazing. Any of u older drummers notice the new guys are all about feet and playing fast ? Don't see any of them master a snare the way Palmer, Paice, Bohnam, and Peart do and did. Too busy tryin to play a 1000 mph ! Just my take.
Unreal!!!!!!!!!!!!! There aren't too many people that have played the instrument that play it with THAT FINESS!!!

One snare and two sticks, and he can do more than 95% of drummers out there.
zxcv1234vcxz 1 month ago
@zxcv1234vcxz let's say 99%
Johnwilmot2007 2 weeks ago
@Johnwilmot2007 - When I said 95%, I meant Palmer with a snare and other drummers with a full kit.
If both were using the same gear, then yes, 99%.
