'...and pray to all space that you may never meet me in my thousand other forms. Farewell, Randolph Carter, and beware; for I am Nyarlathotep, the Crawling Chaos.'
That scares the crap out of me. And, damn it, I want that as the last line in an episode in the future.
But with Randolph Carter replaced by Doctor, obviously.
Here's an idea! Nyarlathotep decides to wake up Azathoth to end the universe. The Doctor gets wind of this, but not realizing what either of these things are, goes to try and stop it. Cue the Doctor having to either break his code on not tampering with time and the letting the universe die a cold death or stop the meaningless destruction of all that is, including himself and all he holds dear. Plus some awesome scenes with Nyarlathotep in various hideous forms.
@binarynightmare Definitely not a bad idea, but given that beings similar to The Elder Ones have been mentioned and Lovecraftian abominations have made appearances throughout the forty year lifespan of the franchise, I'm sure the Doctor would have heard of these infamous entities who seem to be popular with every wannabe occult cult known to the universe.
But were there any actual references to Lovecraft in Doctor Who? I really admire the DW Mythos, it's really original and has a lot of great monsters, like The Face of Boe. I'm just wondering if there were any straight-up references to the Cthulhu Mythos? I'd love to see something like that, it just seems right for a series about time travel and alien creatures for something like the Mythos to pop up once or twice to cause the Doctor some unspeakable horror.
@binarynightmare And also, sir. Unless it's Halloween, or I'm at an anime convention, a costume party, a gay bar, or a gay pride parade, then it's madame.
He just looks so funny there. I expect a little speech bubble to pop up saying 'HAI GAIZ!!! WHAT YA DOIN'!!!?' but then the Master (that's him, right?) turns around, chases him and the Benny Hill music starts.
@binarynightmare Well... when you stop to think about it, isn't it the charm of Lovecraft horrors that you don't actually... "see them?" They're just alluded to, hiding in the background, in the shadows, stalking you...?
True! And it's that awful moment when you do see them, like Johansson in The Call - just a short glimpse - that you know you are nothing and it sends you insane knowing such a thing could exist in a universe where you thought there was order but there is only madness and oblivion!
I'm wondering how The Doctor would cope with insanity.
@binarynightmare Remember "Midnight?" That episode where the Doctor was onboard a shuttle with a group of strangers, and they were all being stalked by some unseen terror that boasted it was as old as time? Yeah, that's pretty much how a typical Lovecraft story would go if the Doctor was the protagonist.
But again, the Doctor has also faced other Lovecraftian abominations. He even took down Satan, that has to count for something.
Oh yes! I loved that episode. It goes to show that when it really wants to, DW can be incredibly atmospheric.
Same with the Impossible Planet/Satan Pit episodes - I think they were brilliant and broke new barriers for that franchise.
I don't want a full-on battle with Nyarlathotep, just an episode that shows that even though The Doctor is powerful, there are somethings not even a being such as he can comprehend. Something to put him in his place, as it were.
Oh my godness. This music takes my breath away, it makes me cry. I couldn't hold it together for the 10th doctor last moments with this music and his " I don't wanna go". The tenth doctor was epic, just like this piece of music, he regenerated to such beauty. I miss the tenth doctor, my doctor :/ not that i have anything against matt i just think David Tennant had such power and emotion, he was everything the doctor should be and was. Matt smith does not compare. The 10th doctor forever <3
Oh Gods of Doctor Who, hear my prayer. Ensure that Ten is brought back for an awesome crossover special in which all the Doctors of the revival series band together for an amazing adventure. Nine, Ten and Eleven, together... please.
Gods of Doctor Who, hearken to me! Let thine scribes and producers aquire the rights to the Cthulhu Mythos, for no greater foe could there be for The Doctor than the Outer God, Nyarlathotep, thousand-formed messenger, the Crawling Chaos!
