  • "Old movies suck. The special effects are so bad."

    *watches this*

    "...never mind."

  • All that, and he failed to find Tom Baker in there.

  • All that, and he failed to find Tom Baker in there.

  • "No description available."

    Aptly put, YouTube

  • Definitely watching this next time I'm on 3 hits of acid(:

  • LOLNORA.

  • this was playing during the most horrifying and profound mystical experience of my life - lsd induced. I have such immense respect for it now. Really remember the fragility and temporariness of your existence, and this film will show you the eternal.

  • @alliant Nice, man...

  • I undertand it all..yet still havnt figured this scene out at the same time O_O *clpas* amazing job, Mr.Director... :3

  • 5:45 Sacred Geometry

  • @maxleoncini I do not remember seeing that on the DVD. =?

  • When I saw this as a kid I never understood this sequence. Now I can say that Dave is traveling through time and space and he is seeing the wonders of the entire universe

  • The best serie SCIFI

  • Today it would be a lot of teenagers with publicity appeal with poor acting.Stop hunting money and give us some good entertainment, big cinema producers! Underground ideas and forgotten themes will rule the world again someday

  • AMAZING! Producers nowday don't know how to use the audience brain for their message purposes like they did decades before. Imagine a good and intelligente SCY-FY like this nowdays! I mean, with the technology progress of sound and image and 3D and everything!

  • Dave Bowman is about to experience the event that is the ABC Movie of the Week.

  • Отлично! какой трек играет на второй минуте?

  • and it thought star wars looked epic for its time...

  • watch this to Heavy Metal (Takin a Ride) by Don Felder

  • @SlayaSS1 Watch this to Echoes by Pink Floyd.

  • I'm pretty sure this is what the movie Innerspace would have been like if it took place in Mitt Romney's brain instead of Martin Short's ass

  • The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality ... H.P. Lovecraft, "The Call of Cthulhu"

  • Is it really THAT long in the actual movie? If I was watching it in the cinema, I would get bored after the first minute (or sooner) and be all like "GET ON WITH IT!".

  • @ThisIsNotMyRealSelf

At first I was worried when the boys wrote it... but now I'm rather glad!!

  • @ThisIsNotMyRealSelf Yes, it really is this long. However, the entire film is quite slow-paced so you would already have got used to it.

  • The 1st time I ever watched thus film. januaury 1st 2001 it blew me away. Then I read the book, ive never Been the same since

  • @macrobioticman The book sequel Odyssey two is really great as well.

  • Looks like Facebook to me.

  • my god... it's full of stars.

  • I think the Millennium Falcon failed the jump to hyperspace..

  • What's this music ?

  • This is more like DMT imo

  • One word - LSD

  • At the blink of an eye.

  • Amazing how many people claim to be "lost" in figuring out this sequence (and the whole movie, come to think of it).

Doesn't anyone have dreams anymore? What's so puzzling about it?

  • @ikshields Because he fails to explain that Bowman went through the star gate to the Monolith planet where they turned him into a Star Child, which is an immortal sentient being that is now the master of the world.

    Doyouevenread.jpg

  • Forget waterboarding, we should subject Al-Qaida prisoners to watching this movie in order to get them to talk.......I am convinced this movie is a depiction of what hell is like.

  • I had to watch this movie 6 damn times before I fully understand it. And then they invented the internet, which explains it all. Fuck. Reminds me of back when I had to phone the Nintendo Power hotline to get tips for a game rather than just googling it.

  • watch any special relativity simulator and you realize how accurate this sequence is to traveling at the speed of light. I could be wrong, but it seems like 2001 is the first demonstration of a special relativity simulation. Kubrick was well ahead of his time, in a filmic sense and with many other things.

  • @GOreelz im interested in these 'relativity simulations', can you give me a link?

  • @seeriktus /watch?v=IgAII_crHHc

  • This + Pink Floyd = *Jizz's*

  • @RadonX9 Hey -- this, + the Ligeti music it's got, is already the perfect "jizz". (Why paint a mustache on the Mona Lisa?)

