  • There are clues that this was the beginning of the end. The vegetarian diet was because he was fighting cancer. The black shirt, and coat was what he wore on Tops his last TV appearance. The reference to his anger was about his feud with Lawler. This was either taped in December 1983 or January 1984.

  • hes not a genius....

  • @billysandals of course not--he only acts like one.

  • Can you buy this series anywhere?

  • i use to have this on dvd and i lost it!!!

most important thing ive ever lost!

  • epic troll

  • But, see, if the crayon is black just like the screen Andy's in, I think it's the same thing as if people didn't put anything on the tv at the first time...

  • I'm guessing that was the idea haha. Andy is a genius.

  • This is great. This reminds me alot of Uncle Floyd.

People were probably waiting for some of his standup but were probably perplexed as to why he was doing a children's like show.

  • HAHAHAHA

  • @whiskeyspray how?--the difference in age

  • what Jim Carrey?

  • i wish i could add something reasonable to this but i'm not going to

  • this is jim carrey right?

  • no...

  • On some show (was it this), he interviews Cindy Williams to hilarious effect. I would sure like to see that once again. Does any one remember that?

  • I wonder if this show influenced Tim and Eric at all...though they don't do it nearly as well.

  • what happens when andy steps on the line on the saran wrap?

  • The sh-sh-shoes 'n socks lounge in Tahoe... Ha Ha Ha what a classic!

  • "Those of u that didnt do it, you cant have the fun!" HAHAHAHHAAA!!!! oh i love Andy :( Such a sweetheart, and DID just want to have fun bless him.

    X

  • lol

  • tony clifton puppet is god

  • I wonder if this inspired vic reaves?

  • most definitely

  • oh god, he is a genius.

  • Comment removed

  • static electricity

  • genius! absolute genius!

  • If it's a black crayon, shouldn't he be standing on a white background?

  • either you're joking or you just don't understand him

  • I'm not sure what you're referring to exactly. My crayon comment?

And no offense to you (honestly), but I hate pompous-asses who act like THEY understand him and others don't.

Not even some of the people who knew him fully "got" him. Everyone has their own interpretation of him... and I don't believe any of us are wrong.

  • He is just messing with your mind. The crayon must be black to have you wondering why he did that. He never indented to make the steps visible...

He achieves his goal even after all these years!

  • lol True.

You really never knew with Andy. I just got done reading "Was This Man A Genius?" by Julie Hecht.... my brain was tired after.

  • I wish Andy was coming back...now, I'm gonna go cry, excuse me.

  • You're a fuckin' fraud. Someone who worked on the press conference told me that.

    Stop fuckin' slandering Andy Kaufman.

  • liar

  • ur a tit

  • i wish i could do on my computer screen....or can i?

  • So Paul is dead and Andy is alive?

    Nice exploitation, guy!

  • Ahhhh, so "seran wrap" (spelling?) is american for cling film. You learn something new everyday.

  • "saran wrap" is just a brand name "plastic wrap" is more generic...like you Brits say "Hoover" for vacuum cleaner...

  • lol, thanks - I've been waiting six months for someone to reply. Now I can get on with my life!

  • hmmm...just as well you weren't holding your breath....;>

  • What? You didn't get you magic screen and crayon, so you couldn't have any of the fun,

    billdiana.

  • HaHaHaHaHa!

  • he was the absolute best at pushing buttons, he was the puppet master.

  • LOL at the desk being 10 feet high. Carson (and later Letterman) had his desk and chair slightly higher than the guest's chairs, Kaufman was goofing on that

  • EVERYBODY IN THE KITCHEN! GET BACK! WERE READY TO START!

    I love him!

    Hes Such a genious.

Never know whether to take him serious or not.

I dont think even HE knew his true identity.

  • lmao hes seriously the funniest guy ever

  • I just did this on my computer screen with a pen, it went thou & ruined the screen, liquid stuff come out of the screen.

I did it on my friends computer thou when he was away.

  • the background is black, why would he ask the home audience to get a black marker?

  • My god, you're RIGHT? WHAT ON EARTHH?!?!?!?!?!?!

  • ya i know eh, my older brother tried this when this episode aired and it wasnt anything special

  • The point is that it doesn't make any difference. You would see the same thing no matter if you did it or not.

  • Now we all know where PEE WEE HERMAN stole his act from

  • He was ORIGINAL...and also NUTS!

  • oh god, he is a genius.

  • Is it just me or do you think Pee Wee Herman borrowed heavily from this?

  • Oh man... I love Andy Kaufman! I can see where Pee-Wee Herman got inspiration from this for sure. Genius!

  • andy was psychotic

  • only those of you that did it can have the fun LOL!

  • Classic!

  • Classic!

  • if i remember correctly, this actually never aired on tv. so it was a one time show, not for kids of course.

  • tony clifton is still cool as a puppet

  • even the greats miss sometimes

  • tony clifton is not as funny as puppet

  • then are u watching it?

  • True true true. He was 30 years ahead of Paris Hilton. But I don't think Andy would have been as pleasant in a "leaked" sex tape. (sudden wave of nausea).

