If the government spent our taxes on providing a free education for all instead of wasting it all on illegal/immoral wars so that the country's elite can profit from it, then our kids would not need to join up & become cannon fodder. If they don't get killed then it still costs us money to look after them because they can't fit back into society because they are so fucked up with PTSD. There are no winners in war except those profiteering from the aftermath of it
number one thing, you never even see the wishlist. if you do they completely ignore it anyway. if you don't get your station in your contract you don't get it at all.
the military is what you make it. it's entirely too large of a career pool to say "it will do this, it will do that." anyone who makes a statement like that should be suspect.
well i want to join army infantry and i have little asthma syptoms like every 2 years when i get sick and sometime im not active i think its because of that but does anyone know if i can still join the infantry if im active will they give me a chance or what??
Also, everyone who says they joined the military just for the pay and benefits should be dishonorably discharged, lose all benefits, and sent a bill for their training, room, and board. People like you are responsible for the disheveled state of our military, and wanna know the best part? Many of the massacres committed by US troops were perpetrated by soldiers who only joined for the money! It's the damn military, you WILL likely see combat if you join! If you can't handle that, go on welfare.
I have a cousin is about to leave the Army after 7 years and he's in the best shape of his life, extremely disciplined, and most importantly, old enough to know what he wants to do with his life: he wants to be an architect. He was an anti-social basket-case who had no goals before he joined. He's served 2 tours of Afghanistan (with combat experience as an 11B), yet he's got a cooler head than I do.
Those who haven't served should stop spouting nonsense about "brainwashing". It isn't true.
@DarthCormac Would you prefer that someone who has "served" said the same things? I was an airborne infantryman who deployed to Iraq during their first elections, my unit and I saw the most heavy combat of the entire occupation (read up on Haifa Street if you want--we were even featured in British GQ), etc. For my troubles, I got a permanent spine injury (which has put this libertarian on government pay--an unenviable position and constant source of depression and shame), a wonderful divorce..
..with the woman who brought my two amazing kids into the world and an inability to communicate compassionately with her and a sense that no one can understand my mentality or what I went through, creating a reticence to speak with hardly anyone, PTSD, fucked up knees and ears, and nothing positive to speak of. The military is not a positive thing. It's a bunch of guns pointed in all directions.
Well of course it's not a brain washing facility. I mean that's the least of our worries right? Most of the state indoctrination takes place in elementary school. Take it from a person who comes from a military family. Combat changes people. Often times *not* for the better. I find this mantra that the service is the *only* place an individual can learn discipline and gain 'direction.' That's nonsense honestly. (cont)
At the risk of sounding condescending, reading your comment left me with the feeling you were trying to sell me a product that doesn't work. Aside from the obvious financial gain, the service doesn't offer any direction or motivation you couldn't find working swing shift at McDonald's.
a living wage here in the U.S. in my state is about $16000 USD before taxes. This is without major expenses like medical/insurance bills, car payments, student loans or any other kind of major debt. A friend of mine works as a cook with about 4 years experience. He makes $9/hr. roughly. That's maybe $18000/year if he doesn't take time off or get sick or no major bullshit happens to him. He can get by, but just barely. All this talk about savings for entry level employees is bullshit.
Some people, some people, come out of the military and they are crazy. Not all, some. Some people don't know how to supervise, they become screamers. I don't usually get this mad at Stef. He's a good guy, smart too, but he's just trying to scare the crap outta this poor kid. If you've gotta lie, and make crap up, to support your argument, you should really reconsider that. I'd say that makin' crap up to support your point wasn't UPB.
How do DIs get their jobs? The decide their sick of their current job, fill out a form and switch. There is absolutely no screening process for any basic training instructors. Stef keeps talking about DIs like these aren't govt employees. They just show up to collect a check.
So, Stef is arguing that Drill Instructors, government employees, are super proficient at their jobs? That's bad form. They show up for the paycheck. Heck, my wife is a TI in the Air Force. I assure you, she is no master of reading people. I hate to say it, but Stef is just fear mongering at this point. Trying to scare the kid, by talking up DIs. Bring the real argument, don't try to scare people.
I think that Stef thinks basic training is Full Metal Jacket. It isn't. Is there some insanity, yes. Are the DIs some kind of mind-reading monsters, no. All you need to do to get through is run, fold, and march. Any idiot can get through basic training. All that Officer and a Gentleman crap is propaganda.
I don't think Stef has ever been, nor knows anyone in, the military. It really isn't this breeding ground of monsters he describes. I did 6 years, it really isn't that bad. Yes, there's an insane amount of manual labor. Yes, you work around 70 hours a week. But really, it pays so much more than a regular job. There's food, healthcare, shelter, and security beyond imagining. You think everyone fights, really? I went 6 years, fired a gun 4 times, never at a person. It's not that bad.
