Best thing about Eddie is he has no idea what he's doing when he's doing it, other than what key he's playing it in. and that's questionable at times. Too many guitarist are hung up on theory and what others are doing, which is why so many sound the same. Not Eddie. He doesnt care about theory nor what anyone else is doing. Ive took on that approach in 1990 and came up with the best stuff I ever did after I did so. Wanna get great and unique? stop listening to everyone else.
@believer06 yeah stranger same here dont listin too a text book yip yap your a guitarist if the genius comes to you.if it sounds good its good end of story
So many of Ed's "tricks", etc. are his and his alone: anyone else doing them automatically makes one think of ... Edward. Very rare quality in a musician. He has his own thing and no one will quite replicate it, as it should be. Or rather, how it always OUGHT to be (ha, ha).
The man is quite simply one of rock's greatest virtuosos and arguably its most impacting guitarist. There are faster (much) and more technical (very) but there is only ONE Edward Van Halen.
trying to reply to the comment that says he used many of the same riffs and progression throughout his career....personally i'd love to see you demonstrate this on a vid of your own, i think it could be really cool
@Aoleon 5150 studios was built in 1983 and the first album recorded there was 1984. And they took the name from the studio for the 5150 album later on. 5150 is the police code for the criminaly insane.
@TNMinuteMan Actually the album recorded there before Sammy joined was "Fair Warning".
They recorded 1984 at Warner Brothers studio. under contract to do so. Fair Warnings was all Ed's doing including producing. The best album ever made by him besides the very first they did.
DLR pushed cover tunes on albums as fillers, Diver down had the most on it.
@JBL8863 Fair Warning was recorded in March of 1981 at Sunset Studios. Ed was coming in late at night and laying down his guitar tracks so that Dave couldn't edit anything. 5150 studios wasnt built until 1983 and 1984 WAS the first album made there and the only reason I know that is because Ed has stated that several times in interviews.
@TNMinuteMan I have every EVH CD ever made just open up and read for yourself...they do include where they were recorded other than Fair Warnings was all Ed's work that was the cost him the least amount to make.
There are more than enough clips here to hear hm say where and why he recorded it at his house.
DLR was wacked out then and still is now and always wanted to control what was going to be on a CD...Fair Warning was all Ed's and Alex doing. DLR came after to lay down lyrical tracks.
@JBL8863 Dude 5150 wasnt built until 1983, Fair Warning came out in 1981. Now it may have been remasterd at 5150 years later, but that album was recorded at Sunset Studios with Ed laying down a great deal of his tracks at 4 in the morning with his engineer Donn Landee.
@TNMinuteMan You are quite right, I just watched the the latest Ed interview with CNN where he states that... '1984 was the first album recorded at 5150... and every one since'. quote :)
@TNMinuteMan Plus you can hear the difference on 1984 when Ed finally had a studio of his own. People say Fair warning has the best solo's...I think 1984 does. He had time with his own studio to craft some real gems like girl gone bad, top jimmy, hot for teacher, house of pain (revisited). Would love to hear the original of this recording at high definition like the albums.
@JBL8863 Check out 5150 Studios at Wikipedia. com. It specifically says, and I quote "Every Van Halen album from 1984 onwards was recorded at 5150". Fair Warning was recorded at Sunset Sound.
@JBL8863 Look up Eddie Van Halen CNN. Ed says it himself.
1984 was the first record recorded there and every record since. It is actually zoned as a Racketball court.
I've been up to 5150 before. The SSL 9k in the control room is so big, you have to slide sideways to get into the first live room. which isn't very big at all.
the two quick runs at 13:46 are face-melting f*king insane....and there's an inspirational touch of that ascending pedal-tone riff of the verse in "Can't Get This Stuff No More" around 5:40-5:50
@t4v1nh0 Listen carefully to the outro riff in "Jump" off 1984. It's the opening riff of Top of the World from For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge in 1991. If you really want to get into the weeds on his music writing you'll find the same chord forms and progressions all over his music spanning his entire career.
For Van Halen fan guitar players (and probably others) this is a treat. EVH is experimenting with different sounds with just his guitar in "his space". If you listen to this through monitoring speakers as I am you can hear all the distinct differences in the effects and how they sound in the audio spectrum. He's experimenting. "Musicians" understand.
Now that I have listen to all of this. It's practice/ rehearsals and putting solos together for album and the 1984 tour it's simple amazing hereing the master at work!
To the fucking morons that don't get it he's praticeing. And putting a solo together if you play guitar on a professional level you would have known this
its not noise u moron its the creation which makes u a better guitar player,i believe nothing sounds right its how u and the band make it right u moron.scrap and mistakes are the greatest sounds u find in the greatest rock guitarist,u u u u u u u moron.
This SO cheers me up! Cant the guy play a bum note once in a while? he plays so CLEAN and musically like a percussive violinist, yet his tone seems so revved up and thick. And why does he have so many guitars?
I listened to the whole thing: i wish i could tour 5150 & see Eddie just playing.
@LottsaLasagna Oh, I'm sorry. You must be confused. You see, that's why I made that comment, because actually you couldn't be more wrong. If you had any clue of how a guitar player practices or what an electric guitar sounds like by itself, then you can understand what I am talking about. This is a raw, analog tape recording without all the studio editing. It's the absolute purist form of recording at the time. It's an inside look at one of the greats, but you obviously can't understand. Thanks!
@hotrodchevy5117 I don't think you're getting what I'm saying. My comment is not negative. It's all noise until you get get others to make different noise and maybe you might get a song from it. If you have the right producer.
It all starts from well I can make this noise. What can you contribute.
@dvlORangl It's part of House of Pain off 1984. Most of the riffs you here on this video were rehearsals for 1984 either at the end of the Diver Down Tour or the start of the recording of 1984. Thanks for the comment! :)
