You should ALWAYS grease joints. If you grease the outside it is alright. As you can see, I didn't put a lump of petroleum jelly inside... so it is not contaminated.
As long as the liquid doesn't touch the jelly, you are good. Also, petroleum jelly is non-newtonian chances are it is too jellyish to bond in a liquid.

You can get sep funnels.... anywhere! They are quite pricy though. Try a company called Avogadro's lab. I know they have some.