I hate to be the voice of dissent, but the military ain't that bad. I don't know about Setf's "Grapes of Wrath" argument. There may not be any jobs that pay a living wage. I had the exact same problem in 2003, I moved to Cali. I got a job at a Target, it was the only source of employment within 150 miles. The job didn't pay enough for me to make rent. FYI, in 2003 I had spent 3 years in college. There are no jobs. There haven't been any jobs. $25k as a waiter? Try $12k.
A fulltime waiter with no titties does not make 25k a year...at 5.15/h MAYBE 11k if he was suer olite. The average cost of rent say 700 a month would cost 8400/year alone. Most waiters I know (in 2011) make around 2.15/h. Me? I tear down and rebuild fences for 50-80 dollars every 3 days and Im fuckin sick of it. 4yrs of no doctor visits 250ft fences a low sun and a deadline does worse things to you than 4 years in the Army. All I can say, is if you wish you could understand Latin, dont enlist!
This guy is right about the military being terrible. But he makes it sound kind of easy to get odd jobs or w/e. It gets very discouraging when you don't get any work and then when you do you wind up in a shitty and abusive environment it becomes enraging. When everyone treats you like shit it's hard to be outgoing and make connections.
this is more for a person who is not sure and has no where else to go with no money or job. But when somone is finicialy good and is fine and still wants to enlist....idk i just thought the title and video didnt match up to well
I swear it's like people don't understand there are non-combat jobs in the military, shit just become a veterinarian or a cook or hell a UAV pilot you know jobs where you most likely won't die, me personally think a job is a job and respect our military so yeah whatever. cowards.
It's a loaded gun Bad economy>No jobs>where can I go?>The army!
Pros:Pay for xxx
Con:if I come back alive or sane
Also I hate the time table we're put on when it comes to college after finishing high school I'd enjoy some quiet time and a job.Gives one time to think and search personal interest without hindrance other than the job.
In Finland you don't need to go to the army if you are overweight or have a permanent medication for any condition. Those two are very easy to achieve! Just eat like a horse and you'll get both qualities (double or nothing, am I right?).
Damn, I wish I had someone to talk to me like this before I joined. I was in Air Force special ops for 4 years, and now I'm a veteran. Stefan was right about everything. If you have any moral compass you will hate yourself to some degree. Quite frankly I'm disgusted with the decision I made and who I have let myself become. This is beneath all the accolades and awards I have received. I'm trying to start over and become an entrepreneur and actually help people rather than ruin their lives now.
@themagus187 I completely agree with you I have made the mistake of joining, drawn in by the pursuit of college and "helping serve the nation" I'm still in with 2 years and 6 months left but I feel like a piece of shit fighting for our government, fighting for NOTHING "Freedom" my ass. Joining the Army has been and will always be the worst decision of my life.
Stefan's advice is right on the money. I work in restaurants as a cook and I would say the servers(thats what we call them in Canada) make very good money and also enjoy very flexible hours. If you don't have a job and you don't have a lot of experience, by all means be a server. You just have to be good with people. Unfortunately some people are assholes.
Unfortunately I live in Estonia, and there is still national service here. I'm going to be a slave for 9 months. Not sure how I can get out of it. Apparently I can only take civil service(Which is also slavery, but at least I'm not learning how to kill people!) if I have religious convictions, and even then I need to have 2 friends write to prove I have pacifist views! 9 months of my life are about to get stolen. I could not be angrier at the state.
The US Military can be a great opportunity. I served 4 years and it changed my life for the better, completely turned me aournd. Did you serve in the military Stef? Bad experience?
It isnt for everyone but I had a lot of time off when we werent deployed. The Army took good care of the soldiers when I was in 03-07.
This kid should have talked to me he would have shipped out for sure.
Im just wondering, but do you have something against the military? I dont think you said anything bad about it, but you acted as if the army would be a bad thing to do, which its actually very good.
Anyone who listens to this broadcaster with no real education or experience backing him to make an informed decision about the military is stupid. If youre going to listen to this leftwinged liberal idiot with no backing - at least take the educated choice of going to talk with a veteran who has been there and done it.
@ROTC44532 Stefan Molyneux left wing without any education? If you're going to make ridiculous personal attacks, at least have them vaguely correspond to reality.
If I were to apply your reasoning, I would have to talk to an ex-burglar before deciding not to become a burglar. Does that make sense to you? Does anything make sense to you?
Go to a community college and don't pay a premium for institutions that attempt to brainwash you then hand you a piece of paper. Don't want the army to come knock at your door? Don't enlist. If they come, hide somewhere else, your not home. The caller is a noob......stupid cunt.
wow, way to manipulate this poor kid. Kinda wish you were a little more objective. You failed to recognize that joining the military may have been a good experience for him.