  • this is a masterpiece for sure for sure

  • why do i find this so...terryfying.. yet amazing

  • The special effects in this film are quite ahead of their time. This classic film is definitely one of the greatest film ever made no matter how much quality is put into today's movies.

  • Classic. You can't ear all those fucking apples.

  • @ezecskornfan did you just make a pony reference? -___-

  • @crazitaco I certainly hope so.

  • Step 1: Start video

Step 2: Open Skrillex- Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites in another tab

    Step 3: Mute this video

Step 4: Turn off all lights

Step 5: Put this video on fullscreen

Step 6: Stare at for hours

    This will change your life.

  • @JosetheDopeLPs Wow. Just wow. I'm pretty sure Kubrick is turning in his grave.

  • Must be the start-up for Xbox 720

  • IMM... HAVING...A...SEIZURE!!!!!

  • gotta love the classics

  • It seems one of the workers at ILM went fucking insane!

  • Is that the pod at 5:08?

  • Boy, lemme tell ya, I sure do love apples.

  • It's scary but awesome

  • Am I the only one who at the soundtrack of the "monolith" wants to get up and run out of the room? It's like pure chaos... Curious.

  • I seriously threw up at point 6:38 the first time i watched it. it was...terrifying.

  • I've got this need to hum Buck Roger's theme or start singing Lucy in the sky with diamonds.

  • To infinity.... AND BEYOND!!!

  • I would love to see this film in IMAX.

  • Pretty good effects for 1968 haha

  • I think you can feel the same effect in one of those isolation tubes.

  • Why go through all that? Just play Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing.

  • looks like a DMT trip to me.

this is all real. We all have souls. When we die we see something like this.

  • @tehbible "this is all real. We all have souls."

I'm sure you've got good proof to back up these claims. We definitely do produce DMT in our brain though, so do plants and most likely a lot of animals. We'll see something, that's for sure. But you don't have to bring in this spiritual "soul" crap like some 40 year old soccer mom. There's enough greatness in this world and universe that you don't have to make stuff like souls up.

  • @aegisfate117 souls, spirits, our invisible conscious. Its interchangeable. Nothing wrong with being spiritual. Mankind always has been. To not be, is severing your own true self.

The universe is a hologram, based on recent studies by quantum physicists. I'm currently reading Michael Talbot's 'The Holographic Universe.' Compelling read thus far.

  • @tehbible If you notice at around 3:30, it vaguely looks like something out of human reproduction...something like the early formation of an embryo...

  • Comment removed

  • to any experimentalists out there, mute this video, and listen to this in another tab. shut the curtains, turn the lights off, put on headphones and have a nice trip :)

    /watch?v=JOKn33-q4Ao&hd=1

  • ;-)

  • no descripttion available..

    thats what i thought

  • drunk, drugged and fucked by watching this video

  • I want the same sh*t Stanley had

  • I watch this every night before I go to bed...

    I don't get a lot of sleep.

  • @Hematite1000 lol = ), this was pretty cool

  • if we can see the big bang it probably look like that XD !!! or enter inside a black hole if you survive could be like that.

  • what was kubrick on when he made that scene .I want some

  • Is this what happens when a comp named HAL tells you too take a one stress pill and you take 100 of them.

    COOL!!!!

  • I was 5 when I saw this (original theatrical run). I had dreams like this for years!

  • this is why you don't divide by zero

  • YOU FOOLS! YOU'VE MESSED WITH THE NATURAL ORDER!

  • Ok, for those of you saying this movie makes no sense, either watch it again, or read the book. Its quite short. The book explains whats going on in this scene as a sort of intergalactic train system entered by the Monolith, or "Star Gate"

  • @gamermanh But, remember that Arthur C Clarke's "explanations" are coming from the mind of the author who found Kubrick's abstract visual poetry confusing. He was very left-side-of-the-brain, for a guy who you'd think was very imaginative.

When you try to "explain" images like these in some pragmatic way, you almost always come up short.

  • Drugs don't open your mind, they enclose it within itself. Idiots, go take your LSD and go sit on a rocking chair.