  • I think he was being totally serious the whole time. But he was on a different frequency from most people so it does seem a bit odd. I think he's hilarious, just subtle.

  • The joke is you used a black crayon so you won't be able to see the stairs anyway. He made all those kids do all that for nothing

  • but was this show for kids?

if it was wouldn't there be kids in the audience too...? :-P

i think this show came out in the late night... for adults only...

  • dunno reminds me of mr.dressup no?

  • This was a kid's show wasn't it?

  • he was difficult to follow but that was the thing you had to make up your own mind about his way

  • I'm going to need a lot of saran wrap for my tv.

  • He had more balls than most comedic performers. It takes some serious walnuts to stick to such an abrasive routine without flinching or faltering.

  • you're abso fucking lutely RIGHT!

  • Actually, the great thing about Andy Kaufman was that there was never anything to "get." He wanted gut reactions -- be it laughter, confusion, discomfort, or glee. So whether you like Andy's stuff or hate it, it's totally fine -- but don't say that other people aren't getting it or conversely, are just "pretending to get it." Andy's stuff wasn't like that.

  • maybe not "funny" but surely entertaining....and that's ALWAYS better than boring....what do you "want" to be, prayfertrey, the one who REALLY "get's it"?.....

  • Again this is proof that Kaufman was ahead of his time. Tony Clifton was the Borat of his time just no one was ready for it. Also Kaufmann could have been a good kids tv show host now. Look at Blues Clues, his delivery is the best.

  • lol.. black crayon with black background

  • More please!

  • I liked him better in Ace Ventura.

  • you are an idiot, thats jim carrey dumbass

  • what an ass.

  • okay, im dumb but the screen was black...if people were using black crayons- they still wouldnt see anything. was that the joke?

  • "okay, im dumb but the screen was black...if people were using black crayons- they still wouldnt see anything. was that the joke?"

Well, yes, you are dumb. That is EXACTLY the joke.

  • i know :) *slaps head* thanks...

  • special. would've made a great kids' show.

  • This isn't a good example of his work, or maybe, it actually IS, and I'm being had... again.

  • I had forgotten lousy his whole shtick was. Man did he suck!

  • Lol I fucking love the height of the desk

  • Tony Clifton is like Fezzik! But what the hell is a "magic screen"?

  • The black crayon.. he loved to totally take the piss out of the audience! you have to love him, he was so clever

  • I love anti-humour, dadaist performance art and alternative comedy but I really just can't get into Andy Kaufman...He simply isn't entertaining for me! I feel like I'm really missing out on somethign special, but he honestly doesn't entertain or amuse me in anyway

  • Well, perhaps some people actually think this is funny, and you are "foolish". That`s always a possibility. And Lenny Bruce has to be heard in context of his time. He talked about things others didnt dare to

  • Usually when a person reaches that far they fall over.

  • I gave you a plus 1, people, no matter how hard you try to explain this VERY valid point to them, will never understand it, or will deny it. It's very true, in fact, it's gospel. Fact.

  • prayfertrey- abso-fuckin-lutely

  • R.I.P. Andy Kaufman, we will use our magic crayons in memory of you.

  • Any idea where to find a clip of Andy singing the yodeling song?

  • genious !

  • If Mr.Kaufman were here to see this, and of course he can't cause he is gone. I think he would say. "Get a life". As I am sure he would like to do if it were possible

  • That's pretty clever.

  • its amazing to think he had all those fans back then, that people got it. i think he is a genius but i can't imagine going to one of his shows

  • the crayon was black, the screen was black, amazing; he made those dipshits get thur saran rap for nothing hahahahahahahhahahha!

  • what's so funny?

  • he was the fucking man

  • The funniest part is if people left the saran wrap on the TV, then their crayon of the stairs would get in the way of watching the show. LOL!

  • Andy Kaufman was only Andy Kaufman. His comedy is unmatched. Bravo Andy, Bravo.

  • That was crap!

  • Damn that was awesome. I wounder how many had time to get the items and quickly do it. Wounder how it came off? Andy we miss ya! ...

  • yes it were funny!

  • "i gave up show business to wrestle women." lmao...no other being will ever have claim to that!

  • I want a Tony Clifton doll

  • that weren't funny

  • learn english.

  • learn irony

  • haha good come back

  • wouldn't this be like Pee Wee in the 70's?...

  • That isn't the start. Where did the beginning go?

  • Cause you can find it here on Youtube, that's why i cut it.

  • feel free to watch and comment my other clips from andy's show!

  • well done! most of the other kaufman clips here are much worser.

  • much woserer...

  • See, it's funny because he asks you to get a black crayon, and the background's black.

I'm bummed nobody's put up Clifton's Letterman appearance on YouTube. "I don't see it, you don't see it. He it, be it, me it."

  • exactly!! this is the greatest thing about andy. joking and pulling the watchers at home :)

  • sorry, this clip can't be shown very well, going to send the rest of this in another, smaller, piece :)