You will only be doing that kind of thing if you join the Infantry, or armor, or artillery. This kid apparently had a high asvab score, and there are plenty of jobs in the army that would have given him advancement in his artistic desires. By the way, even if he did get deployed, as long as he wasnt an Infantry man or whatnot, he wouldnt be fighting, he'd be doing what he was trained to do, and if that was in computers or something, he would have been doing that on some huge FOB.
@cougfan755 The kid called in knowing Stefan's view that the military was not a good experience. He was looking for alternatives to joining the military. It would be morally irresponsible for Stefan to say the military can be a healthy experience, when he does not believe it can be.
I'm in the army now. And i had the same problem as this kid. and i couldnt find a job. no where to go. out of highschool. no where to turn but great college money as the ads and recruiter says! we have no time for college. its all a scam!
The military isn't that bad, lol you guys make me laugh. It's not going to turn you into any crazy killing machine. It's not going to tear away your soul so you lack all creativity and imagination or anything like that. If you join the military it will take 5 years of your life, surely a high cost, but it can also give you many great things. It gave me discipline, focus, and maturity. It allowed me, a relatively poor guy, to go to college long enough to get a master's degree. It's not terrible.
I don't know where you find these brutal screaming ex-military guys. I'm a Marine vet and I'm just about as mellow a guy as you'll ever want to meet. I'm no 'mime', but that wasn't exactly one of my life goals before I joined the Marines, lol.
No it will be difficult to go to school while your are in the army on the Active Duty side. You are there's. Your not always guaranteed to get off work at times or have weekends off. When your in the Army your a soldier 24/7 no matter if it's the weekends or after 5pm. You can still get called back in any time and it happens. Trust me now I wish I hadn't joined....
at 18 i was enticed to join military because the tv commercials and the media shows them as Heroes and people respected them
lesser reasons of adventure and seeing the world but main reason was this pressure of needing to become something and this was a quick ticket in the way the media portrayed people who were part of it
having to kill people or fight a war for some leader who can't fight it himself never entered my mind
My brother is going to sign for the largest thug base the military. I tried to talk it out with him,but he is believing the all you can be propaganda too much.
I was on board with this man up until about 20:00. Most people after joining the military come back as better people. An example would be my brother who was a drug user and he came back clean and started a family. The people he met in his training are now his best friends. They often do things to help their community such as speaking to students or working with charities.
The way you speak you make it seem as if everyone in the military is a sociopath who is evil.
@tyanth That is mostly true during peace time. But it's different during war time. Most soldiers don't get out as better people. More than half of them leave service with mental illness and substance abuse problems.
>More than half of them leave service with mental illness and substance abuse problems.
Wow, where are you getting this from? If that were true, we'd have a lot of crazy drug addicts on our hands boyo. Not saying that no one returns from war fucked up, but "more than half" is laying it on way too thick. Plus you're mainly talking about the Army and Marines, which does not equal the entire service. The majority of Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard personnel never see combat.
@tyanth Agreed, I'm pissed that I joined idiotic of me but I am certainly a better person that I have joined, still would recommend it to very very few people.
Thank you very much for this video. It definitely helped me think about my options before joining the U.S. Military by watching you explain things so thoroughly.
Just a little background information by the way: I've recently finished my term with the Navy. Yes, sacrifices have to be made, but as the person you're talking with in this video knows they are inevitable. In that time I've saved, invested, completed 2 years worth of school, have practical vocational training(electronics) and saw much of the world. Any job where you're paying taxes is comparable to a non-combat job in the military in terms of supporting wars. Fact of life.
Stephan, I think you make some very valid points. I do have to harp on a few things though. First off, not everyone in the military comes out as a loud-uncreative-screamer type. This greatly depends on your job. Aside from that, most people are not as dedicated as they thought they would be but it is ENTIRELY possible to work on a valid education in the service and it was highly encouraged everywhere I've been. Some people really do have integrity to be themselves.
stay out of the Military? you mean.Army is a branch.. easy thing to do Join the Air Guard. and be a Mech. I mean if you want to pussy out stay on your moms tit and never take a adventure join the Air guard :)
of course this is a old vid but still kid ever heard of wal-mart lol.
truth is the Military is great for ppl starting out in life heck i'm joining it.
listening to this guy is a retard, and so is the kid. the kid should of hit of all the branches.
People who say there are just no jobs in the state are full of it. What they mean to say is "there are no jobs in the states desirable to me." There are plenty of ways to become self employed. I am a college dropout with little experience in anything yet I work a day job and own two businesses on the side. I had no job experience going into my job, and everything I learned for my businesses I learned on the internet. It really isnt that difficult.
