Oh she's SO right. When is this going to change? Nobody seems to be doing anything about this. Prescription drug prices are OUTRAGEOUS! Many people, including myself, can't afford the ones we need to be taking, there fore going without, much of the time..suffering. The cost of a months supply should be the cost for a year supply. Especially drugs that need to be taken all the time, for many months, years, rest of ones life, should be very low costing.

@ladybluluv Generics are always available. These are the branded meds 10 years ago- they have more side effects. You always have a choice, which no one here or the speaker pointed out; take the branded med and pay more, or take the generic and take your pick of side effects- diabetes, weight gain, sexual dysfunction, visual tracers, rash personally, I'd rather take the pill with the least and pay the price and say thank you for letting me do so.

I wonder if her sources take account of patented vs generic drugs. That would have a big impact on disrupting the R&D - Marketing balance.

I mean, patented drugs need a hell of a lot of R&D and I would imagine much less marketing than generics, which cost little to produce but are sold competitively.

@msugda generics are owned by big pharma too, just with a different focus. The issue there is that they only need to have at least 70% the active ingredient as the original despite the fact that they don't need to conduct any testing to show efficacy in any indication; They are allowed to be used anywhere their branded original is approved.

As Marcia said - "compared to what". The problem is simple. The human body is too powerful by nature to respond to drug treatments. The whole medical profession is set up against the fact that all of the standards are estimated on averages, for we have no way to arrive at a normal standard, failing to find in this entire world a normal individual. Aside from that, unlike myself, the majority of the world( including the majority who have written all these posts) are their own worst enemy.

If drug prohibition was ended then this world would be a tremendously better place. The pharmaceutical companies would finally be challenged by the naturally existing medicines which have by and large been banned. There is even a strain of red yeast rice that produces the exact same statin molecule as an "patented pharmaceutical drug. Of course, that strain was banned. Countries where drugs are universally legal have lower abuse rates and vastly less taxpayer spending on drug related issues.

I don't take any medication these days I'm extremely warey of it. I rather I'd know to the best I can, what I'm putting into myself. This is why why have an immune system that creation gave us. My mother has atrial fibrillation and I'm sure the side affects do far worse than good..or should I say..the affects! A relative of mine works as a pharmacist and the stuff he dishes out I seriously WHY?? when they just make a massive profit.

Even though Big Pharma cut back on giving doctors & their staff workers "little" gifts (not just pens or stationary like paper - BUT ALSO cruises, dinners, Broadway tickets, vacations), there are still lots of perks. My friends working in doctors' offices still get theater tickets to Broadway, free expensive steak dinners, flower bouquets, fancy chocolates, free lunches delivered to the office. Nice to get these "little perks" but think of the expense passed on to the consumer.

Why don't you question large pharmacies and their kickbacks for packaging machines, or wholesaler reps and kickbacks they give pharmacies that sign big annual contracts? Meds are the most exposed because of the scrutiny but the smallest part of the problem.

To truly lower the cost of health care the 1st step must be to censure the Drug Companies. By their advertising all they do is over inflate the cost of health care. .

The drug companies own this country, just try to get your congressman or senator to publicly support this issue , HAH! They make too much money to be greedy. This is why I just cannot stand people with power. They don't see the real world. They only see on top of cities in their sky offices AWAY from the rest of the world. If its anybody who needs to be protested greatly against, its these companies. But sometimes, many times, without treatment people would die. Doctors and scientists obviously do help cure people of cancer.

On the whole doctors and their drug companies are just absolutely stealing from us....and one must always remember that doctors are getting paid extremely well for their work and the vast majority of them could care less about us the second we walk out of their offices.

So here's the deal, I figure. Many, many people get cancer without even knowing it, and their bodies are able to fight it and cure themselves. (Not all the time, but many, many times.) Doctors do, however, catch cancer during routine checkups. It's possible that, if left alone, this cancer would beat itself; however, doctors get in there with there chemo and radiation and the patient dies because the tumour wasn't left to fight naturally. Am I making sense? I'm not trying to convince anyone.

There can be individual variations on responses to drugs of the same class.

This is why large, comparative trials looking at both drugs are needed.

The reason why drug companies don't do comparative trials is because they fear the result will be that they are the same (or perhaps theirs would fair worse!!).

Do you even know how much it takes to bring a drug to market??? BILLIONS and 15 years to even get that drug to market, with maybe MAYBE 5 years to recoop that cost before it goes off patent for some generic company to take all the hard work and profit and make a less effective product. And again.... Maybe I mean maybe every 20 drugs tested over years and years will ONE drug ACTUALLY be approved.
