Taping the blade provides a better "grip" of the puck when you stick handle and , I'm not 100% sure on this one but, another reason is that when you shoot the puck the tape will give the puck more spin meaning a faster shot. The main reason, though, is the grip that's provided.
It is funny how times change. I played semi-competitive back in the day. Man, if you candy caned your stick like this back in the day, guys would have jumped all over you in the locker room. Ovechkin plays both ways... the majority of hits come in the defensive end, you generally don't hit when your team has the puck. I've read a few analysts that say Ovechkin is definitely one of the best two-way forwards in the league. The argument that Crosby does more is just an assertion, the evidence points the other way.

Shootout chances: That is a ridiculously small sample size. Small samples can be used to prove anything. Shooting percentage: Shooting percentage means very little. How many pucks go in the net does. Ovechkin blows Crosby away at that. Assists: Finally you've shown a good stat that makes your case! Easily explained though, look at the number of goals Ovechkin scores! His line depends on him to score because he's the best scorer in the league. To have him giving up shots to pass would be crazy.

Variables such as the difference in quality of teammates (linemates, defence, goalie) on each side has a huge impact. I would argue that as a whole the Penguins have had a better team than the Caps since Crosby and Ovechkin started their careers. Also, Crosby and Ovechkin didn't play head to head every shift of every game so that further makes it a spurious correlation.
My point exactly. There is a unquantifiable aspect to hockey that needs to be considered. It doesn't seem to show up in the stats. It is registered in the success of the team and what role that player has on said team.

Crosby does WAY more for a team then Ovie does, they are both great players but Ovie only plays offence while Crosby plays all over the ice, also Ovies shooting % is crap because he takes so many shots, im not saying hes bad, i like how hes a physical player and he can definatly put the puck in the net but i definatly think that Crosby will do more for the team then Ovie would

Ovechkin has been in the top 5 in the league in hits per year every single season. You won't even find Crosby in the top 100. Ovechkin plays both ways... the majority of hits come in the defensive end, you generally don't hit when your team has the puck. I've read a few analysts that say Ovechkin is definitely one of the best two-way forwards in the league. The argument that Crosby does more is just an assertion, the evidence points the other way.

That is a bold claim that you have no proof of. You have no idea how much hockey I watch or who I watch when I watch it. I present you with evidence and you refute it with pure speculation. I'm not saying Crosby isn't a good two-way player, he clearly is. I'm just saying that Ovechkin is better in my opinion and the numbers back that up. If you'd like to find some stats to back up your claim, please do.

God, this is like debating a 5 year old. I showed that the stats show their points per game are almost identical, but Ovechkin has far more goals. So your argument about that is not borne out by the numbers. Even so, that has nothing to do with the DEFENSIVE PLAY that you were originally arguing about.

You could also look at the awards Ovechkin has won compared to Crosby... last year Ovechkin won the Hart (MVP), Pearson (MVP as voted by players) and Richard (most goals). What individual awards did Crosby win? None! Similar trend in previous seasons as well.

Pearson Award (twice), Hart Memorial Trophy (twice), Art Ross Trophy, Maurice Richard Trophy (twice). Crosby: Art Ross, Pearson, and Hart once each. Ovechkin: 233 goals. Crosby: 142 goals. Ovechkin has more total points and far more hits. It's not even a close contest.

He's been out injured for almost two weeks! Before he was injured he was in first. Also, that is for the first 20 games of this season. All the stats I've used are for Crosby and Ovechkin's entire careers spanning hundreds of games, a much larger and more accurate sample size.

Your argument for the start of this season actually works against you. Ovechkin: 14 games played, 23 points, 1.64 points per game. Crosby: 20 games played, 20 points, 1 point per game. So Ovechkin has a much higher points per game average, and he has 3 more points than Crosby in 6 less games. Once again, you fail.

If I'm picking stats then you should be able to do the same thing. So far you haven't shown any stats that support your point. I've made several arguments for Ovechkin as a complete player and good leader. When I analyzed their career stats I used points per game, which would not be affected by injury. Also you can't explain the massive goal differential between them by injury. As I said before, I'm not a Caps fan, I'm a Leafs fan. I don't have any reason to favour Ovechkin over Crosby.

Over their careers they've put up roughly the same points per game.The only argument I used for points was to disprove your claim that Ovechkin is having a subpar season so far. Shootout chances: That is a ridiculously small sample size. Small samples can be used to prove anything. Shooting percentage: Shooting percentage means very little. How many pucks go in the net does. Ovechkin blows Crosby away at that. Assists: Finally you've shown a good stat that makes your case! Easily explained though, look at the number of goals Ovechkin scores! His line depends on him to score because he's the best scorer in the league. To have him giving up shots to pass would be crazy.

Yes. If they were playing a game of 1 on 1 where no external factors could skew the results. Once again, this is a team sport. Variables such as the difference in quality of teammates (linemates, defence, goalie) on each side has a huge impact. I would argue that as a whole the Penguins have had a better team than the Caps since Crosby and Ovechkin started their careers. Also, Crosby and Ovechkin didn't play head to head every shift of every game so that further makes it a spurious correlation.

My point exactly. There is a unquantifiable aspect to hockey that needs to be considered. It doesn't seem to show up in the stats. It is registered in the success of the team and what role that player has on said team.