Sure, you may need to work at a lower denomination than you are used to, but that means you must lower your standard of living. Get rid of some luxuries, move somewhere cheaper, or find a second job. Reasons why you may have difficulty however may include: sickness, children (stop having them), disability (work on the internet, its non-physical), language barriers.
"Stop loss" is completely legal. For example if you sign up for 5 years, they can make you stay in another 3 years. It's because the military can make you stay in 8 years and that is in everyone's contract. They just can't read very well apparently.
All i know is that the Army isnt that bad. I cant say that i would rather be in the Army than be a civilian but there are just no jobs in the states, and if i wanted to just sit around and bum it and feed off welfare i guess its cool, but there is nothing wrong with the service. People are just afraid of the un-known, so if your scared dont go i guess. Its freaky to leave but its not that flippin bad this dude makes it sound like the last thing your ever gonna do in life.
welllll wut was ur job at the army??? infantry or were u the gas pumper ? there is a big difference. much respect to both jobs. but one is definitely more dangerous thatn tthhe other
in retrospect, because i used to feel that my asshole parents made me stronger, so for me, I am attracted to situations that put me in danger.. hm, ya think this is at the heart of the 'invincible teenager' mentality?
Stephan, I cannot hear YOU in this video. I don't know why his sound but not yours is working, but I haven't been able to hear it for like a month, and I have this problem with some of your other videos. I heard it just fine before. Can you fix that?
@stefbot I realize it's a year late, but on my headphones Stefs voice comes from the left channel and the interviewee's voice comes from the right channel. It might have something to do with the speakers being balanced towards the right side channel.
Its not stereo, the caller is channel right, and stefbot is channel left, maybe one of your speakers isn't set up with, but watching the video not in high quality will force the audio to mono and might fix your problem.
Being impaled in the horns of a dilemma can be quite brutal, emotionally. This guy had a bad case of cognitive dissonance toppled with low self esteem due to a psychotic environment . Growing up without any consistency, structure and principles usually does that to a man. This is why people like Stefan are so important. They're a beacon of light for those lost on an ocean of inconsistency.
in my opinion it is better to join the army after getting a degree in collage and entering as an officer. i was about to make a big mistake of my life by joining the navy straight from high school, but i got information from friends that are in the military and decided to wait till i get my degree and enter as a nurse officer. But i believe military is not for everyone.
Real men don't take orders...they take responsibilities! My brother took a welding class which costed $60 And good welders make an average of $60000/year. There are many possibilities. Going into the Military doesn't have to be an option...there are so many other things that can be done.
My brother joined the military last year but the difference is that he did have options. His education was being paid for.He wanted "life experience."Afghanistan has changed him. I think that you have to suspend your moral and ethical beliefs in any type of corrupt atmosphere. I believe that the military does brainwash you in asserting their power. I hope that people who have reached that fork in the road see this video and re-evaluate their choices on any given matter concerning their future.
It is an 8 year term. Some period of active time followed by some period of inactive time up to 8 years. The split varies by contract, it might be 2/6 or 4/4 (common) or 6/2. Your obligated for the full 8 years though.
If you do 20 years and 'retire', and draw a retirement check, you are still technically obligated to age 60 or 65, even though you are 'retired'.
You first 4 years in service, it will be next to impossible to attend college.
"Because that would be the definition of a government?"
It would not. The methods used by and the structure of a society are two very different things.
"You were arguing about the efficiency of a free market versus socialism."
I was not.
"In other words, you're using a red herring."
Actually, you're the one using red herrings here. You used three of them in the post I'm replying to right now. The definition of a government, economic systems and the red herring accusation.
Wow, I think this video was a godsend. This very day I am expecting a phone call from the Army because I did an online enlisting. While I may not be stuck in the same predicament as the individual in this clip, I am also having trouble finding work & am wanting to go to college for art. This video really made me think more sensible and I won't be answering that phone call....
I am so gratified to hear this my friend -- and so glad that you have found a way to stay out of that black hole... :) Congratulations, magnificently done!
But from my perspective, that would be a prime example of something that a government would be far more efficient at.
By the way, how did you determine that the roads that were paved had nothing wrong with them? Visually, or did some expert tell you? Much of what governments do, can appear idiotic to people on the outside, but they may nevertheless be well thought out. Maybe one road was a high priority and the other wasn't. Maybe the one that got repaved was in greater need of it.
Oh I agree that governments are inefficient and incompetent, but how do you figure that a people without a government would be more efficient and more competent?
