And to be pedantic, Mr. Antarctica, it wasn't called "CITV" until later, it was still most definitely Children's ITV. It changed a few years later, altho' Steven Ryde did use "CITV" in most announcements.
The programme then remained completely off-air for ten years (although videos and DVDs were released), until Nick Jr. revived it for their 'Nick Jr. Classics' strand in February 2006 - but annoyingly they've been showing the same 50 or so episodes ever since on a loop! A disappointment, considering they have some 1,071 editions to choose from!! (the end!)
It's about money I'm afraid, which is a shame. The episodes on Nick Jr. date from about 81/82. I'd love to see some of the episodes from my era (late 80s/early 90s)
Spireiterich, you sound like someone 'in the know' about this, so perhaps you could explain why Nick Jr. has recently (in the last few weeks) taken Rainbow off the air? Have their rights to it expired?
In 1992 and '93, the newly launched satellite channel UK Gold showed some episodes (usually very early in the morning), mainly from the inferior (in my opinion) post-Rod, Jane and Freddy era (89-92) - the last 3 years of the programme. That kept the programme in the public eye until the awful remake began on 10th January 1994, which only lasted until 25th March 1996 (cont.)>
The first episode was 'Shapes', broadcast 16th October 1972 -- so the series lasted almost 19 and a half years on-air, making it ITV's longest-running original children's programme by far. (Sooty doesn't count as Thames poached him from the BBC!) Rainbow continued to be shown weekly in its usual Friday lunchtime slot throughout 1992 in the form of repeats -- the last of these was on December 18th, but I don't know which episode. That was its last ever showing on terrestrial TV. (cont.)>
Oh dear -- I feel an essay coming on! According to the archive sales database of Fremantle Media (the copyright owners of Thames' archive), the last new episode of original Rainbow was 'If Only We Hadn't', broadcast on 6th March 1992 (six weeks after 'Ice and Water'), but probably filmed in 1991 as I don't think any new episodes were made in '92, which is a shame. (cont.)>
do you know exactly what the last new episode was and when it was broadcast? would be great if you could upload some of these unseen episodes if u have the time :)
Carlton had completely ruined ITV; not that I've ever lived in the vicinity of London; but remember the original continuity announcements, which were done by members of the general public?
@RobertTheDodger654 (and ingravegreen) Thames was actually made in *1968*, on Monday the 29th of July, but yes, I know what it was like for most people when it was changed after twenty-five years to *Carlton* as ITV's weekday franchise holder; this is why Rainbow had a new appearance (and even theme tune, what's worse, no *Geoffrey*, for goodness sake, who was even replaced by the annoying *Cleo*) in 1994, as the original *1972* version was owned by *Thames*
(comment continued) @RobertTheDodger654 (and ingravegreen) Thames changing to Carlton at the beginning of 1993 is why TV-am was changed to GMTV (and, triple T!, why TVS, stood for 'Television South', no longer existed by this point, and why the Tina VS Andrew Catchphrase episode, aired on Saturday the 24th of October 1992, was the last TVS episode, and why the show had a new appearance, theme tune and logo as of Friday the 30th of September 1994)
@RobertTheDodger654 (and ingravegreen) Moreover, you two users *will* *remember* when LWT, which debuted on Friday the 2nd of August 1968, just four days after the introduction of Thames, was no more after thirty-four years as from Sunday the 27th of October 2002. Thames changing to Carlton at the beginning of 1993 is why this version of Rainbow was no more when it was twenty years old (of course, making 1992 being its last year).
Bring back zippy and his crew! I still remember watching this show even though i was 11. I remebember Charles Foster from Granada TV would often pop-up after the show had finished.

Well, you're right there. I mainly used "CITV" for time-saving-in-typing reasons. ;-)

Sorry, but that is wrong.
Its How (Including when it was called "How 2")
The original series ran from 1966-1981 and "How 2" ran from 1990-2004.
29 years in total!

Sorry, I should have said "ITV's longest *continuously* running original children's programme"!

yeah, the bastards of broadcaster were carlton KevCityboy they even closed down old ATV Centre and look what's happening to that now.
Backintimetv 4 years ago
they shiut it down because carlton are moving with the times.
I hate it too but times are changing. With more and more programmes coming from independents, what is the point of these larger studios.
Yeah, i know that some of them can be hired out to the independents but ATV Centre was, by last year:
a) unsightly. it looked horrible
b) falling to pieces
c) not equipped for digital broadcasting.
Central were still using tube cameras until the studios were closed!

@KevCityboy (and wayzotoichi) I've spoken to RobertTheDodger654 and even ingravegreen about this (I mean they're not on their *own* on this subject).
