It's not a good idea to use the same 3G network for a speed compare test where the devices are so close to each other. You know the devices can disturb each others signal so those two devices probably can't use it with equal speed.
@LenEdgerly, I am thinking of getting a Kindle 3G. Are there any hidden fees that you would be charged for using the web browser? If you went to google and searched something or like you did when you pulled up the NY Times. Would you get charged for that? I know that it say no monthly bill and no contract, but sometimes there is a catch 22. If you could let me know that would great.
@firebirdcdr Amazon pays for it, which is also why it costs more.(If your getting 3g+wifi) But try not to use gigabytes of data or amazon may cut you off. What I'm saying is, don't refresh a page full of images and content fifty times a day
@kilthebatman The display technology of the kindle is e-ink, not LCD or LED.
Without getting too technical, it works by alternating the ACTUAL physical surface color between white and black. (Current e-ink tech does not support color...yet)
The battery life is able to be in terms of weeks as opposed to hours due to no backlight requirement.
This also means that refresh rate is nil, so video isn't practical.
(Changing physical display material is WAY slower than just manipulating light.)
I'm really thinking of buying my folks a 3G Kindle as they travel to Canada and Overseas a lot. Still can't decide if I should buy a 3G myself or a Wifi one as I do travel a bit but I also stay in Canada most of the time. Hmmmm.
Wow, the Kindle 3 seems to be a huge leap forward, it shows real webpages instead of the text only versions. And you are correct, as great as the ipad is, I am on on right now, it sucks for real reading. For real readers, Kindle is easily the best out there.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! I've possessed a cupidity to buy a e-reader tabelt with e-ink to consume news (ny times, wsj, smartmoney, economist, reuters) more than read books because I spend 2 - 3 hours a day reading the news after work. The original kindle browser is horrible and I don't like the glare/backlight/color on the ipad. The kindle 3 seems perfect and will only get better. Would like a larger kindle 3 though. Can you please do a review of the browser with the wifi? Please?
Good comparison, but I doubt either the K3 or K2 would do very well with Google Maps, simply because it's going to be rendering a lot of Javascript.
It's entirely possible that Amazon have developed a killer Javascript engine like Google have for Chrome, but I think we'd be hearing more about it if they had.
@britishcoder I think there's a way to use google maps mobile, which returns text directions instead of maps. Andrys Basten at kindleworld.blogspot.com has info on this.
@LenEdgerly Ah okay. My fault. I've not used anything but a Nexus One for a long time now, so the idea of a basic mobile version of a site is a little alien to me.
@mikecane2008 Mike, I just tried this again to make sure. I opened nytimes.com, zoomed in on the rectangle, moved cursor to select headline of an article and opened up. Then clicked on Article Mode, and there was still text on the right side of the column that was truncated, so you have to move the cursor to the right with the 5-way to read the end of the lines. Not all of them, and the Article Mode cuts off just a few letters in each line - enough to irritate.
@mikecane2008 I wasn't sure what you mean by Print mode - I tried disabling images on the K3, then did Article Mode again, still had problem with right margin cutting off text.
@LenEdgerly On the NYTimes site, as with most newspaper sites, there's a "print article" link somewhere on the page. This brings you to an HTML page that has pretty much just the text and any images related to the article, no ad's. I expect that'd look far better on the Kindle and may actually mean you don't need to trigger Article Mode.
Still waiting for my Kindle. ARGH! WANT IT NOW. :)
Thanks for the video. I agree, the article mode appears to be disappointing, especially as this is crucial to making the browser a useful application. Perhaps Amazon should licence Instapaper. It does the job great on multiple platforms.

Place the K3 in landscape; view article without truncation problem.

Once you're *in* the article, can you then invoke Article Mode? It seems to me it probably works like Readability on Safari.