Ok, you do realize without a government there would be people killing people, robbing each other and the list goes on. I don't trust people enough to run the world by themselves. I rather be in this Capitalist system. I really like it but MUCH better than not system at all.
In the last 2 wars, Germany had double the population of France. When was the last time the US went to war with a country double its population and with more than double its industrial base, instead of picking on smaller third-world countries such as Vietnam and Iraq?
Everything said in this video is 100% true, wether it was based on opinion and/or speculation. I joined the army and realized I made a mistake in doing that, I shouldve been patient for other oppurtunities that were coming my way. Now im struggling to get by and have caused more problems for myself.
In Norway we get drafted. It's either army or jail pretty much. I joined, but it only made my feelings towards the amry, religion (I read the new testament while I was there) and government deteriorate. The worst part was seeing people who agreed with me in the begining, oppose me towards the end. I also pretty much got ordered not to talk to the new recruits due to my anti-military attituted. PS: In Norway you "only" get drafted for a year.
I don't disagree, but the best guitar teacher I ever had served in the army 5+ years. James Keenan (lead singer of Tool, A Perfect Circle) served in the army as well. I'm sure the list goes on. It prolly just depends on the person. Just throwing that out there.
If this guy is having trouble paying for school he should just go to a community college. The school I am at right now offers photography and it is only $2000 per semester. He could go to a similar school for two years and transfer to a four year school.
Hey, Stef, I can't remember the video under which there were those comments about the anarchy issue when due to the lack of police, some crazy guy would kill people inside a bus.
Well, here you go, Vince Weiguang Li,
Asian Immigrant stabs and beheads man on bus
watch?v=_JrE94ttNhs
I hope this is not too off topic, considering the beheadings of NATO soldiers going on in the war zones.
From CTV (Canada AM). A man - Vince Weiguang Li of Edmonton - stabs and beheads his fellow passenger, 19 year-old Tim McLean, with a Bowie knife. This is the first video on the subject on YouTube. Canadian news outfits are not only slow, they put an embargo on their videos. It took 12 hours for this to reach YouTube.
I've worked in a camera shop and I can say, first hand, it was a great place to gain experience and connections. On top of that you are usually able to get a nice discount on the products your shop sells, that can include printing as well. You can shoot event photography ( weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, etc ) on the side and advertise for it while working. If you want to be a photographer I can't think of a better job to grab. Good luck!
I read that the best economic situation in the US now is in Texas and Oklahoma. Indeed the belt of states going from Texas up to Montana is doing relatively well.
After listening to the kid I get the feeling that he's not giving the real reasons why he wants to go into the army. Maybe he's attracted by the authoritarian structure after all.
Or maybe he's scared shitless of striking out on his own. So was I when I was his age. I had no idea what to do.
Well I wouldn't say that I'm that busy, here or when I was overseas. Let's just there are certain jobs you can sign up for which will include lots of time monitoring equipment and you have internet access, so you can do schoolwork. Still If I had it all over to do again I wouldn't have joined, I'd have found some way to pay for school. Besides you never know, you could become an anarcho-capitalist while in the army, and your screwed.
Mopuffy01: There was no disrespect shown to those who "served." Stef's title was on point. He offered advice to a young person on "how to stay out of the army. This young man also expressed that he did not want to go but felt that he had to. He felt backed into a corner and Stef merely pointed out that there are other options for those who enlist as a "last resort."
You mean 'support our troops' nonsense? Why not stem the flow of suffering at its source, stand outside a recruitment center and talk to the young easily influenced men who think they are 'serving their country' by going over to foreign lands and killing and subjugating its inhabitants.
i would not be stopped by someone who yelled at me outside a recruitment center. also we are not going to be passive while they the terrorists fly planes into my structures and threaten to kill me. hell yeah ill blow their head off! WAKE UP, TIME TO DIE!
There is a lot more to the military than "serving your country". That is a big part of it true. But there is a big sense of being apart of something bigger than yourself, of being apart of historic events.
I know you may not understand that, but there is something deeply satisfying about it. It's a Brotherhood, and there are so many people who just want to be apart of something.
My advice would be do a job any job, just get enough money to buy a plane ticket to anywhere where there is growing economy. Widen your horizons and stay peaceful.
A photography degree?????? i wouldnt pay for it either. unless he is going to be an engineer or lawyer, accountant, doctor.....then i will HELP HIM(IF I WAS THE PARENT).
Where there's a will there's a way. This kid just didn't seem to have the will to get himself a job. Research where jobs are most plentiful on the Internet and go there. He just seemed lazy and wanted something handed to him. He sounded like he wanted a cushy job or his art school. I've met a lot of art school student who seemed to be spending mom and dad's money just to avoid getting a real job for another four years.

