BTW. His real name was Calvert DeForest - which was way too cool sounding for such a pitiable, sweet character. Enter Larry "Bud" Melman.

@damagecontrol Dude. You know "Bud" was a character, right? He wasn't a "real guy", he was a comedian putting on an act. I was fooled too. I still remember feeling sorry for him when he appeared to realize for the first time that he was the butt of jokes on the show. He kept saying, "Ha. ha. ha. That was a good one on me." He gets major points for being a good actor, that's for sure.

....the "cool people" from high school and college were at home, while the REAL cool people werwe getiung their 15 minutes of fame, over and over again, courtesy of Dave... LBM and the other "real" dudes on Letterman (his crew that reads Oprah transcripts, Biff Henderson) - I think Dave loved these people, he was not exploiting them... he felt America NEEDED to see them, to laugh with them, to learn from them... yeah!

If Dave was the mastermind of acquiring or at lerast approving and suggesting the recruitment of cats such as LBM - then Dave is a minor genius... to Dave (I hope and believe) they were NOT uncool "geeks" we could all laugh at...