  • @VVillowz The combination of this film and DXM was probably one of the most mind opening experiences i've ever had.

  • @Underhill182 Good for you. Next time combine DXM with all the other drugs and you'll be God.

  • @VVillowz sounds like an experience with drugs in the past really left a scar on you.LSD and other psychedelics are non-harmful for the most part.it's danger comes from psychological disturbances.it IS a mind expander though.don't deny the effects of them.

  • @yofera50 Don't deny the effects of them? What is this come cult? I'd rather get "high" by taking a crap and smelled it than sitting in a bathroom on PCP while rocking in front of a mirror.

  • @VVillowz Are you retarded?

  • Comment removed

  • LSD is a hell of a drug

  • And iTunes visualizer was born.

  • Comment removed

  • Not really a thought-provoking film...only in the sense that a hallucinogenic drug is thought-provoking. It's perhaps feeling-provoking, evoking a lot of primal imagery...but in terms of actual intellectual concepts, it doesn't bring much new to the table. It's a film that takes nothing and builds a story around it. Admittedly it's a fantastically-directed if almost totally subliminal story - more for the subconscious than for the thinking mind.

  • @YaleBreaker Have you read the book (aka script that was written for the movie)? This scene describes pretty literally what story the book tells. And the book tells a pretty literal story as well. If you fail to see the symbolism in the movie, just read the book. If you fail to see the meaning of the book, then you're suffering from a mental retardation of sorts.

  • @alexcoe The book has no role in how good or bad the film is. What I'm saying is that the film is a lot heavier on subconscious imagery than conscious, intellectual discussion of concepts. If you fail to see the meaning of my sentence, then you're suffering from a mental retardation of sorts.

  • @YaleBreaker Thought provoking is a pretty vague term. It made me think about alot of stuff, so I would say its definitely thought provoking.

  • @Underhill182 "Is there a God?" There, I just made you think about the biggest question in existence.

  • @YaleBreaker

    The answer is No.

(There, that wasn't such a big question after all, was it?)

  • @ikshields Big answer.

  • @ikshields Pretty big answer.

  • @ikshields Pretty big answer.

  • I watched this last night whilst high and the whole thing was a sort of blur. I don't remember this scene being so long. I was just loving the colors. Stunning film though. Cinematography was mind blowing

  • me and my buds got high, and i recommended that we watch this (muted of course) whilst maggot brain by funkadelic played in another tab......we are changed men. i was tripping out of my mind. i revisited dreams and images i had witnessed as a small child. i highly recommend it for the experience. zomg mind blown!

  • @hyghiaumtym fukn good call broo

  • @omgsephiroth12345 ^_^ took me 2 days to get my mind somewhat straight again hahaha

  • Does anybody like this movie if they aren't stoned while watching it?

  • @stayingup2late2 I do :D

  • @stayingup2late2

Yes, if they're already imaginative, and don't expect movies to be literal-minded all the time.

  • @stayingup2late2 haha I have no idea. This movie is 200x times better high. It's goes at the perfect pace that gives you time to think about and take in what you're seeing. Watching this movie high was truly a life-changing experience for me

  • Their making every movie 3d now. i would definitely would go see this one

  • lots of people commenting still in the second dimension

  • I'm on LSD and this is AMAZING!

  • Can't tell if the people who directed this scene are geniuses....

or were just high when they made this....

  • Amazing to think that this was released before man walked on the moon

  • incrivel !!!

  • This game out last night in finnish television and I started to watch at this point. I was like: ''I have no fucking idea what's going on'' and that feeling lasted to the end of the movie...

  • So crossing dimensions is just like an LSD trip? Good to know.

  • Still one of my favorite scene in cinema history both in sight and sound...........

  • in the last century or two of civilizatio, man creates the most powerful of art. truly amazing. and 20th century music is truly amazing. 21st century music as well. oh my goodness i love postmodernity

  • what an amazsing use of ligeti's atmospheres

  • Step one:mute and pause this video and open new tab.

Step two:Find any 10 minute film of someone rambling on about something(I recommend a Minecraft video, but it's your choice.)

