@MoPar7055 around this time Karpov was at the top of his career with a FIDE that I believe was approaching 2800 (although I don't think he ever crossed the 2800 mark.
I'll be very disappointed, KC, if you ever create a video in which something doesn't fall like a pack of cards. These are truly devastating situations, in which whole packs of cards start falling before anyone can even make houses out of them.
at 4.02, why not rook takes D2, white pawn takes queen to get another queen, white bishop to C6. Seems like a even position and white also get a temp with bishop c6..
@ttylga I couldn't pick amoung Kasparov, Karpov, or Fischer. If anyone I would pick Fischer, not because he's an American but because he and Spassky were the computers before there were computers.
he says that white would b dominating in this variation but white has only 1 rook and bishop against 2 rooks witch in my opinion black would have a better movement advantage in taking pawns and wining 06:41
Karpov is very great.I have a lot of chess books by such hrandmasters as Pancenko and Sveshnikov and many times did I read them stating Karpov having outstanding abilities.I do wander what Karpov was in the beginning of the 70-ies if being an old man,he devastates a much younger World Championship pretendent Topalov by such a wanderful way.
Wow, I've never seen Karpov play like this! Perfect line about it looking like Kasparov or Fischer playing the white pieces but it's Karpov. And with such a formidable foe as Topalov -- well, it reminds me of the Roger Ebert line: "Each film is only as good as its villain." Good stuff. Thanks.
really sick game

Great analysis! I was actually researching on Karpov's Rxe6! sacrifice and then I stumbled upon this video. Topalov was smashed in this game.

Has anyone noticed that Topalov always seems to be on the receiving end of great games

wouldn't disagree with that. kasparov vs. fischer in a world chess championship format would be amazing. both are so stubborn.

poor topalov, I think karpov could have saced his queen and anyway would have wined the game,
the advantage is definitively not on the board but on the brain.

Sad that Karpov v. Fischer never happened.

@maxmoon2009 No way Kasparov vs. Fischer would've been even more amazing! Both very aggressive players!

At 7:40 in the video
White has a check forking both rooks (move 35. Qc5+ in game)
but cant black play Rd6?
I understand white could threaten 36. Bh5! with 37. Ne4 but atleast Black remains a bit better than dropping the a-file rook
protangist 3 years ago
36.Ne4 immediately also wins back one exchange and white is still five pawns to the good.
In the game, black didn't "drop" the a-file rook, but rather exchanged it for the knight. Same thing, generally, happens with the suggested 35..Rd6.

An extremely important lesson from Karpov!
Reminded me of Capablanca, who was relentless too.

this and fischer v Bryne are my favourite games. even a computer couldn't have defeated karpov that day. he we truly immortal for that one game.