Sarahon06 2 months ago
a living wage here in the U.S. in my state is about $16000 USD before taxes.

I'd say that makin' crap up to support your point wasn't UPB.
ariuszarim 6 months ago
How do DIs get their jobs? The decide their sick of their current job, fill out a form and switch. There is absolutely no screening process for any basic training instructors. Stef keeps talking about DIs like these aren't govt employees. They just show up to collect a check.
ariuszarim 6 months ago
So, Stef is arguing that Drill Instructors, government employees, are super proficient at their jobs? That's bad form. They show up for the paycheck. Heck, my wife is a TI in the Air Force. I assure you, she is no master of reading people. I hate to say it, but Stef is just fear mongering at this point. Trying to scare the kid, by talking up DIs. Bring the real argument, don't try to scare people.
ariuszarim 6 months ago
I think that Stef thinks basic training is Full Metal Jacket. It isn't. Is there some insanity, yes. Are the DIs some kind of mind-reading monsters, no. All you need to do to get through is run, fold, and march. Any idiot can get through basic training. All that Officer and a Gentleman crap is propaganda.
ariuszarim 6 months ago
I don't think Stef has ever been, nor knows anyone in, the military. It really isn't this breeding ground of monsters he describes. I did 6 years, it really isn't that bad. Yes, there's an insane amount of manual labor. Yes, you work around 70 hours a week. But really, it pays so much more than a regular job. There's food, healthcare, shelter, and security beyond imagining. You think everyone fights, really? I went 6 years, fired a gun 4 times, never at a person. It's not that bad.
ariuszarim 6 months ago
I hate to be the voice of dissent, but the military ain't that bad. I don't know about Setf's "Grapes of Wrath" argument. There may not be any jobs that pay a living wage. I had the exact same problem in 2003, I moved to Cali. I got a job at a Target, it was the only source of employment within 150 miles. The job didn't pay enough for me to make rent. FYI, in 2003 I had spent 3 years in college. There are no jobs. There haven't been any jobs. $25k as a waiter? Try $12k.
ariuszarim 6 months ago

