Actually, the lyrics kinda point that she might have died. "It's never enough to stay still and hold you" and there were scenes in there where he had blood on his hands. The long haired girl had blood on her scarf. Also around 2:01-2:03 the long haired girl is holding the short haired girl's necklace. So my guess is that, the long haired and the short haired girl were friends. & Matt possibly threw the necklace to set her free. I can go on but youtube has a limit on how much you have done D:

i actually think the short haired girl isn't dead. i think she's just an ex that he can't get over and when it ended she gave him the necklace back, so he carries it as a reminder of her because he can;t get over her. i think the blood on his hands is a metaphor for him feeling guilty for either the relationship ending or for not getting over her and giving the other girl a chance now. i think if the girl were dead he'd keep the necklace as a sweet reminder and not get rid of it to get over her.

I think the short-haired girl is dead. I think she's a girlfriend he can't get over. The long haired girl wants to be with him but she can't because he's still in this imaginary relationship with the short-haired girl. I think that's why she was sitting in the back seat of the car instead of beside him. And I think that's why the necklace that she's been playing with the whole ride to the beach disappears from her neck when she figures out what he's about to do. He's trying to move on.
