This is RIDICULOUS! You've no legal obligation to have one do you?
I don't know much outside of " I don't have a contract, I know something the general public don't know, I don't have to talk to them, they're just chancing people's desire to stay on the right side of things at £150 per year, " and so on.
To the ignorant, TV License is a scary term. I was like that. But to the sussed, it's a bunch of lame jokers out to chance a quick buck.
The law is the television licensing act. Now, I know as well as you that its a statute given the force of law with the consent of the "governed" - but the trouble is, they dont care and have more police, guns and tanks than us. The remedy is either just dont talk to them *or* by far the best thing to do is throw away your television. Its just broadcasting wall to wall mindless crap (exc richplanet starship ;) sky chn 201). The thing that authority *really* hate, is being ignored.
Do you think you are being ripped off in Britain by the BBC. Take a look at Ireland who have to pay for RTE who show non stop rubbish show loads of commercials and we still have to pay them 160 euro for the Privilege. (NOT)
New figures obtained by the Irish Independent reveal there has been a jump of more than 150pc in the numbers jailed for failing to pay fines since 2007. But the BANKSTERS get paid large bonuses for bringing the country to it's knees by swindling billions. GO FIGURE!
Wobbler. You let a tv licence guy in your house? Allowed him to search your house? Showed him your telly? They'll leave you alone for now but within 2 years they will be back to harrass you again.
You CAN own a tv and not pay a license. It just has to be unable to receive tv shows AS THEY ARE BROADCAST. If they can show shows only at least 28 minutes after original broadcast, then you can have one.
I have one myself, and I showed the tv license man that it doesnt have a coax or other cable enabling the reception of tv shows at the time of broadcast, he left me alone.
Well the BBC is the first ever TV channel and radio so I do think people shed pay for it I do I mean how are they spice to get the money to make the TV shows?
The BBC are bloody marvelous! They have provided an invaluable service for nearly a century.
We should be paying for an Internet license as well, the BBC provide amazing online services. Any hateful non-believers should go on the BBC website and realize why we need to pay for it.
@Lorddoucheington The problem with the tv license is that it should be ONLY for BBC, but it isnt, it covers all stations, even satelite and cable stations.
If the option was there to not receive BBC, and therefore not have to pay for a license, then it would be ok. The other channels have advertising that pays their revenue.
The BBC now use advertising, just in shows, which should mean they dont need tv license money either.
I wont even get into the laughable argument of "invaluable service"
i haven't watched tv in 2 an half yrs approx yet i still keep gettin tv men round sayin i should pay for a license, yet when asked why considerin i dont watch it they cant answer an leave
@boontime Wrong. You can have a TV set legally if it is used for watching DVDs or playing games. You will need one, legally, if you are watching LIVE television broadcasts through it.
the bbc is not that good anyway in my opinion and i have read ALL OF THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS and providing it is not being viewed live you can watch anything from there service when available anyway :) have a nice day!!!
The law: Part 4 of the Communications Act 2003 makes it an offence to install or use a television receiver to watch or record any television programmes as they're being shown on television without a valid TV Licence. The Act empowers the BBC to make and amend the terms and conditions of a licence.
FYI, Part 4 of the Communications Act 2003 - titled "Licensing of TV Reception" - makes it an offence to install or use a television receiver to watch or record any television programmes as they're being shown on television without a valid TV Licence.
Do the simple BNP support maths: 1997 0.09% 2001 0.25% 2005 0.7% 2010 1.9% 2015 5.5% 2020 16% 2025 45% 2025 is the Year of BNP Government. Our cause is just so our victory is assured - and this is if BNP growth of support doesn't accelerate. Which it will!
You said you did not have a tv licence, he did not check, they usually try to enter to look, wierd guy....i'm suprissed he did not ask you 'give me the monies'.
@lovinit19791 You make some good points. It's interesting to note that the legislation enforcement is with the BBC and a handful of private companies, not with the government. This makes it harder for people to access information or for anyone to challenge the government over licensing. What if you don't watch the BBC? What if you have a TV and don't watch programs as they're broadcast? Now they're trying to apply the licensing law to the Internet! You need a license just to watch streamed video
the question to him should have been "if you here under the law, then you should know what law and all the associated requirements of that law. if you feel that you have the right or duty to enforce that law you should be able to and obligated recite such law."
@th86stone Well he clearly doesn't know the law. He's merely an employee of a private company with no authority to enforce the law. He's just collecting data. If they believe you have a TV and are lying, and you refuse them entry they can return with the police who then enforce the law and carry out a property search and charge you with an offence.
The TV Licence man didn't seem very honest (surprise surprise) - to listen to him, you would assume that you need a licence to "own" a TV - not until almost 3:20 in does he even mention that it is to "receive live broadcasts" (not simply ownership)
This is what I intend to do when I get my own place. I won't be paying a license for owning a TV because I know the law and I know that their is no obligation for me to have a license.
@darksettler It is, it's an indirect tax. And since the BBC is not impartial and is government controlled media, it's an outrage that the public should have to fund it. And what about freedom of choice. What if a person wishes to own a TV and not watch BBC channels. Why do we have to fund the BBC when we might not approve of it or watch. You could argue it creates a biased media, since the BBC is better funded than all other channels and is reliant on co-operating with the gov for funding.
@darksettler I agree. why should i pay £145 a year so some jumped up posh fuck can go on an expensive round the world holiday then sit back smiling as i watch his shitty excuse of a program? fuck em, I have internet, i wont pay for another institution that is outdated and corrupt to the core. keep up the good work lad.

You DO NOT require to have a licence just for 'having a telly', as the TVL man seems to be claiming.
You only require a licence if you RECEIVE tv broadcasts.
This is stated clearly in TVL's own rules!