CaptainAmerica322 10 months ago
@cougfan755 The kid called in knowing Stefan's view that the military was not a good experience. He was looking for alternatives to joining the military. It would be morally irresponsible for Stefan to say the military can be a healthy experience, when he does not believe it can be.

I was on board with this man up until about 20:00. Most people after joining the military come back as better people. An example would be my brother who was a drug user and he came back clean and started a family. The people he met in his training are now his best friends. They often do things to help their community such as speaking to students or working with charities.
The way you speak you make it seem as if everyone in the military is a sociopath who is evil.
tyanth 1 year ago
@tyanth That is mostly true during peace time. But it's different during war time. Most soldiers don't get out as better people. More than half of them leave service with mental illness and substance abuse problems.

My brother joined the military last year but the difference is that he did have options. His education was being paid for.He wanted "life experience."Afghanistan has changed him.

The definition of a government, economic systems and the red herring accusation.

stefbot 3 years ago
Go right ahead.
By the way, do you happen to know which government is "I'm"?
SAsgarters 3 years ago
No, what I'm basically saying, is that most examples of a government's incompetence are actually examples of the people's ignorance.
I bet I have to point out that I said "most" and not "all", or you'll intentionally misunderstand that part, too.
Frankly, if you want a society to be run as efficiently and competently as possible, you should probably be considering some form of meritocracy.
SAsgarters 3 years ago
But from my perspective, that would be a prime example of something that a government would be far more efficient at.
By the way, how did you determine that the roads that were paved had nothing wrong with them? Visually, or did some expert tell you? Much of what governments do, can appear idiotic to people on the outside, but they may nevertheless be well thought out. Maybe one road was a high priority and the other wasn't. Maybe the one that got repaved was in greater need of it.
SAsgarters 3 years ago
Oh I agree that governments are inefficient and incompetent, but how do you figure that a people without a government would be more efficient and more competent?
SAsgarters 3 years ago
What exactly could the people do well without a government?
SAsgarters 3 years ago
Ok, you do realize without a government there would be people killing people, robbing each other and the list goes on. I don't trust people enough to run the world by themselves. I rather be in this Capitalist system. I really like it but MUCH better than not system at all.

