You could use a simple paper punch to create a half round end on the straw to fit better around the nozzle, just punch a half circle whic gives you a U shape end of the straw
Only for the base-coat, and only if the model doesn't have a lot of intricate detail, like an aircraft carrier (relatively flat) or an airplane. Spray-paint tends to glob up on small details like antenna farms and rivets, so try to keep it light and even. Personally, I'd use my airbrush for all painting applications.
