Horse slaughter feeds many starving countries! It keeps the horse population down and many from STARVING to death? Would you rather them die a slower death than slaughter? At least some food comes from this than illegally burying them and having it run into our water supply! Euthanization is bad for the environment!

I am a Rancher in Colorado. Thanks to Bo Dereck and her efforts by getting legislation passed to prevent the consumption of horse flesh. Horses are now going for about $100.00 at the auctions They are a liability to own and are starving because people can't get rid of them when they can't afford to feed them anymore. Their misguided and best of intentions have relegated the horse to becoming the least valuable of all domestic animals.
These once prized and pampered animals are now worthless.

It's not peoples faults sometimes you know. People have overbred horses and now that the economy is down nobody can afford to take care of their horses. I do believe if I was a horse I'd rather be slaughtered than starve to death, or not be able to walk because my hooves are in such bad shape. If people would study horse behavior they could find a way to make slaughter more kind. Their are kind slaughter facilities for cows. Yes humans are terrible I dont disagree. But dont blame all humans.
If everyone who watched this video sent $10 to a horse rescue, that $817,000 would save a lot of horses and help care for those that have already been saved. I volunteer with two rescues and I've seen how cruel humans can be. If you really care, send a few bucks. Or offer your time to help if there's a rescue nearby. Write your Congress people and tell them to pass the Horse Protection Act that has been waiting on Capitol Hill for 3 years while hundreds of thousands of horses are slaughtered.

A horse is no more special or unique than a cow or any other animal. Just because you see it as more majestic and beautiful does not mean it is. Your are showing undeserved favoritism.
Slaughtering a horse is nothing like slaughtering a cow, or another animal. For one it's humane, two horses have been knows as man's greatest companion, I don't think the ranges of a cows loyalty stretches as far as a horses. I personally don't eat cow meat. I don't eat steak, I'll eat chicken and fish and that is as a source of protein.
I'm sorry if i'm going to sound rude, but it was wrong for the slaughter houses to be closed down in Usa. I'm not a fan of it, i personally rescued a horse from slaughter and I still own him to this day, but the horses were being humanley killed here. Now that they are all closed, horses are being crammend into trailers and are being shipped to Mexico for inhumane slaughter. look at the big picture people, would we rather have horses go through a horrible long death, or die painlessley for food?

Most people dont like slaughter(for horses and any other animal) because of the way they are slaughtered and how they are treated.If slaughter didnt exist,there would be millions and millions of animals out there that will more than likely never have a home because people like backyard breeders and people who breed their pets just for fun create more animals than there are homes for.I am for slaughter but only if the death is instant, and the animals dont suffer at anytime in their lives.

thats not it at all. There are humane ways of putting the horses out of their misery - not slaughter. How would you like it if your leg was broken and then someone starved you, beat you, shot you int he head, slit your throat and then hung you up by your leg while you were still concious? Slaughter houses kill their horses pretty much straight away, its a waste of money to keep hold of them so it would have to have been past owners that 'starved and beat' the horses. But yes a bullet through the head would be a nice way to die- very quick. My horses will all be shot and taken by the hunt when the time comes. How can they be still concious when they have just been shot in the head? Lol, they are dead then, they slit their throats to spill the blood.
I mean in the trailers... they don't get food or fresh water for days. The guns they use to stun the horses are made for cattle - not horses. about 2,500 horses are still concious after being shot
Oh i agree, live transportation is very wrong, hense why banning slaughter houses in America/Uk is a terrible idea as it just means horses are forced to travel even further to countries with less regulation. And 2,500 is a very small amount really, that must be like 1%. Im sure 1% of other forms of putting horses down have problems too, accidentally hitting the wrong area with a shotgun or a horse fighting euthenasia(sp?) which both do happen, there will always be a small percentage.

this is not actually true... many animals are left to suffer for long hours before dying. many sheep are transported on cramped, hot ships for weeks to their slaughter. Pigs become hysterical before they are killed. cows try desperatly to jump out of the pens and chickens are often plucked before the are even fully dead... go vegan or at least vegetarian x x

I have not eaten commercially raised meat in 13 years and counting. I agree the CAFO (concentrated animal feeding operations) are disgusting and the animals living in it unhealthy. I've raised my own on cert. organic feeds and butchered them on-site. When I do buy, I buy cert. organic grass fed, ie. the way they have been living for millenium. And I do not meat out unless the restruant provides the same.
I'm vegetarian but my friend eats biological meat. I wish that everyone should think like you; much better for animals. Again I'm not against eating meat. There are so few commercials on biological meat due to economic profits by giant-industries. I own animalshelter with some bio-industry raised animals. Please not that it is not "THE Europeans" who eat horses... I am European and I would rather eat my own toes than horse meet 'cause I adore them since I could say "Pferd". I am German, I hate Germans (mostly southern) eating horses but it is not very common in Germany.

I never said you should a perfectly good healthy horse. But horses do get seriously sick or injured, then it's better to put them down than to let them suffer.

well that is how the equine industry works, if you like or not. I'm just saying how it is. And lots of these people incl. me love horses, and will do everything for them. But sometimes there are old horses who has been bought and sold so many times and no one wants them, and unfortunately there's not many places for horses like that, so they are put down. That is how the world function. Just to make it clear I'm not interested in horses for breeding or sports but as a hobby.
ok i am in the equestrian industry, and that is not how it works. people take wild horses, and perfectly fine horses to auctions and people from slaughter houses get them. but old horses are most of the time taken in as school horses or helping out with disabled children.

