@dapaoper Yes, I know that. I never said it had to be played that way either. I just found it surprising for a pop-folk singer-songwriter to be using a guitar so uncharacteristic of his genre. I think it's actually cool that he does, but it's not doing much to his advantage over a typical acoustic.

Nothing against him, it's great music, but he really misuses that guitar. Who plays a National dobro standard tuned and without a slide?

@johnniedig The dobro was originally just a substitute for the regular acoustic guitar, the metallic body amplifying the sound, making it louder.

Nowhere is stated that it's supposed to be played with a slide or in a different tuning (he actually plays in a different tuning, notice the capo on the 4th fret, but I get your point). The fact that it's mostly associated with these is that nowadays almost only blues-musicians play dobro, and blues is more often played in different tuning/with slides.
