I left The Brow Primary School just a month after it was burnt down - but I promise it wasn't me! To be fair, although it must have been very hard on the pupils at the time, the yobs who burned it down probably did 'em all a favour. That building was an absolute wreck and the new one, which I worked in at one point, is beautiful! All turns out right in the end!
I cant believe ive just seen this! my mum lives in Runcorn and the rest of her row of houses burned down today, i was doing a search for the sick man who filmed 3 families having their homes and lives destroyed because i want to see if my mothers house is ok, instead i find this memorable footage of the day my school burned down!! It was my mum who fought the mp's and other penny pinching idiots to get it rebuilt as it stands today! (totally irrelevant but Gordon Burns is a F**KIN LEGEND!!!)
Its a shame that ITV is now a national channel rather than the regions it used to have when I grew up. You certainly wouldn't get the announcements that reach the heart of the community like this anymore.
I miss watching the old granada TV, TV was a lot better before Sky Digital came in I believe. Sure, there were less channels, but there were also less repeats. All I watch now is Eastenders and Sky Sports News and thats it.... Shame really :(
It was an unfortunate, but unavoidable, juxtaposition - it shouldn't obscure the now mind-blowing concept of a regional ITV franchise delivering a community info message in peak!
Agreed, lol. Granada's continuity announcer probably threw up their arms that day when "London's Burning" appeared and declared "I can't win!". The Granada ident + music helped soften the blow a little, but sometimes you just can't help bad irony. :-)
that was funny putting london's burning on after a fire anouncement! well, i guess if there nothing on apart from Channel 4's nuns on the run, i suppose you could stand to watch it.
How's that for tact, eh Granada? You announce that a school has been razed to the ground and then you launch into an episode of London's Burning, with the opening titles showing a building on fire. A bit insensitive? No, not at all!! Who says ITV has no feelings?! Mike S.
In defence of Granada, it was a bit more unfortunate that London's Burning was about to be broadcast and I suppose the news of this fire had only just come in, so they had to tone down the announcement into said programme. Notice Jim Pope only says ''This is Granada''.
Agree. And there was no way that Granada would suddenly pull a networked high rating show out of the evening schedule and fill it with a regional film / repeat at such short notice.
Urgent message about the school being burnt down followed by London's Burning.
Pathetic, isn't it?

You just hear the sound of hundreds of kids living in the Runcorn area cheering and saying to themselves, 'Yeah, no school tomorrow!!!'
Great continuity..
Now on ITV, 'Runcorn's Burining.'

Wonder if that message would be broadcast on 'ITV1' today?
Another reason to force ITV to bring back its regional identity!

'on channel four now, nuns on the run.'
Whats that supposed to mean?
jjjjjjjjw 3 years ago
Er.. showing at that time on Channel 4 was the movie "Nuns On The Run". That's how I'd interpret that one...

ok! now is "on channel four now, nuns on the run. this is granada." got it.

This is from the 11th December 1994. The episode of London's Burning is from Series 7, Episode 14.

You can just taste the delicious irony in this! We can only wonder what Jim Pope was thinking afterwards. Three words: OH. MY. GOD. Mike S.

It's probably why they didn't mention the program title neither. I quite like the music for this ident of Granada's. Though I was a Thames boy.