I feel I have lost track of my goals and life, and dont know what do with myself now that im stuck in the army. Believe me the army changes you.

PS: In Norway you "only" get drafted for a year.

yea, if your government doesn't force you to...

I don't disagree, but the best guitar teacher I ever had served in the army 5+ years. James Keenan (lead singer of Tool, A Perfect Circle) served in the army as well. I'm sure the list goes on. It prolly just depends on the person. Just throwing that out there.
anakin005 3 years ago
I wonder if The Edge gives guitar lessons... Imagine where James might be without the Army.

I hope this is not too off topic, considering the beheadings of NATO soldiers going on in the war zones.

here is the full story watch?v=L5lGvjXXblA

I had no idea what to do.

everything you said was completely logical and i hope that guy didnt sign away his life, what happened?
atlone22 3 years ago 3
Man, how do you do it, stef?
Shezmu 3 years ago 2
Well I wouldn't say that I'm that busy, here or when I was overseas. Let's just there are certain jobs you can sign up for which will include lots of time monitoring equipment and you have internet access, so you can do schoolwork. Still If I had it all over to do again I wouldn't have joined, I'd have found some way to pay for school. Besides you never know, you could become an anarcho-capitalist while in the army, and your screwed.

I was in JROTC for four years and almost made the same mistake that kid did. I'm lucky I found you when I did Stef.
Thanks

Seriously, i know people are not too fond about the war, but your title is very disrespectful towards those who served.
Yes, i know there are many sad stories like the man you interviewed, but still... you need to learn to have discretion and some empathy.
mopuffy01 3 years ago
Actually, I am most concerned about the lives of the Iraqis... It is those poor people I have the most empathy for.
stefbot 3 years ago
Mopuffy01: There was no disrespect shown to those who "served." Stef's title was on point. He offered advice to a young person on "how to stay out of the army. This young man also expressed that he did not want to go but felt that he had to. He felt backed into a corner and Stef merely pointed out that there are other options for those who enlist as a "last resort."
Sarahon06 3 years ago
I do not have any respect for the people who are serving as I think murdering is bad. I shouldn't speak for Stef, but I think he feels similarly.
ithinkronpaulissmart 3 years ago 2
You mean 'support our troops' nonsense? Why not stem the flow of suffering at its source, stand outside a recruitment center and talk to the young easily influenced men who think they are 'serving their country' by going over to foreign lands and killing and subjugating its inhabitants.
Gromitdog1 2 years ago
i would not be stopped by someone who yelled at me outside a recruitment center. also we are not going to be passive while they the terrorists fly planes into my structures and threaten to kill me. hell yeah ill blow their head off! WAKE UP, TIME TO DIE!

sbyrne411 2 years ago
There is a lot more to the military than "serving your country". That is a big part of it true. But there is a big sense of being apart of something bigger than yourself, of being apart of historic events.
I know you may not understand that, but there is something deeply satisfying about it. It's a Brotherhood, and there are so many people who just want to be apart of something.
That's why there are so many Gangs.

My advice would be do a job any job, just get enough money to buy a plane ticket to anywhere where there is growing economy. Widen your horizons and stay peaceful.
Thanks Stefan you are most wise.
Good luck to the lad.

Working in Alaskan oil fields can be as brutal as the army if not worse, where most workers are high on cocaine, heroine, etc
