  • Great Video!!! Submissions 101 rules... let me know how can I support your proyect...

  • "kneading the dough" very nice

    thx

  • im probably going to start bjj in a few weeks with some mates.

Scotts videos are very discriptive and helpfull, good work

  • Scott -- really great little techniques in there. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I have a question. I see that some instructors prefer to keep the guy sitting while working the choke, while I see others (like yourself, and me) working off their backs while trying to sink it in. What is the reason for the sitting preference? More control? I'd like to hear your thoughts. Thanks again.

  • your suppost to repect ur elders not beat them up

  • @mrbladerben There's a loop hole for choke outs.

  • sometimes wen i do the rear naked i ask if i squishes against their windpipe because i know sometimes it happens to me, most of the time its a no but somtimes it does squish it, do you know wut im doin wrong?

  • The way I show it in this video is the safest way to apply the RNC. It is cutting off the blood vs. the air. If you dont get the V of your elbow point down his center line, under his chin, then it tends to be more of an air choke against the windpipe.

Check out my other video on YouTube, Sophisticated Basics: 4 Steps Towards a Tighter Rear Naked Choke. Step one helps keep it a blood choke vs. windpipe. Hope this helped. Thanks!

  • I have used some of these techniques in live rolls. They work. Suffocate your opponent, and leave him no space with which to escape.

A BJJ black belt once told me, "Close all the doors and open a window."

  • like the video.

I love Mr.Marker. I have worked with him under kenpo. He is the man who inspired me to try jiu jitsu. i train with 10th planet jiu jitsu eugene!!

  • Realy neat. Definitely never saw that before. Thanks for sharing!

  • I really like the "kneading the dough" tip, but I wouldn't put my hand on the top his head when I was going for the RNC.

  • Usually, I dont put my hand on the back of my opponents head but while demonstrating Joe was is a tough position to put my hand on the back of his neck, making a fist, palm facing me. Thats my goal but not always possible. Tks Scott Marker

  • why wouldnt you put your hand on the back of his head , i was lead to believe that the hand of the back of the head is used to push the neck onto yoru arm at the same time ur squeezing

  • I said "top" of the head, you do want to put it behind their neck/head. If you put your hand on top, however, then they can pull your hand off.

  • why not gable grip when you are trying to control his body?

  • Gable Grip would be fine, another valid grip for this position. I just saw Marcelo Garcia using this grip years ago for a rear naked choke and found for me, it is the best grip.

  • okay. I gotcha. I was just curious. Especially if someone was looking to gear this towards MMA and they would be sweaty, i would think that it'd be easier to slip that off, than if you used the gable grip.

  • awesome vid, only problem that i saw was you palm is to his head when the back of your hand should be to his head.

    keep the great vids comming.

  • Thank you , thank you. I have always problem with that.

  • That was great! Very well thought of.

  • u guys are great.

    where about's in B.C. are u?

(i'd love to visit u - if possible)

    thankx

    toronto ont.

  • We are actually out of Boise / Meridian Idaho, USA and big fans of Submissions 101!

  • I procratinated watching in my subscriptions because of the title. But I I have to say I actually got something from it. Thanks!

  • This is basically just over-under control, which is extremely useful and effective. Marcelo Garcia uses it alot and has many books and dvds that offer more insight on how to use it effectively. Nice Vid, btw.

  • I got that handgrip from watching Marcelo Garcia. I am big fan of him... why not borrow ideas from the best. But sometimes explaining details a little differently helps others, including myself :-)

  • great video. keep them coming. i like the philosophy.

  • Made perfect sense. Great video.

  • Nice explanation, but the biggest problem for me is still to get my arm under his chin. What can I do if he presses his chin to his breast?

  • Hook under his nose with your fingers, or rub hard into the area above his lips with a knife hand. Unless your talking about under competition rules then I don't know. :p

  • his chin will not be stronger than your arm digging in. Be patient, and keep digging in your arm. Im pretty sure after awhile his chin cant take that kind of resistance from your hand. You have to be patient. If u took his back, dont expect to choke him immediately. Just hold onto the back position, and slowly trying to get the hand in. If u didnt get the hand in, its ok... you got his back and should have won the match by points

  • screw points lol, go for subs... always

  • Face lock em. Just move your elbow up to their nose and then apply the squeeze.

  • that was awesome...