Step three:come back to this video and play.

Enjoy frying your brain with non-sense :D

  • I like to think that this scene is all the different elements (Hydrogen, Oxygen, Metals, non-metals,etc) entering our dimension from an overflow of another, or from being sent here to create another world.

  • This scene right here is a test which shows who is who. This scene can show who is able to read between the lines and understand symbolism as an important part of human nature. This scene is a pioneer and the one and the only best scene of any motion picture including long takes. (Even Kurosawa's films can't compare) If you can watch the whole film and especially this scene without even thinking of having a break or turning it off because you are confused then you have your mind made up right.

  • Wheeeeeee!!!

  • Pure psychedelic journey...Ligeti's music is mesmerizing!

  • Hell...maybe it was not bugdet cuts to NASA that we have not gone back to the moon. If we do, and find a black monolith, then I will sigh...

  • it's.. it's beautiful..

  • What I'd really like to know is how they did this. This was 1968, after all, they didn't have CG-i yet.

  • @DeloreandudeTommy I'm not sure how it works, but it's called slit-scan.

  • fuck acid this is how real men should do it

  • Star Wars is a piece of shit.

  • @egadxxx 2001 and Star Wars are like apples and oranges. Just because they both take place in space doesn't mean they're the same genres, or Lucas was going after Kubrik and Clarke's legacy.

  • @FlubbytheSailor Actually, they are the same genre. It's called science-fiction.

  • this is what it was like the first time i got on /b/...

  • MY GOD it's full of stars!

  • @austinpower14 disinfo

  • When I watched this with my friend, we muted the sound and played deadmau5 to this part of the movie.

  • a woman must be driving

  • I remember I had a hard time watching this movie as a kid, thinking "FUCK THIS SHIT IS BORING, the exorcist was so much better" until this happened...out of nowhere: freaky trip

  • game over

  • che trip!!

  • this is how radiohead makes me feel.

  • Justin Beiber's greatest work in my opinion.

  • @R0773N what, the hell, did you just say?

  • Comment removed

  • Damn! I'm scared. Amazing. Brutal. Im..im...speechless..its shock me..damn..what a ...okay...okay..just relax is just a movie..but..WTF ITS AMAZING !!

  • my god... wtf did i just watch

  • 2:19 hee hee gugga and a hee hee wat tie?

  • What are those octahedron things at 5:42?

  • @0180917 "Them". Ha! Actually, I think there's a description of it in the book...sort of. In the book the monolith at the beginning with the apemen was more active in "teaching". It was described as having such patterns as you see here running across them as a psychological test of primative man's ability to comprehend things not yet understood. If you haven't read the book, then I would suggest it. A warning, though. Like most books, it's not like the movie.

  • a hippie acid trip...............

  • I don't like it when it flashes his freaky looking face D:

  • @DibsWife haha yeah, I think it's sorta interrupt the scene.

  • Bitchin' SFX. Considering this was released in 1968...

  • Jesus Christ over 9 minutes of this? No wonder I forwind through this part since it's just a whole bunch of images. Could this scene drag out any more?

  • @twilightwindwaker You're a fucking moron.

  • Turn your head on a 90˚ angle. The aspect ratio of the video is the monolith. Also notice how all those trippy visuals tilt on a 90˚ angle as well.

  • 5:54 the structure of the vaccum. sacred geometry.

  • Freaking brain washing that's what that is

  • Plus cool music by Ligeti.

  • BEYOND THE INFINITE!

  • OH MY GOD, IT'S FULL OF STARS!!!

  • hope that thing gets good gas mileage

  • I saw this film back in 2002 and i was 16 at the time. I really must say that this movie is the most thought provoking viewing experiences i have ever had. Star wars are good entertainment, but 2001 really gets your brain going and the whole thing just feels like something bigger. It seems though, that this is a case where you either got it, or you didn't. But if this film hits you, man you won't forget about it.For me, this is the most important movie i have ever seen. Amazing special effects

  • Are we there yet?

  • 2001: A Winamp Odyssey.
