there's a reason why Chuck Norris doesn't make this ad's, he knows he will get embarrased for the first time in his life, and he kicks the guys of production
Okay. What the hell is the problem with the Japanese? Why they can't just make a normal ad? Why do they love distorted faces, loud noises, and illogical reactions? Like small kids, basically.
Watch any "normal" Japanese ad based around Japanese actors/actresses. None of them plumb the depths of absurdity the way the ads centered around western celebs do. For a couple mil for doing a 30 second spot, the western celebs would allow themselves to be exploited to do nutty crap for the payday...as long as no one outside of Japan found out about it. Now YouTube is here and the gaijin celebs are staying away.
If they are so able to "laugh at themselves", then why do they *not* want the commercials shown outside of Japan? Because they come off looking like prostitutes.
Now that YouTube is here, western celebs are more reticent about doing these spots.
It's more then likely the companies or the agents of these celebs do not want to have them seen outside Japan. Celebs are bound by the agency's that sign them.
If it was the companies, then they would have made a claim here or against Japander, the site that documents these commercials.
And it wasn't the agents of Leonardo DiCaprio or Meg Ryan threatening the Japander webmaster with legal action if he continued to make the commercials available for viewing to people outside Japan. It was the actors themselves.
I highly doubt busy celebs have to time to go after small websites. There's other, more inflammatory sites they could go after. Besides, just because of a few poor sports, doesn't mean other celebs care.
The point of ads is to sell things--to get you to remember them. Say what you want about the ad, but it's certainly memorable and I'll remember the name Pachinko even if I have no idea what the Hell it is.
The people that the ad targets were going to go to pachinko whether Nicolas Cage told them to or not. It, along with MahJongg, is a gambling addiction that has run unchecked here in Japan for decades.
Japanese commerical producers love throwing inordinate amounts of money to see actors with "dignity" bend to their will. Watch the canned coffee commercials with Tommy Lee Jones or Leonardo DiCaprio hamming it up in a credit card commercial. Japanese commercials that use western celebs seem not to be about selling things, but about seeing that an actor/actress can "sell out".
This was back before viral video when celebs weren't afraid to make a total ass of themselves and guys like Dicaprio and Meg Ryan would threaten to sue websites that showed them outside of Japan.
that is so freaking awesome. can you imagine how much money he must be getting for these 30 second ads? probably a single days work for $5million or something.
That really doesn't matter anymore, seeing how via the Internet and more importantly YouTube, a celebrity can be exposed doing anything anywhere. That's probably one of the reasons why Hollywood celebs are hardly seen in Japanese commercials anymore (and the sagging economy). The cheesy commercials they participate in out of avarice will be here for the world to see in MINUTES of its debut.
lol, not really, look at Brad Pitt and Cameron Diaz doind commercials for Softbank, or Tommy Lee Jones making a whole series of commercials for Boss Coffee playing an alien spy on Earth, you don't know much about Japan, do you? Anyway, what I said is the truth as reported on CNN, etc. Hollywood agencies want their stars to maintain a certain image in the U.S., that's why they can only do such commercails in foreign countries, were the majority of Americans will never see it, even with youtube
Notice that they don't say a word in the commercials you mentioned. Before YouTube, celebs would ham it up a lot. You couldn't stop Brad Pitt from talking on the Edwin commercials before viral video. Gone are the days where Arnie and Nicolas would act like a court jester out of avarice. Now it is in these guys' best interest to keep their mouths shut. Also, notice in Orlando Bloom's 3 minute commercial, he doesn't say a blessed word.
uhhh...Tommy Lee Jones has had more than a few lines in his series of commercials, all in bad Japanese. I think him dressing up in various outfits speaks volumes over what you're arguing.
Uhh...him dressing like a store clerk or in a smart suit or in a yukata at an onsen is not hamming it up. In fact, his entire coffee commercial series he says 3 or 4 words and sings a couple of words from an enka song. Finished. watch?v=au-2mFi1SaE
In fact, the series itself has the undertone that these subcultures are silly and he "deserves better" than this. If this was 5 years ago, he'd be totally milking it like all the celebs here once were.
Also, I like how you went to Tommy Lee Jones trying to prove me wrong and totally forgot about your previous examples I disproved as if a few words across 12 commercials proves that there has been no paradigm shift in Hollywood talent's approach to the Japanese CM circuit.
Pachinko (パチンコ, Pachinko?) is a Japanese gaming device used for amusement and prizes and is related to pinball machines. Although originally strictly mechanical, modern pachinko machines are a cross between a pinball machine and a video slot machine.
any since gambling is frowned upon...... they dont play for money. they play for the beads or ball barrings. Then they take the ball barrings and trade them for cash at another store.

@Kinkoyaburi By "normal ad", you are referring to ads from countries other than Japan? Or ads from the culture you belong to?

By any standard the Japanese ads are not normal. They are weird. That's why they are uploaded here. As hilarious monuments of insanity.