@binarynightmare No, not the ACTUAL thing... just an approximation. Mile-high sea monster called Kroll... it's the fifth episode (or possibly the fourth, I can never keep the order straight) of the Key to Time sequence (AKA Season 16). Also known as The Episode That Nobody Cared About or alternately The Episode In Which Everything But Romana Sucked.
Ah, right. I really think the current writer (can't remember the name) needs to include just one genuine Lovecraftian horror for the books - an Elder Thing, Yithian, hell even a Shoggoth or Mi-Go would. I'd love to see the Doctor tackle Dreamland. That'd be a trip worth remembering! The Doctor on Mt. Ngranek fighting off Night-Gaunts...
DW has such potential in that area. The best recent DW episode, in my opinion, was the two-parter 'The Impossible Paknet' and 'The Satan Pit'. The Doctor vs. Satan. That's hardcore! But seeing as Nyarlathotep is basically the Devil times 9000, it'd be scarier becuase he's completely indifferent. He'll screw with you just for the lulz. Plus, he's got Azathoth on his side. Wake him and the universe gets eaten - and there's nothing nobody could do.
@binarynightmare Awesome as that is, wouldn't you say The Master fits Nyarlathotep's role rather nicely? They're both cunning, sadistic manipulators. Of course, if you were to write it, you'd have to ensure that Nyarlathotep comes off as a completely distinct and unique character as oppose to a Master substitute.
Not really. The Master is sentient creature of this universe, a Time Lord. Nyarlathotep is a thing from beyond this dimension's sphere comprehensibility. He is a thousand formed thing who is indifferent, amoral and for lack of a batter word, omnioptent. You can't kill Nyarlathotep, only banish him, and that's really only The Hanter of the Dark shape.
If the Master were to come up against Nyarlathotep, one whisper from the shadowed maw of the Crawling Chaos would burn him to dust.
that bit at the end where it kicks into a new version of the Doctor's theme is just awsome. Smith's finale was brilliant but I still say Tennant's bow out was just the biggest most epic Doctor Who episode of 2010
@drk4tlf It was a proper Tv EVENT wasn't it something u just know will b talked about in yrs to come and not just in Dr Who circles. There r 8 yr old now who will say that as adults that was 1 of the most memorable moments of TV, if not their childhood period. The Caves of Androzani r regarded highly as a DW story + rightly so but as a REGENERATION story the End of Time might just b the best
God this had me crying my Eyes out , just before we actually started to see the Tenth Doctor begin his Regeneration , i just broke down in Tears , which proves that Murry can create very effect Music , but while hearing it during the Regeneration , reminded me of just how much we are all going to miss the Tenth Doctor , and David not being on the Series anymore . . . . unless he does a kind of Time Crash with Matt Smith . . . . FINGERS CROSSED ! .
@doctorwhoone agreed that's what happened to me too at every end of series (almost every) i started to cry Murray Gold sure does great music that make you burst into tears! so epic.
@doctorwhoone I agree. I also cried when the Doctor started his regeneration. Specifically: "I don't want to go." ;( Even more sad when you think about it: Tennant went into acting because of Doctor Who and always wanted to play the part. It was his life's dream... And it was dying along with the 10th Doctor. I'd love to see a "Time Crash" special with Matt and David. It'd be awesome.
@doctorwhoone In my opinion, Ten had the most epic and heartbreaking regeneration ever... especially since it was one of those times when he regenerated all alone. And unlike the other times that happened (Two to Three, Seven to Eight), he was fully awake, fully aware, and I even think he was afraid and desperately trying to fight his regeneration. When the energy from his regeneration devastated the TARDIS, I almost thought it was like the ship was mourning her master's transformation, too.
@doctorwhoone I'm hoping he will, because the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who is in 2013, and it's actually a saturday. So he's gonna be asked back, but it's whether or not he'll do it.
Sorry but I'm not going to like because the seen where we lose David :( so sorry I am going to dislike
