Man I love this video of Greg! Greg is going to be my new teacher at the University of Tennesee! I am very excited to start studying with him. He is joining an elite class of jazz professors to at the university: Donald Brown, Jerry Coker, Mark Boling, Rusty Holloway, Vance Thompson, and Keith Brown. Going to be awesome!
Greg Tardy is a bad mofo! Great chops and a deeply spiritual feeling to his playing. How many other tenor players can count Elvin Jones and Rashied Ali as bandmates? Gotta be at least one other out there. Hmmm....
I used to see him play at a tiny bar in Milwaukee called the Jazz Oasis back in the late 80s. He was so patient with a bunch of (underage) high school kids asking him to play a Charlie Parker blues right when he got done playing one. Humble guy too. I wanted to take lessons from him, and he refused, saying that we should just hang out and play. Should've taken him up on that. Keep blowin', Greg!!
I played with him in Brooklyn for a couple of gigs, at the time I was 17, now 19 and he was really encouraging. I enjoyed playing with him and he is great. I play alto by the way.
I took this with a tiny cannon digital camera with a 3 minute time limit and a micro mic - so the sound quality is poor, However the playing is great! I hope Greg comes back to Saint Paul soon. -DB
Greg is devoted cat and it has paid off...a wellspring of creative tenor playing on a high level. Man, I remeber when you were playing on the street at Cafe Dumonde, at Kaldis on Sundays in New Orleans...yeh Greg...youv'e become the man on tenor! Beautiful playing!
hey Greg! How are ya? Kelly Roberti here...hope all is well.