I'm in animals rescue, and yer right: Beautiful, healthy horses get sent to slaughterhouses on the ragulsr basis. Yeah, I seen Mustangs at auctions, fresh of the prairie, and nobody wants a "wild, dangerous animal." Once a Mustang was bleeding down it's face and nobody did a thing about it, even when I told them about it. Luckily, that killer-buyer was a few peenies shy to outbid me. >:D
I don't understand why they capture wild horses just to sell them for slaughter. That is just stupid. Don't you have any laws against it? something that protect the horses? I know in Denmark we had problems with horses being send to Italy to be slaughter, they drove all the way packed in lorries with no ventilation, no stops and no water. But the government have but a stop to it.

I'm sorry if i'm going to sound rude, but it was wrong for the slaughter houses to be closed down in Usa. I'm not a fan of it, i personally rescued a horse from slaughter and I still own him to this day, but the horses were being humanley killed here. Now that they are all closed, horses are being crammend into trailers and are being shipped to Mexico for inhumane slaughter. look at the big picture people, would we rather have horses go through a horrible long death, or die painlessley for food?

Most people dont like slaughter(for horses and any other animal) because of the way they are slaughtered and how they are treated.If slaughter didnt exist,there would be millions and millions of animals out there that will more than likely never have a home because people like backyard breeders and people who breed their pets just for fun create more animals than there are homes for.I am for slaughter but only if the death is instant, and the animals dont suffer at anytime in their lives.

There are more horses in the world than good homes to take care of them, and that is the simple sad truth. Stopping slaughter dosn't give these animals a place to go.

thats not it at all. There are humane ways of putting the horses out of their misery - not slaughter. How would you like it if your leg was broken and then someone starved you, beat you, shot you int he head, slit your throat and then hung you up by your leg while you were still concious? There are humane ways of doing things. Slaughter is not the only option.

Starve and beat me? Slaughter houses kill their horses pretty much straight away, its a waste of money to keep hold of them so it would have to have been past owners that 'starved and beat' the horses. But yes a bullet through the head would be a nice way to die- very quick. My horses will all be shot and taken by the hunt when the time comes. How can they be still concious when they have just been shot in the head? Lol, they are dead then, they slit their throats to spill the blood.

Oh i agree, live transportation is very wrong, hense why banning slaughter houses in America/Uk is a terrible idea as it just means horses are forced to travel even further to countries with less regulation. And 2,500 is a very small amount really, that must be like 1%. Im sure 1% of other forms of putting horses down have problems too, accidentally hitting the wrong area with a shotgun or a horse fighting euthenasia(sp?) which both do happen, there will always be a small percentage.

this is not actually true... many animals are left to suffer for long hours before dying. many sheep are transported on cramped, hot ships for weeks to their slaughter. Pigs become hysterical before they are killed. cows try desperatly to jump out of the pens and chickens are often plucked before the are even fully dead... go vegan or at least vegetarian x x

If horses are in good flesh, why waste it and render it useless with euthanasia? There is absolutely nothing dishonorable about being used for food. They are hungry people and animals out there, it is obnoxious for those who have plenty to condemn their being used as food. There are unwanted animals for many reasons, if they are in good flesh, put it to good use. I have not eaten commercially raised meat in 13 years and counting. I agree the CAFO (concentrated animal feeding operations) are disgusting and the animals living in it unhealthy. I've raised my own on cert. organic feeds and butchered them on-site. When I do buy, I buy cert. organic grass fed, ie. the way they have been living for millenium. And I do not meat out unless the restruant provides the same.

well that is how the equine industry works, if you like or not. I'm just saying how it is. And lots of these people incl. me love horses, and will do everything for them. But sometimes there are old horses who has been bought and sold so many times and no one wants them, and unfortunately there's not many places for horses like that, so they are put down. That is how the world function. Just to make it clear I'm not interested in horses for breeding or sports but as a hobby.

ok i am in the equestrian industry, and that is not how it works. people take wild horses, and perfectly fine horses to auctions and people from slaughter houses get them. but old horses are most of the time taken in as school horses or helping out with disabled children.

yeah thats because in Europe, they eat horses. not in the U.S

so you believe that out of 300 million people no ones eating horse? isn't that a bit naive? Maybe it's not normal to eat horse in US, but surely doesn't mean no ones eating horse. And it really depends where you're from in Europe if they eat horse or not, in Denmark it's not normal to eat horse, but it's quite normal in Italy.

no i dont believe out of 300 million people no one is eating horse. i know that there are probably not as many people eating horse in the u.s then there are in places in europe but people shouldnt eat a horse that was perfectly capable of so many things. its breaks my heart to see something like that to happen.

I'm in animals rescue, and yer right: Beautiful, healthy horses get sent to slaughterhouses on the ragulsr basis. Yeah, I seen Mustangs at auctions, fresh of the prairie, and nobody wants a "wild, dangerous animal." Once a Mustang was bleeding down it's face and nobody did a thing about it, even when I told them about it. Luckily, that killer-buyer was a few peenies shy to outbid me. >:D

I don't understand why they capture wild horses just to sell them for slaughter. That is just stupid. Don't you have any laws against it? something that protect the horses? I know in Denmark we had problems with horses being send to Italy to be slaughter, they drove all the way packed in lorries with no ventilation, no stops and no water. But the government have but a stop to it.

They don't catch them just for slaughter, but some to get sent to meat packers, and I hate it.