  • nice video i always end up fighting people bigger and heaqvier than me so this will surely help :D

  • nice video :D

  • great video but your assistant looks depressed

  • my bjj partner's name is also Joe Jones

  • Super detailed, nice teachings, tnx. 5/5

  • thanks for sharing

  • that should be every bodies game is having good basics any one with out them is not any good

  • Here's what great about Ari Bolden and Submissions 101... they share the good stuff. I have been a grappling since I came out of the womb, and a BJJ competitor since 1998. All you kids out there are being spoiled by the info that is on the web and need to thank Ari for giving it to you free!!!!!

I have my own details to RNC that I have picked up, but some of the details here will get a good effort tomorrow during training.

    THANKS ARI!!!

  • wow...thank you my friend...

  • I always thought that getting really good at basic moves like armbars, kimuras, triangles, RNC's, etc. was better than learning a lot of flashy, low percentage moves. Great video.

  • I definitely agree with the sophisticated basics idea, its the same philosophy as the "don't fear the man who has practiced 100,000 kicks once, but the man who was practiced one kick 100,000 times"

  • oo, i like that.

  • thanks for the video scott

  • Very interesting! thx!

  • Man, in almost 2 years of grappling I've never coated my choke hand with my secondary hand.

Man, I feel like a moron, no wonder why I never get chokes in tournaments. haha!

  • nice one scott! 5 stars

  • good videos make alot more bro 5 stars bro

  • i like these scott marker ones

  • thanks!

  • good vids scott

  • good improvement for me thanks

  • I don't mean to sound like a dick, but it may a little bit. Ever since you started putting decorated/experienced grapplers doing the demos, Sub101 has gotten much better and more beneficial to watch. Thank you for your effort and the videos. I'll keep watching.

  • marcelo holds the back like the way he recommends

  • why not gable grip the over under instead of the grip that you are recommending?

  • its good to not have the choking arm on top is why.

  • gable grip is definetly stronger, but you're not going to slip on the choke as fast. try gable gripping then sliding the choking arm, then try it with the other grip. that's my take on it. i dont know his reasons for it.

  • What do you suggest? I have to get in my sponsors. Remember, all these videos are FREE for you guys so I appreciate the support in this matter.

    cheers

  • hey ari, you should get your demographics of your audience, and then figure out what company would best suit that audience, and you are set

  • I dont know. All i'm saying is that, for me, having to wait so long for the vid to play kinda puts me off a bit. i'm sure you can understand that.

I'm just giving a bit of feedback. I dont have any solutions but it may be food for thought.

  • Thanks for the insight.

    Enjoy the videos ;-)

  • That is a pretty lame complaint, bro/lady. Like he said, they are free videos paid for by sponsors. You can fast forward, you know?

  • This reply was to tinalafermy.

  • My comp is pretty slow so no, i cant fast forward and i think my "complaint" as you so cruely dubbed it was perfectly legit. Surely u can see where i'm coming from.

Ari wants feedback from the fans but i guess we should all check with you first to make sure its legit.

  • skip through it if you dont want to watch it...

  • I prefer the s-grip. It's harder to rip off in competition and the street because they can't peel your hand off at the thumb.

  • fav and 5 stars

trying to work on my squeeze that eddie always talks about but this help so much more

  • you can make it tighter by using the back of your hand on the head instead of the palm. using the palm puts a natural curve on the wrist. really like the shoulder push.

  • Great

  • I'm not a fighter, but this is a great lesson.

  • Your right but... these details have helped reduce the amount of opponents that escape. My game is to increasing the odds of success :-)

  • these days, where everyone knows the basics, where everyone has the same tools, its intricacies like these that gives us an advantage =]

  • nice i like it. thanks.

  • nice

  • what does?

  • WOW...thanks for the upload..Will drill this tomorrow..:)

  • Very nice with the shoulder push. I have never heard of that before. Great job posting this Ari you'll forever be my first teacher.

  • nice.

  • Great video, those are some pretty useful tips.

By the way, for the "Solo Flexibility Drills" video, if I practice those three exercises regularly, would they cover everything I need for leg flexibility? Been learning bjj from a friend for half a year, and implementing 10th planet jj fundamentals into what I'm learning. Thing is I have a hard time working a rubber guard... With little flexibility alot of moves are a hassle.

  • Would you please show some "Sophisticated Basics" version of rear naked choke escape...please.

  • Here is one version: /watch?v=didKrAFFlSg

  • thanks for posting this, i think it might have been set to private on your site? or maby it was a similar video. Also there are a few private videos on your site that i am unable to wacth is there a way i could watch them or are they for certain people only. thank you.

  • Good I like it. We are always working back control so this should help some thanks.
